Absolutely devastated.

"His death, in a hospital, was confirmed by his mother, Suzanne Sheik, who said that the cause was organ failure." EDIT: NYT now specifying that the cause was cardiac arrest.

Holy s#!t.

Especially sad considering he had the SA revival and two brand new projects getting up and running - one of which (NERO with Andrew Barth Feldman) was announcing just a few hours ago.

Heartbroken. An incredibly talented musician and, by all accounts, a good guy. It goes without saying, given my handle on here, but he’s part of a work of art that fundamentally changed my life and I’m so grateful for that. I’m sure this production of Spring Awakening will be dedicated to him now in some way.

Like everyone else my age, Spring Awakening was one of my first entrypoints into loving musical theatre. Most of the other shows I first listened to at that age, I've softened on or even cringe at now. Spring Awakening just gets better and better every time I listen to it.

RIP Duncan, you were a real one.

Absolutely heartbreaking. I realize it’s hardly a rarity to say SPRING AWAKENING was very formative for me, but it also speaks to how impactful that musical was and continues to be. May his legacy live on.

Echoing several others, but Spring Awakening absolutely changed my life and I don't know who I would be today without it. His music from that show is forever engrained in me and for it I will forever be grateful. I got to meet him at the original production's closing and got him to sign my In The Flesh book and he was so lovely. I hope he knows just how deeply the work he did impacted so many. Sending so much love and light to his family and friends.

May the upcoming revival of Spring Awakening and the other productions of his work be a testament to his memory and work. <3

So sad, so much talent. I met him at the Atlantic, the summer SA premiered, very nice guy. I was a big fan of his music. And, of course, I loved SA so much. I saw it 12 times at the Atlantic and so many more when it moved uptown. This one stings.

It’s a special and rare thing to write a show that “raises” a generation of theatre kids and opens their eyes to what musical theatre can do. RENT, SPRING AWAKENING, and HAMILTON all did that (arguably - very arguably - for the first time since COMPANY in the 70s.

Shocking and all the more tragic for happening on the eve of what was looking like to be a major season for him.

Sheik was one of my favorite examples of someone for whom lightning struck again and again; just when you were ready to count him out or assume his best was past, he'd come back with something that made you realize he hadn't even slowed down. He was the closest thing the musical theatre community has ever had to a genuine cult hero, and his ability to create work that resonated with the mainstream while being decidedly alternative will not soon be forgotten.

I am a huge fan of the Spring Awakening demo album, which someone first gave me back in college circa 2008 and which I consider not only one of my favorite theatre records but maybe my favorite indie record of all time. If you haven't listened to his stripped back, 2000s indie recordings of the score, definitely do so today. It could have been released as a solo album in its own right.

This is one of those deaths where there might be a real discussion between the Committee of Theatre Owners about a solo light-dimming or part of the quarterly group.

Two musicals (one produced twice on Broadway, one a big flop), two Tonys (for Score and Orchestrations), and a young death, but his body of work existed more substantially Off-Bway and in other areas of the theatre.

Reading his NY Times' obituary (something I never thought I'd have to read so soon) I'd totally forgotten we went to the same high school, graduating about 8 years before me.
Spring Awakening was transformative for so many musical theatre lovers, whether it be their introduction to the form, or those of us who'd been around the block a few times.
Musical theatre brings people together and it one shot, he created a lasting legacy. He will be missed.

Major loss for the theater community and music as a whole. So talented. My heart is broken. “Barely Breathing” was a personal anthem. It’s hitting differently now.

I met him at The Atlantic Theater during intermission for "Spring Awakening". (It was the evening they found out they were transferring to Broadway) Told him how much I was enjoying the show and congratulated him. I also got the chance to tell him how much I loved his original music for the film "A Home at the End of the World". He chuckled and thanked me and said he didn't think anyone heard it or was even still listening to it. I told him I was and will continue to (And I still do). I know I have listened to the song "There's A Home" , my favorite song by him, way more than "Barely Breathing"(So that's a lot!).

May he rest in Peace. Gone too soon.

Wow, what a loss of talent who was just about to experience a really great renaissance almost.

When I read this, I instantly started hearing that first bit of music at the top of "Spring Awakening" in "Mama who Bore Me" those deep strings accurately capture the mood for me.

To have your first musical that you've composed enter the theater cannon like SA has, is truly remarkable, and I would love to experience a production of "American Psycho" live some time.

I may try to catch this off-broadway revival now. My interest was piqued, but this adds a whole new depth of emotion for me. Not to compare, but I do see similarities between this and to how people may have felt when Jonathan Larson passed right before the opening of RENT.

Yeah, that's the one. There's some fascinating stuff on there: the demo of "I Believe" is this VERY 2000s mix of indie acoustic rock and hip-hop beats. It's the sort of thing you'd expect Kanye to go nuts for, before Kanye just went nuts period. "A Comet On Its Way" is a much darker and less upbeat teen-masturbation-emo anthem than "Bitch of Living," and there's a VERY different take on "Totally F*cked," performed as what I'm assuming is a Magnetic Fields homage.

There's also one of my favorite oddities, a half finished song called "Great Sex," an acoustic ditty where most of the lyrics are "la dee da, great sex," and a spoken word vocal keeps coming in to echo "GREAT sex." It's both very Lonely Island esque, and an interesting look at a version of Spring Awakening that leaned more into its comedic sensibility than its emo sincerity.
