Sure there are some funny moments and songs (The Song That Goes Like This and You Won't Succeed On Broadway are rather brilliant) but, overall, it's not nearly as good as the movie, which is one of the finest, oddest comedies I've ever seen.
The movie, as well as everything Monty Python has done, was surreal and absurd, a fact that I think many people forget. I mean this is a movie that abruptly ends when the characters are arrested for absolutely no reason. Here is a movie so absurd and random that it makes The Big Lebowski seem like Million Dollar Baby. If THAT movie were to be translated to the theater, it would be more like Waiting for Godot or The Bald Soprano.
Spamalot is in Shrek/Ella Enchanted territory. Oh wow. Lancelot is gay. El Oh El.
I saw it a few weeks ago and though i liked it, i agree that it's overrated. It's a fun show, but I don't think it deserved the Tony over Piazza or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
I agree it isn't that great. I think it got an extra boost because of who is in it. Titanic was the worst best musical ever. I saw it on broadway and in chicago. On broadway it was like an 8 and in chicago it was a 3.
I don't see why everyone is so sour about it. I think Spamalot is a very funny show that did deserve Best Musical. And by the way, I say this with having seen neither Tim Curry nor Hank Azaria, but I'm seeing it again in January, so here's hoping Hank is there that night.
My avatar = A screencap from Avatar, arguably the greatest animated show of all
It's not a matter of who is in it. It's a highly overrated show and just did not deserve to win Best Musical.
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"
Why anyone who has attained the status of "Broadway Legend" would be asking this question is beyond me. Anyone who has spent any length of time on this board at all since Spamalot began playing in Chicago would have seen plenty of evidence that many here do not like it. Virtually every thread that has mentioned Spamalot in any capacity whatsoever has elicited negative comments (usually from the same people, over and over again, in an almost Pavlovian fashion), even when the subject didn't particularly call for reactions to the show, either positive or negative - suggested times to get in line for SRO, for example.
Incidentally, calling those who enjoy the show (and there are a lot of people who do) "geeks" is entirely uncalled for.
I agree with Lady of the Lake. It seems like certain people wait for any topic on Spamalot just so they can trash it. Keeps us fans from posting. I haven't seen Piazza but I did see DRS and I still preferred Spamalot. I can see that it might not be for everyone but I think it's just pure silly fun. I think it has more mass appeal than Piazza and so it should have gotten Best Musical. Of course there is alot of hype about the show so people going in with too high expectations might be let down, but if they read the boards on here there are enough people trashing the show that I doubt that would happen.
I thought it was very overrated - there were good performances, I just didn't think the material was very good, and I really don't think it should have won the Tony. And I do understand that some people love it. I loved Thoroughly Modern Millie but many people didn't think it was worthy of the prize... it's all down to personal taste.
You know what show is overrated? Light in the Piazza! Talk about a STUPID plot! "Retarded girl finds love in Italy"== oh YEAH THAT IS ONE RIVETING STORYLINE! Plus, there is not a song in it that is the least bit tuneful, catchy or even hummable. It sounds like it was written by a community college music major for his final project in his "Meaningful Songwriting 101" class. Add to that the most homely cast in Musical theatre history! Ugh! If this show is ever revived it will be as a spoof of what passed for entertainment in the early 21st century!
I'm gonna go puke now just thinking about "Light in the Piazza."
No, I don't think the show is overrated, and it really isn't the worst "Best Musical".
If you go, I promise you that you'll laugh. It's a great show, with a great cast, and most of them are really nice. The music is a little lacking, but it still has a lot of great songs that get stuck in your head.
If your a Python fan, you'll love it. If you are anyone else, you'll love it. Some of these people just refuse it because it beat DRS or Piazza, but in my humble opinion it is better than both of those shows.
I haven't seen Spamalot simply because Monty Python is not my kind of "funny". Many people however love Monty Python, and they most likely would love the sense of humor in Spamalot.
