Ugh. I was across the theater but people starting coughing pretty uncontrollably and there was a lot of commotion. They kept us outside for awhile, initially said the show would resume but ending up canceling it a few minutes ago, people are pissed and want refunds. Walking home now.
Apparently, there was an argument that broke out because a woman was talking on her phone. It escalated until someone pulled out pepper spray and sprayed it.

This is fake news. I was at the matinee today. The phone argument happened in act 1 in house right. Then in Predator the back of house left was coughing and subsequently evacuated because of pepper spray being sprayed

Did the show resume eventually?

hi! i was at the mat and heres what happened:
so in the middle of im not the doctor, they was a women on the phone and ppl were yelling at her to stop so that was a whole thing.
so then later in act 2, right after predator, during the scene with mj and nick, ppl started coughing and getting up and then more ppl started getting up not knowing what happened and started leaving. then the house lights came up and the actors left the stage. they first told people in the left orch to leave, and a bit later they then evacuated the whole theater. we were waiting outside for a while and like 5 ambulances and firetrucks came and the entire theater was on the street. about like 45 mins of us waiting they said they would continue the show, but then like another 30 mins later they eventually said it was cancelled.
So was the woman on her phone and pepper spray thing two separate incidents?
Like in my head, it sounds like someone used pepper spray on the woman using her phone. Or was it just that someone’s pepper spray accidentally went off?

they were not related at all. the phone call thing was far in the right orch and the pepper spray was all the way in the left orch, and i think the pepper spray was accidental bc it was randomly in the middle of a row. but idk
I must admit I’ve seen some bad audience behavior but actually TALKING on your phone during the show is new. That combined with the pepper spray at one performance is something else — has this show been having an unusual number of incidents in the audience, or was today just a fluke?

It depends on the canister, but the only fool proof way to "accidentally" trigger a can would be for the canister itself to be punctured - either on purpose with a metal implement, or by it being stepped or pressed on and cracked open. My money is on it having been in someone's bag, and it being crushed. If it is was from a key fob it's a different set of variables though.

It's always scary to hear of a theatre being evacuated; I was at Hamilton when the whole "Times Square Scare" happened (a motorcycle backfired and people thought it was gunshots). It's horrifying when people are running out of the theatre and they have to stop the show and you have to duck down behind your seats because people think a shooter is in the theatre.
But that's just today's society: we fear loud popping noises and women only feel safe in New York City when they're carrying pepper spray when they are in New York City. My friend debated carrying pepper spray to a show with her and decided against it. It's pretty sad and I wish things were different.
