Nothing to get your titties in a twist over, but I do find it interesting how often artwork for musical-themed shows (stage/screen/television) copy each other. More than likely because the graphic designers are "inspired" by previous work in that genre, but still...let's have some originality, people!
Why would the show start being original now?

I'd say I definitely associate that style of artwork more with The Brady Bunch than Hairspray.
Or the Brady Bunch meets Hairspray.
(Because I thought Brady Bunch too.)
I'm confused...so are they releasing the first season in two separate DVDs? What the hell is the point of that?
reminds me of the tv show GREEK.

I don't know if I want to buy this. I may just wait until the season is over and just see if they will offer a Season 1 DVD.

Because they can charge $50 for each rather than $50 for one. Love Boat is doing the same thing. Season One Volume One and on. That show ran for ten seasons - that's 20 DVDs.

That is $1000 they can get from EVERY sucker who buys them all.
Actually, it's less than $600
What are the chances of them release it as one set when they release Volume II do you think?

My mistake. I was going by DVD count.
Read the article. They are of course separating Season 1 into two DVDs to make money...but originally FOX only ordered 13 episodes of GLEE. They later picked up the series for a complete season, thus they are adding several new episodes (I think 7 more?) to make (20?).
I LOVE LUCY sold Season 1 into 9 individual DVD volumes, originally. Beginning with Season 2, the series was then sold by the season. After its final season was released, Season 1 was re-released in one complete volume condensed into 4 DVDs.
It's all about the money. DVDs get re-released all the time. SNOW WHITE just got released AGAIN in a special edition when it had already received one. There are dozens of other Disney animated features which still have not received special editions, including HERCULES and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.
My mistake. I was going by DVD count.
Love Boat isn't as expensive. I have no real qualm with them issuing half seasons. I get why they do it. But $50 for a few episodes is too much. LB is less than $30 per amazon.com for about 13 hour long episodes.

It's possible. Using Love Boat as an example again (sorry - it's the only other show I know of that does this) they are selling seasons 1 & 2, four sets, for $114 on amazon.com

Curtains had that artwork too.
Any word on a Blu Ray release for this?
It reminds me more of Curtains than Hairspray. It's a very common design. I don't think they intentionally tried to "rip-off" Hairspray.
I saw every season of Friends and Seinfeld for $15/ea at Walmart the other day.
I once saw every season of Sex and the City and Friends for $8 at target. And my mom bought them for the ridiculous $40 or whatever they were each time they came out brand new....
wait for sales :)
and yes, that is a very common design, and I doubt Hairspray was the first to have it.

A friend of mine has had this icon on Livejournal for months. Think she should sue over the cribbing of her groundbreaking artistic concept?
Seriously. That's a common motif.
"I'm confused...so are they releasing the first season in two separate DVDs? What the hell is the point of that?"
I hate when they do that, because TV seasons are expensive, and they will charge the same price for a half a season as they will one full season.

That Sex and the City thing was a Black Friday special last year, although I think they've come close pricewise since.
I have no issues with the cover design...it's a smart way of getting all the central characters in one place sort of on equal footing.
Not too keen on the splitting the season either but they didn't know they had a full season pickup until the DVD had already been announced.
I like it. But then I also liked the Hairspray poster.
How about every season of Grey's Anatomy? I suppose we're in for a musicalized episode of this show soon too! LOL
