Interesting that of the three Gypsy women, Lesli Margherita is the one that got in here. Featured Actress feels like a really weak category so I still think Joy will get in based on the strength of the role but I’m much more uncertain now.
Just chiming in to remind everyone that the Drama Desk committee is made of only like seven people, and like the OCC awards has pretty much never been a good indicator for how the Tonys will shake out.

I totally agree. I'm sad Megan isn't being as recognized so far this awards season. Hopefully that changes tomorrow.

With fewer options for Tony nominatorsthis will probably not be the case tomorrow, but it probably does reflect the NY theatre community's feelings towards outrageously priced star-driven productions."
Othello didn't invite Drama Desk voters so it wasn't get nominated, even though it was bad anyway.

Boop getting any nominations beyond Jasmine is insanity.

Is Megan not beloved in the industry or just missed too many shows?

Ask that question if she misses a Tony nomination tomorrow, not a Drama Desk nom which has nothing to do with how the industry is feeling.
I’m not saying this to be snarky but genuinely what is the point of all of these different award ceremony ‘providers’. Every year we complain that the Tonys sometimes mean nothing and that the audience is dwindling. What does that mean for everyone else? (I guess there is some differentiation if off broadway involved but still).

It's going to get Tony nominations for choreo, costumes, and score at the very least as well tomorrow. You can be a hater without losing touch with reality.

2-D characters going into a different dimension?

That is definitely not a sure thing by any means. Especially Score. It could get all of those but it's not a lock for any.

They’re both stage adaptations of well-known IPs with mixed critical reception, especially regarding their scripts. Both are seen more as commercial draws for tourists than artistic achievements. That’s what makes the Drama Desk nominations interesting: Stranger Things was shut out of Best Play, likely due to its weak writing, yet Boop, which got similar criticism, still landed a Best Musical nod. It highlights a double standard in how the committee evaluates artistic merit between plays and musicals.

Of the 3 women eligible, I just loved Lesli Margherita - Joy was blah - she never commanded the stage. Surprised about Danny not being nominated. IMO he and Lesli were the best parts of the show.
On another note: neither Ramin nor DHP for Pirates, which was also ignored for best Revival.

Is anyone else stunned that the Drama Desk has a Best Revue category, and didn’t nominate Old Friends for it?

Has any organization ever tried to institute a true precursor to the Tonys, with a similar scope in terms eligibility and award categories? Maybe this industry is a little too niche for something like that, but I think this would be more interesting than the offerings of the existing "providers" (to borrow your word), which differ in their coverage.

What would be the point when they can just have the Tonys? I don't know the film awards well enough but my understanding is that partially because the Academy is so big and people wear multiple hats/belong to different memberships that's why there can be so much overlap for things like SAG but if the goal is to create another award body that mimics the Tonys, why bother?

The Outer Critics Circle was originally founded by journalists who were excluded from membership in the New York Drama Critics Circle. (The name "Outer Critics" comes from the fact that most of the members wrote for suburban and regional publications, whereas the NYDCC only accepted journalists who wrote for New York City publications.) It's exactly the same age as the Tony Awards. The Drama Desk has existed in one form or another since 1955. It originally recognized only Off-Broadway productions but began considering Broadway along the way. I don't think either organization has ever described itself as a forerunner to the Tonys. The Drama Desk is the only major awards body that honors New York theater at all professional levels. The Drama League has existed since 1922. We tend to be Broadway- and Tony-focused here, but there are obviously still value in organizations that honor theater that happens all over the city, not just over the course of 12 blocks in midtown.

I'm going back to this post and my answer and the fact that she got nominated for the Tony today. This is why I'm always right on these boards.
