I just don't associate LuPone with the warmth of a character like Dolly. On stage, nice she ain't. She comes off as the type who would sit on a pile of money, rather than spread it around like manure. But who knows.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Patti LuPone, while a marvelous performer, just doesn't fit for Dolly in my opinion. I agree with Kad that Patti doesn't have the warmth needed for the role. I just hope they don't do any stunt casting for this and drag out Catherine Zeta Jones again. Yikes.
i am torn about this...in Gypsy when she was flirting I loved her playfulness so hopefully she can make this fun...She certainly can sing it (hopfully not garbled like she can do)
If you were to revive DOLLY, you need to do it with a splash.. with a HUGE HEADLINING NAME.. yes, even bigger than LuPone. Yes, she is a reigning queen on Broadway... but it's not like she's a household name to most of America.
What about Bibi Osterwald? I saw her do Dolly twice. I saw Channing three times in the OBC, Martha Raye and Merman four times. the best? Merman. I'd like to see Patti do it.

That's why I keep calling for Reba to play this. Folks are saying she wants to play against type, and I think this is perfect for her. It's not written for a southerner, but no reason it can't be played by one. She'll sing the hell out of the score, and she's very funny.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."
-- Thomas Jefferson
Herman said Reba was a choice he wasn't so sure about, mainly because of the accent.
And whyohwhyoh, your comment made me remember this part was originally written for Merman. And LuPone has associated with many a Merman show, so this may be a better fit than some think. Strange logic, but that's where my mind went.
If Patti were to do the revival, she would have done Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy, and Dolly, all in the same order as Merman. Does this mean anything? No. It was just interesting.
If you didn't have to cast a name for the part I would throw Victoria Clark in. I would LOVE to see her do that part.
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
The biggest bitch of all was Libby Thacher. I know it wasn't a Broadway role, but she plays all of her roles the same way anyway.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Patti always seems to play a bitch. Not because the character is, the Patti side of it just comes off as...Patti.
I've been dying for a revival of Dolly for years, but NOT with Patti. It's not that I hate her, I just think it's a cop-out going with her. Like, who has played all the Merman roles? LuPone! Let's just get her!
If we're talking about just Broadway talent, I think Joanna Gleason would be amazing in the role.
I have to agree that Lupone doesnt seem right for this: there's an undercurrent of anger in almost everything she's done -- her turn as the Old Lady in the recent CANDIDE was frightening. Bang on for the character, but still frightening in the amount of barely repressed anger she conveyed.
Peters? No. If anything, it would be too much in the opposite direction, a little child-woman... which is not what Dolly is either. Reba would be interesting, but it'd be difficult to get past the accent, even for a star turn.
But if we want to get a little out there, it'd be fun to consider someone like Carol Burnett. She's overdue for a return to Broadway anyway, and face it: the tourist trade would *love* this.
