Donald O'Conner's "Make 'Em Laugh" number in Singin' In The Rain. Impossibly entertaining. The "Moses Supposes" number too, actually. Every time I watch them, it's like there's nothing else in the world I'd rather be doing.
Seconded. This type of OTT physical humour should be cringeworthy, but O'Conner pulls it off amazingly and always cracks me up. :3
i second many of these. especially funny girl and chicago!
i love most things about singin' in the rain as well.
for me, in west side story the whole opening with the jets and the sharks, with the fighting as dancing. ah, it's just gorgeous. AND dance at the gym. that entire sequence is pure magic. one of my favorite musical scenes ever. and america. the dancing in that is flawless. rita morena is perfect!
and in my fair lady, in the beginning with the street vendors entering and then freezing and repeating that. i love that. so musical theatre. haha.
i love i enjoy being a girl in flower drum song as well. i love nancy kwon.
and since i just watched easter parade.. i the scene with garland and astaire dressed as hobos singing "we're a couple of swells" haha just love it.
in brigadoon, the macconnachy square sequence and the bonnie jean dancing as well. love it.
and OH! in an american in paris.. well i love everything there, but mainly the american in paris ballet at the very end. and with the introduction of leslie caron when they're describing they're perfect girl and she is embodying them towards the beginning. i love that as well.
EDIT. ^
hear my song; it was made for the time when you don't know where to go, listen to the song that i sing, you'll be fine..
From EASTER PARADE, which just played on TCM, the number "Shakin' The Blues Away" as sung and danced by the incomparable Ann Miller, who incidentally steals the whole movie from Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. Viva Ann Miller!!!
I was fortunate in seeing Ann Miller starring on Broadway in MAME, following Angela Lansbury. The creators wrote a specialty tap dance number for her, added to the regular score. I also enjoyed seeing her in SUGAR BABIES with Micky Rooney. What a talent!
The whole gym scene in West Side Story, particularly when Maria and Tony get lost in a dream of Maria, along with soft finger snaps and blurry, colorful modernism.
America.
Cell Block Tango.
In an otherwise miserable movie, "A weekend in the Country" does suggest the wit and verve of the stage version.
All of the Cabaret musical numbers. I love them all. Fantastic.
Also: Cool, The Dance at the Gym, and America in WSS. Such amazing performances.
Mr. Cellophane in Chicago. Love that.
And, the best moment for me, Ray Bolger singing "If I Only Had a Brain" in The Wizard of Oz. That is possibly my favorite moment in a movie ever.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
I just finished watching "Easter Parade" and was coming here to post abput Shakin' The Blues Away. Gypsy9 beat me to it!
A few others: That's Entertainment in The Bandwagon The Trolley Song in Meet Me In St. Louis Liza singing New York, New York in New York, New York Two Lost Souls in the Damn Yankees movie.
Recent greats: The cuts to Roxie and Fred throughout "All That Jazz" in Chicago are exciting. A lot of moments in Moulin Rouge...I think I'll go with the part when "Your Song" really picks up and they go into the fantasy "Eiffel Tower" sequence. And something always makes me laugh when I see that little snippet in the first dance hall scene after Satine has been carried off unconcious and Zidler starts the "Hunkadola".
As for some less-adored movie musicals of recent years...the "post-prologue" opening numbers of both The Phantom of the Opera and Rent (the Overture and "Rent", respectively) were just explosive and awesome (the true meaning of that word) on the big screen. Many other moments in those two were just beautiful to look at, if nothing else. In Phantom, I love the curtain flying open behind the iron gate in the lake sequence of the title song, and in Rent there are just countless looks and gestures the cast give each other that make you know they're really old friends.
Classics: I love the opening "red carpet" sequence of Singin' in the Rain, as well as the moment Debbie Reynolds pops out of the giant cake and sees Gene Kelly. Tons in West Side Story, especially Rita Moreno's skirt swish in "America" and a few quick, exciting shots near the end of the prologue where the Sharks and the Jets all descend on the playground.
My current favorite is the entire Central Park "Be-In" in Hair. The song "Initials", and the moments that follow leading up to the exciting beginning of "Electric Blues", are brilliant scene-setters. I especially love the spastic woman in white and the group that dances as if they are suspended from balloons.
"If there is going to be a restoration fee, there should also be a Renaissance fee, a Middle Ages fee and a Dark Ages fee. Someone must have men in the back room making up names, euphemisms for profit."
(Emanuel Azenberg)
"And in the RENT film, I absolutely adore the deleted ending where the actors re-assembled into their Seasons of Love formation on stage with the spotlights with only Angel's spot empty. And then he walks back on... so cheesy but I honestly loved it."
I agree with this, and when I saw this on the DVD, I was so angry that Columbus chose the ending that actually appeared in the film over this one. The deleted version is SO much more moving, and perfectly bookended the opening shot.
A few other favorite musical numbers, some of which have been mentioned:
'Cell Block Tango' - Chicago 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes' and 'Dancing' - Hello, Dolly! 'There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This' and 'Rich Man's Frug' - Sweet Charity 'The Saga of Jenny' - Star! 'Somewhere That's Green' - Little Shop of Horrors
"Word of advice: Be who you are, wear what you want---just learn how to run real fast." Marc, UGLY BETTY
Most of mine have been said, but I actually really liked the whole "Listen" part of the Dreamgirls movie. Oh and "Tom, Dick, or Harry" from Kiss Me Kate
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!"
-Kermit the frog"I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P."Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu""...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu
After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu
Yeah I have to say that my favorite part of any movie ever is "Roxanne" in Moulin Rouge, the whole number is incredible.
Also, Wizard of Oz, there is something about "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" that I love right at the end when she kinda pets Toto and everyone is just reveling from her performance!! LOVE
Lena Horne performing, "Stormy Weather." was pretty moving to me. I have to say the OZ sequence in the Wiz. Cell block Tango from Chicago was amazing, great looking women with amazing legs. Hehe. Roxanne from Moulin Rouge was brilliant and powerful..summed up the movie..can be no love when there is no trust. Too many others to name.
I'm not gonna hate you in the magazines,
(I'm better than that)
I'm not gonna compromise my Christianity,
(I'm better than that)
You know I'm not gonna diss you on the Internet
Cause my momma taught me better than that.
I think my top five are as follows: 1) AIATY in Dreamgirls 2) The Sound of Music in TSOM 3) Cabaret in CABARET 4) The final scene(s) of WEST SIDE STORY 5) All That Jazz in CHICAGO
RevolutionaryCostume-"Champagne" is absolutely brilliant. I love Ann Margaret's expression of ecstasy as she wallows in baked beans, bubbles, and melted chocolate.
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
