Somebody posted in another thread that on certain days Giants In The Sky was cut because of Adam Wylie. Is there any truth to this?
I wouldn't be surprised. Listening to him sing that song was like listening to a buzzsaw for 2 and a half minutes.
he sang it in the performance i saw...and it was painful.
is he that redheaded fellow? if so, that makes perfect sense. i caught a bootleg of the revival and his rendition was atrocious.
So apparently they didn't cut it but they should have...
He sounds awful on the cast recording but then again so does most of the cast.
That would be just stupid, why hire him if that was the case. I am a very huge fan of Adam Wylie, I find him to be a nice guy and a great actor. He is doing great in Wicked at the moment.
He was really, really not good. Just kinda boring. Chad Kimball was much, much better and way, way cute!

I saw him recently in Wicked. Yikes. He was a decent actor, but his voice...wow, they could have picked someone way way better.

I remember reading on the Sondheim.com message boards about it being cut once in a while. I will do some investigative research and get back to you...
It is true. It was cut for the performance I saw. And from what I've heard on the cast recording, I'm glad I wasn't subjected to it in person. The rest of the show was painful/boring/misdirected/miscast enough.
THERE ARE GYYYYYANTS in the SKY-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y--y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Not really surprising, because most of the revival cast was pretty much awful. Mary Louise Burke made me want to hang myself. But back on Wylie, is the song really that difficult? And its Jack's only solo, so that kinda sucks for him.

Very miscast. The production was not SO SO SO bad. The cow was funny and the princes and cinderalla were really good. The new special effects were also nice....BUT OYE! The casting!! Jack's Mom...OYE! Could NOT take her eye off the conductor...the baker OYE!!!! and Yawn!!!!......Little Red OYE! and HOW was she cast?!?!?......The whole time, I am thinking how much I missed the original cast. There was simply no charm in the revival....the sense of fun from the original was gone. But, yeah Giants in the Sky was sung the day I was there. I have never heard of a whole song being cut.....
Am I the ONLY one who enjoys that cast recording?
I think, as others have said before, that most of the problems arose because Lapine, who directed the original, also directed the revival. I think that was just...not smart. It was a revival so I would have liked to have seen it revived, not just replayed. It needed more life, a different perspective maybe. I feel bad for Adam because he was just completely...not good in the role. Positives of the revival? I guess I would say certain special effects/make-up and, of course, more recognition for Laura Benanti.
Was his body/voice going through "the change" at the time?
He's 21 now. He was 16 then. If he was going through the voice change at 16... poor boy! Late bloomer.

In response to many:
-ljay--I do really enjoy this cast recording as well.
-I especially loved Stephen DeRosa as the Baker! I found him totally enduring. Ditto Kerry O'Malley--just love her upper register (where is SHE now?) The only cast member I didn't like was Jack's Mother...just. not. a. singer.
-"Giants in the Sky" is rather difficult, yes. Especially the last few phrases. I believe it goes up to an A.
-Adam's voice wasn't in the supremely-awkward adolescent phase, but it had not yet fully matured either. Plus it didn't seem like he'd done a lot (if any?) singing prior to ITW.
-The current consensus on Finishing the Chat is the song was cut at least once when they ran out of understudies/standbys. But others do recall hearing it might have been more than once.

Giants in the Sky only goes up to an F, if I remember correctly. I played Jack a few years ago, and I can not hit an A, and I had no problem singing the role.

I hate to admit this, but I adored Jack's Mother. I was pretty young at the time, so not as critical as I am now, but I found her to be a riot.

How about Vanessa Williams? Did we like her? I was surprised by her performance (from what I've seen). She is no Bernadette, but she definitely wasn't as awful as some of the people she shared the stage with!

I also enjoy this recording. Adam was the only cast memeber I had any porblem with back when I saw it.

LuckyDaveJr. - Did you do ITW Junior? That has lower keyes. Or your musical director may have made use of MTI's transpositions-on-demand if he/she knew your vocal range. The vocal selections, too, may have a lower range.
OR I could be totally wrong and it's not as high as I think. Anyone have an actual score and can tell us?
Also--I adorded Vanessa Williams in the show. Completely different than Bernadette, but equally effective in my book. She was Tony-nominated that year, as were John McMartin, Laura Benanti, and (strangely) Gregg Edlemann (I found Chris Sieber to be the stronger of the two princes).

I liked thecontrast ofthe two princes in the revival - Edelman as the always smiling, vacant "charming" prince and Seiber as the intense, serious one. In the original, both princes were pretty much identical in personality.
