a bad mimi can really ruin rent and i've seen a few, but as for the best...
with the execption of daphne rubin vega... who i think is amazing & can't belive she's not going to be cast in the movie!!
i think that marcy harriell was the best!!! she was just amazing... she replaced daphne on broadway. also she will soon be in the new john lennon musical.
i wish i had seen mya days as mimi... i heard she was good!
"But I relish every brillant inspired moment. This is who I'm determined to be- an actor/singer/dancer-no, I take that back, this is who I am. These people are my tribe, my destiny. I know it.

I DEFINITELY LIKE KRYSTAL WASHINGTON OVER KARMINE. SORRY GIRLS/BOYS, but i have not seen any other Mimi cry EVERYTIME during the ILL COVER YOU reprise. She has real tears flowing down her face, it gets me everytime.
Karmine played Mimi with vulnerability, sass, and a kind of confidence that let you know the character is hurt, but not broken. I thought she was wonderful.
I think Tallia has a killer voice. I have heard MANY Mimis through *cough cough*, undisclosed sources, and she does the "oowooohhhoowwwoohhowowowow" in Out Tonight like it's nobody's business!

I would say Daphne if i saw her but that said, Domonique roy or Karmine alers.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

She was the real deal. I believed she was young, cracked out, and out to sabatoge her own life. Plus her OT was FIERCE. She sounded great, looked great, and really captured the character. Other actresses I've seen (like Simone) tried to just impress vocally, but Mimi's gotta be a good actress and Maya pulled it off flawlessly.
I saw Caren Lyn Manuel go on as Mimi on December 30th. She was BEAUTIFUL and a great actress but she was pretty awful at singing. The only song she pulled off was "Without You". Everything else was pretty bad.
I'd say for me it's a tie between Krystal and Dominique Roy. They were both amazing.....I also was forced to sit through Mel B and that was just horrid. I now see that a good Mimi totally makes the show.
"Because what is more like love than the ocean? You can play in it, drown in it. It can be clear and bright enough to hurt your eyes, or covered in fog; hidden behind a curve of road, and then suddenly there in full glory. Its waves come like breaths, in and out, in and out, body stretched to forever in its possibilities, and yet its heart lies deep, not fully knowable, inconceivably majestic."
Letty: I have seen/heard Caren do a great number of things (Mark's Mom is the only role I have seen her do from Rent) and I have to tell ya, I about as shocked at your comment that she is an awful singer. I don't think I have ever heard anyone express a negative opinion about her voice. Of course, it may just be a matter of personal taste, or perhaps you saw her on an off night, but I count Caren's solo CD as one of my alltime faves (partly because of her voice. Partly because of the music) and her show is another favorite of mine that I happened to see at the Fringe Festival. ("Womyn In Three") It really showed off her pipes! But, eh, to each his own. Can't please all the people...
I've got to stand by Daphne Rubin-Vega as the best Mimi. She had real attitude and passion and I loved the uniqueness of her voice. It could be really strong and powerful but it could also be vulnerable and hurting. I was so disappointed to hear taht she wasnt going to be in the movie but Rosario Dawson was a great choice.
I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart.

"During this performance, please feel free to let your cell phones and pagers ring willy-nilly. However, do remember that there are heavily-armed knights on stage and you might well be dragged up and impaled."
