^That was Michael Mayer who did Thoroughly Modern Millie, not Des McAnuff!

And I know JCS wasn't loved on this forum but I liked it.
But I thought Michael Mayer directed Millie? Did he take over from McAnuff?

Thanks for the early reviews. And I think Tale of Two Cities was exactly what I feared this would be.

Eric, I've never read the novel, but I've seen the film and while I find the pacing sluggish David Lean brings a stunning beauty to the proceedings that is missing here. The musical ran three hours so I don't know how many more details from the novel they could cram in there, but if the musical could refocus on the five leads rather than the soldiers/war story I think it would make for a more involving evening, and maybe that's where the novel's details could have come into play.
^Maybe John Doyle could re-imagine it in a few years or so in London like what he's doing with The Color Purple.

Mattbrain, Millie premiered at La Jolla Playhouse, which McAnuff ran for a long period of time. But Mayer directed it from the start.

Ah, ok!
Apparently there was an interruption in the show tonight. Anyone have any idea what it was?

A friend who went tonight said a woman in the 4th row started screaming hysterically and so they stopped the show and security had to come and pull her out, but they're not sure what caused the woman to scream like that

The show currently has alot of violence/violent images --- some very disturbing in my opinion. There are also a lot of gunshots and explosions. It was more than I wanted to see, and I could see where it could be upsetting to some. Obviously that would be a severe reaction regardless.

I would describe the show as pleasant. There are some solid songs in there, and the technical stuff is cool, but nothing really happens that catches fire. I didn't regret spending my money, but I wouldn't recommend it to a friend and I doubt I'll be seeing it again.
A show with the Russian Revolution as a backdrop that has gunshots?
Who would have thought. Look on the news each day and you will see a whole lot worse & that is real life. Realizing this is theater it is hard to believe someone would be shocked over this.

I liked it. It was a good afternoon of theater. Some really good songs. Visually stunning. Not sure why all the hate?

Because while okay most people think its not innovative. The music is also dull according to lots of people. I have not seen it

The music was fine, very lush with some real ear worm songs like "Now". I recognize that previews are dress rehearsals, and they change things as the audience responds. The audience on Saturday afternoon seemed to love it. My only complaint was the show was too long.
Again -- I have no idea why certain people on these Broadway message boards seemed predestined to hate it. Maybe it is a theater nerd thing or possibly just frustrated theater industry types with axes to grind. I wasn't looking for edgy or innovative (I go off-Broadway for that), but a good story and few good songs. The show I saw was exceeded my expectations and good IMHO.

Many on this board are predestined to hate shows like this or any show for that matter.
One can hope that the TDF seats we get are on the aisle. With a musical, we always look for the last song before the intermission. Having scoped out the location of the restrooms, I tap my wife when the intermission is near. As soon as the curtain drops, we are sprinting to the bathrooms like there is no tomorrow.
Someone asked previously what the merchandise was. Lately a number of shows do not show what they are selling besides magnets. Any info re merchandise would be appreciated.

What in the hell? I don't know how you even move on after that (that goes for both the performers and audience). I'm kind of discouraged at the idea that it's more about the war than the romance as those doorstop Russian novels have never been all that appealing to me. But again, I'm reserving judgment until 92Y.

I would not consider skipping this show just because a few people post that is isn't perfect. Go see it and decide for yourself. There are plenty of opportunities to get a heavily discounted ticket.
Some of my favorite times at the theater were for shows or performances that were trashed on this board. Everyone has their own taste and preferences. Don't let others dictate what yours may be.

I was already not interested in this show. But reading the comments on here reinforces my decision. Nobody makes my decision for me. For example, I loved Rocky saw it 2x when most others were hating on it. Also I live in Iowa and make only 3-4 Fri to Mon visits a year to NYC. Obviously I can't watch everything so it is enlightening to read these threads. I was already not interested in these shows in the first place and crossed them out for sure after reading their threads: Fun Home (couldn't figure out what it was about and what is so good about it after reading thru 5 pages of mostly gushing reviews), Finding Neverland (haven't even seen the movie) and now this. But I am excited for my May lineup (Something Rotten, Living on Love, Beautiful and On the Twentieth Century #2)

Not that it matters to this discussion, but Fun Home is about a young girl who grows up to be a lesbian cartoonist, and her memories of her family life led by a very disturbed father. (Not a spoiler since you're told all this in the first scene.)
