Re: JUST IN TIME 5.0 - Nicholas Christopher

I still think the producers are shooting the show in the foot with this casting.

Time will tell.

The good news? Audra McDonald will take over the role when Nicholas Christopher leaves because Audra Can do anything.

A Russian chess player is not the same as a famous white musical star whose life story is being told. Would you cast somebody white to play Michael Jackson in MJ? Color blind casting works in many roles but playing somebody famous in their life story may not be the best idea. no matter how talented they are. I agree with other posters, this show will close by January.

If it closes it won't be because he's black it will be because he's not famous enough (which isn't a reflection on his talent). Again, this show has a framing device that MJ does not. MJ attracts people who want to pretend they are watching a dead performer they can no longer see. Just In Time reminds you that you aren't watching the real Bobby Darrin.

Extremely talented, yes. A Broadway name is even a stretch. The average theatergoer has no clue who he is.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

So - some of you have a problem with a man of color playing Bobby Darin but zero objections with the possibility of Jinx Monsoon as Miss Hannigan in Annie or Alex Newell as Effie White in Dreamgirls.

Got it.

Oh my God. Just lock the thread if this is the level of discourse we will be getting. Some of y'all are showing y'all's whole ass.

Yo, you are aware that those are fictional characters, right? Bobby Darin was an actual person who existed. There's a big difference. There's a lot more freedom in terms of casting when it comes to a fictional character then someone playing an actual person. Your comparison is kind of silly.

The casting to me at first seemed very left field, but he may knock it out the park. Only time will tell

VERY talented and deserves all the acclaim. He is not a ticket-selling name. That's just a fact. Whitney Levitt will probably make up for some of that.

That said, "The Broadway Psychic"'s take is absurd.

Again: this a show built on the conceit that we are watching a performer put on the role of Bobby Darin. It is not and never has been about somebody resembling or impersonating the actual Darin. This is like complaining about the casting in Oh Mary.

Race is not a significant theme of Just In Time, so the race of the actor playing Bobby Darin doesn't matter.

I haven't seen MJ, but the nature of our culture is such that race will pretty much always be a significant theme when the subject is a famous person of color, whether the material makes that explicit or not.

Yo, I'm aware they are fictional characters...fictional women characters. Jinx Monsoon and Alex Newell are not women.

Jinkx Monsoon is trans-femme.

While I agree with this comparison, I have a hard time trusting the average audience for Just in Time to get this before going into the show.
