Needing a little bit of help with some costuming stuff, does anyone have any idea what leotard Wicked uses for Elphaba? I'm working on an Ursula right now and can't find anything like what the Elphies wear. Thanks in advance!

She wears it under her costumes so they don't have to paint her entire upper body green

Trying to avoid having to completely cover my actress in makeup, just like they do with the Elphabas

I don't think you can buy the bodysuit anywhere if that's what you're asking. Elphaba wears a bodysuit so they don't have to paint her arms and chest green and it's custom made, I think. It looks like it's made out of some sort of pantyhose or tights material, if that helps at all.

The neck and wrist openings are not finished so they blend in with her skin and the rest of the seams are made on a special machine so they are not visible. It has to be hand washed after every performance, she has two that she rotates and they wear out very quickly.

I'd just get a flash colored one and paint/dye it as close in color as possible

Depending on how professional your production is, would this work?:

Amazon has many many options and colors. Just search for full body lycra body suit. They have them with or without hands and/or feet.

Reading this thread, I kept bouncing back and forth between "this is sexual" and "this isn't sexual..."

If you are following the Disney design as an influence, having a necklace will help disguise the seam, as would gauntlet/bracelets like King Tritons around her wrists

I just hope the necklace disguises the seam better than the necklace disguising the fake chest piece Lea Thompson wore in Back to the Future 2.

What an odd topic and question. I don’t know much about costume design but aren’t all leotards/body stockings basically the same? Is there really that much variation in material and design? Some may be thicker I suppose or different quality. But a leotard is a leotard is a leotard, right?

If you're just looking to cover her arms, you could do something like this leotard under a dress. Or just put her in long purple gloves. https://www.discountdance.com/dancewear/style_N7680_html?pid=28775&shop=Style&&skey=Sheer+Leotard&search=true&SortOrder=R&rfilter=Color%23Purple&SID=1292961189

I am sure at this point in the game the costume builder's have bolts of customer dyed fabric and construct the unitards according to the actresses measurements. Unitards are not hard to make at all.

Of course they do on the professional level...but the original poster may be costuming at the community theatre level and looking for creative ideas.
