Anyone know about the January 11th matinee? At thelastship.com it is still listed as a performance, but on Ticketmaster it shows as cancelled which seems to be the case.
42nd Street ran for 3.5 years, are you sure it flopped? what did Garth Drabinsky do to Ragtime?
Lol, yes it flopped. Didn't even get close to recouping. It is too large of a theater; the Lyric will be a flophouse like the Gershwin was for years until something like Wicked comes along.
You can read in depth about Dabrinsky in related sites, but he formed Livent and therefore in charge of the original production of Ragtime. He went to get charged for fraud and the whole thing was a big scandal at the time.
Listen, I don't take my clothes off for anyone, even if it is "artistic". - JANICE
Just got back and I sincerely hope this doesn't close soon. The music is gorgeous, and it was pretty cool to see the songwriter taking part in the action. It's not perfect - what is? - but it was obviously his love letter to his hometown, and I enjoyed my visit.
A drunk man in a gay bar claiming to be the show's trombone player says it's closing with Sting. Seriously. Of course, it's 7:15 and he has a show in 45 minutes and is drunk in the village.
And then there's the fact that there's no trombone in the orchestra (or so says the opening night credits).
But hey...
"I know now that theatre saved my life." - Susan Stroman
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
The same thing happened with Rocky. They announced a new block of tickets on sale for I believe November. A few weeks later they posted a closing notice.
The issue, Wilmingtom, is not whether it will do better (obviously it won't), but whether the combination of increased revenue from his time with the show and the grosses after he leaves can sustain the show to the Tony mark. The jury is still out on that. (And the 69% you referenced is not the capacity, it is the percentage of gross potential, but that is the pertinent factor.

The grosses will go south really quickly after he leaves. If advanced sale after he leaves in below the Mendoza line, the producers may decided to pull the pin sooner rather than later. Some shows like Sideshow were a really tough sell. This also falls into that category but not to the same extent as Sideshow.
Obviously, you haven't seen it! I'm an avid theatre goer and I think it may well be one of the best shows I've ever seen. I've met many others who agree.
But it is a show for intelligent grown-ups, no pretty sets, no fancy clothes, no movie stars, no Disney.
It is original! Fine direction, excellent cast, emotional story, beautiful music and lyrics!
