After multiple viewings I am finding all these lil gems. Wonderful moments that can only be seen when watched more than once.
and can I say, Michelle gave SO much life to Velma- she really did a wonderful job in this.

The theatre I was in was pretty full, but that's not so remarkable considering that there was only one screen playing it in the 10-screen multiplex.
There was a large faction of girls who cooed whenever Link did anything.
Some people applauded at the end of the movie. All told, I'd say it was really well received. My girlfriend, who had no interest in seeing it initially, really liked it... couldn't stop laughing at some parts.

My favorite characters will probably always be The Dynamites and Lil' Inez.
Of course I love all the leads, but I just love The Dynamites and Inez so much.

The theatre was full in downtown DC last night. There was a lot of audible shock at some of the lines that are in the stage version (and lyrics) so I think many were encountering the musical version for the first time.
There was also an interacial brawl between two sets of kids who were maybe 13 or 14. They had to be escorted out in the middle. Appropriate movie for this to happen at, no?

No one cheered until the end of the movie! But it was packed! A lot of people wore their Hairspray Musical Shirts!
Everyone seemed to enjoy John as Edna! But the audience loved the movie!

I was at a 7:30 showing at a theater in Jersey that was packed to the max. The audience loved it. Besides the young girls sighing each time Link appeared on screen, they also clapped to the music on several occasions.
There was also a great round of applause when Penny and Seaweed kissed. Many stayed to watch the end credits.

The theatre here was PACKED! I was so suprised! Lots of laughter and smiles throughout. Applauses throughout and at the end. There was a row of screaming girls at the end when Zac's name came on the credits but they didn't scream during the movie thank goodness!! I was excited it was recieved so well.

I went twice yesterday:
11:15 A.M.: Theater was about 80% full, mostly with senior citizens. They all seemed to enjoy it very much, especially when Edna mentioned her iron and the whoopie cusion bed, and there was applause at the credits.
8:30 p.m.: SOLD OUT! Very excited crowd! Tons of laughter and scattered clapping, especially for the demon child part. Good deal of applause at the credits again. Also, I noticed at least 1 girl with a Tracy face fan and a Hairspray sash.

I went at 10:45 at night, but for 10:45, there were tons of people.
People were loving it.
Nikki and John got so many great laughs.
Amanda and Elijah had this women behind me in hysterics.
During New Girl In Town when it goes from Amber, Shelley, and Tammy to the Dynamites, the women behind me cheered loud.
She was very vocal.
She was surprised the door held when John bumped into it.
Me, I was in heaven.
I loved it.
I sung a bit to myself.
I danced a bit.
My friends thought I was crazy.
Oh, and the theater I went to had a giant HAIRSPRAY can display:

We saw the movie last night at the San Francisco Westfield Shopping Center and it was 80% full.

I saw it last night. I was orginally going to see the 5pm showing, but got there at quarter of, and it was already sold out. So we bought tickets for the 7:45 showing.
Go there about 7:30, and the theatre was PACKED. The only place where there was three seats together (me, mom, sister) was the 2nd row. But oh well.
But the reaction? Everyone generally seemed to like it. Got alot of laughs (John Waters cameo got the first big laugh).
But I could tell there were alot of teenyboppers in the audience because as soon as Zac came on screen, there were squeels. And many other times when he had a close up, there were squeels as well. oh well.
When Traci and Link finally kissed at the end, there was applause, which was cute.

I went to a 5:30 showing in CT and everyone loved it. Everyone applauded when Tracy joined the Corny Collins show soon as she went "and I'm TRACY" the crowd went nuts it was great. Everyone was laughing and having fun but the biggest laughs were during "Without Love", Johns Tina Turner dance, anytime Alison Janney spoke, and the biggest was during "It's Hairspray" when Corny went "Hey baby you look like you can use a stiff one" and Amber winked at the camera everyone lost it including myself it was hilarious! I loved it and might be going again to see it tonight!!!

The showing I went to had a crowd mainly comprised of old people, who at the end of the movie, all started applauding. They were a great audience, except for like these two old ladies in fornt of me who kept hissing to each other "Is that the boy from that movie that they all like?" and "Oh, I remember when my living room looked like that!", then pausing to unwrap crinkly candies, then continuing in raised voices anytime someone was singing. My favorite part was at the end of the movie when we were leaving, and the one woman turned to her friend and said "So did he ever figure out his wife was a man?".
"Your lyrics lack subtlety! You can't just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!"

My theatre seemed to switch between 60% and 100% throughout the whole movie. It was annoying because there was a noticable pause in audio in between each switch.
The audience seemed to like it. There wasn't any applause until the end (and even then very weak), but everyone laughed throughout the whole thing ("I believe it is naturally stiff" got the first HUGE laugh). The theatre wasn't completly full, but it was mostly (although it pissed me off that a lot of people came in AFTER GMB).
On a side note some old man in front of me and my friend yelled at us for talking during THE CREDITS (TWICE TOO)!
So we were listening to about 60% of the full sound the entire movie.

Ijust got back from seeing it again, though this time it was at an upscale theatre in outer DC. The audience composition was very different and less diverse (i.e. very white, lots of heterosexual couples. I was one of the younger people (a 20-something) and many appeared to be over 60. The theatre was about half full. The reaction was much more subdued but there was a pattering of laughter here and there- mostly with John Travolta's scenes and Allison Janey's.

The audience went nuts when John and Chris spun around and were in the Tango outfits. They lost it. They also lost it when John said: "You can't eat?!"

The reaction at my theater were horrendous and rude. Half loved it and clapped at the end, and the other half consisted of immature teens who didn't even WANT to see the movie who were just there to freakin bash and ruin everything. Kids were yelling out things like "fags", "are there boobs in this", kids behind left during Good Morning Baltimore saying loudly "this is gay". During I Know Were I've Been they started raising their cell phones and swaying them back and forth in the air mocking what was going on in the film. During You Can't Stop The Beat, these rude kids actually stood up and started DANCING obnoxiously down the aisles hitting the back of my seat. All of there things were not done out of fun, but out a sheer disrespect. I heard so many horrible things from them. Even making fun of Nikki, which really pissed me off. Through the entire movie they talked amongst themselves loudly as if it was there private living room. I payed ten dollars to see the movie which was basically screwed up by these people. Hopefully I will see it again without these usless f**** to deel with.

People LOVED it here. There was alot of clapping and laughing and generall overall cheering. There was one guy who was being disruptive at the beginning shouting evil, nasty things; but seeing as i work at the theatre i was at I just got three of the managers and they threw him out.
