"How is this different from a celebrity who just does a squiggly line that could've been done by anyone? Or a celebrity that has a personal assistant do it for them?"
If I asked for a signed headshot in the mail, then it seems reasonable that there is no guarantee as to how it was signed, etc.
But when you are at the theater, with the person standing there live, and the BC/EFA appeal is offering posters signed by the whole cast, it does seem like what you are being offered is not what you are actually receiving.
Ever think that maybe Fran doesn't have the time or energy after 8 shows a week to sign hundreds of items at a time? So, she had a stamp made of her signature and it makes things a little easier. But she STILL signs for a lot of people on a daily basis.
I've loved Fran since I was a kid. I'm a HUGE fan that geeked out and had to sit down on the sidewalk after meeting her for the first time. FRAN was charming, lovely, generous. She hugged me, chatted with me for a while, posed for a picture, signed my Playbill... And a few months later when I met her again, she not only remembered my face, but my name. And we chatted all over again.
Yes, it's for a charity. But she's also human and not a machine, and maybe she's just a little tired. Move on. Trust me - there are bigger, selfish and far more nasty divas than Fran .

Talk about a non-issue. There are literally hundreds of thousands of things more worth getting upset about.
Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.
I was just letting people know in case they thought they actually had something she signed and in truth- they don't. it's the fact that she kept lying over and over again until finally admitting it- She did not have to sign the playbills at all- that way she would not deceive people, or owned up to it right off the bat.
The performance I attended, Fran happily signed for fans and was a total sweetheart. I'd met her backstage actually, as I had a friend in the show. But as we all exited, Fran stopped and signed for people.
Maybe she doesn't sign every night - a lot of people don't. But I've certainly seen her sign.

When I was working at the Marquis during Donnie and Marie, they each spent literally about an hour (or more!) singing things. Every cd, every photo, every book, etc were all signed by them. Granted, they were selling these items themselves for a profit (but not charging more than they would have for an unsigned cd) and not for a charity. I was still in awe seeing them sign and sign and sign without complaining.
To be super technical, "autograph" doesn't mean she has to sign her name. An autograph, at it's root, is just a distinguishing marking, distinctive to you.. It doesn't even need to be a signature . I have seen people who's autograph is initials and a smily.. If Fran's is a stamp, it is still TECHNICALLY her autograph.
In all honesty, Id rather a stamp of a prominent celebrity's legible signature than a squiggle.
If you want to talk about street value-compare a signature of Idina's from the past to the current straight line she slashes on Playbills. You could never ever say she signed it.

"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello

Idina's signature on the signed If/Then posters/playbills for BC/EFA was very legible and spelled out.
Stop being a bitch, you're not good at it. Leah Michelle was doing eight shows a week and still managed to attend the Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS Flea Market signing table raising funds more than once. No need to drag her into this.
