this show should've closed with Groff. It's painful to say but very evident when comparing my two different experiences with this show.
the real strong suit overall of the show was groff and the way that he beautifully embedded it with significance by connecting it to his love of performing. you could feel his need for performing behind every step he took. as someone who relates to that sentiment and has never cared about bobby darin, that raw emotion was what connected me to the show and made me enjoy that night. not to mention his just overall unmatched showmanship.
with jordan, this felt like one of the longest shows I've ever seen. his like crooner impression will likely be tightened up over time, but I didn't love it. and he danced much better than I thought he would, but it still felt like I was watching someone's dad attempt to dance. but most importantly, i didn't feel he conveyed the message with enough passion.
I now understand all of the mixed reviews about the book, because WHEW, any moment without a big number drags severely. everyone in the cast though is still phenomenal and I don't want them to be put out of work so I still hope this runs for a while because it still is a fun night which appeals to a wide audience, young and old."
Just got home and agree with most of this. Jeremy’s dancing is better than expected, but there’s something about Groff that makes you believe that he LIVED for the stage and the audience connection. Jordan lives for his family, not for the stage, so I don’t believe when he tries to sell that concept at the end. Maybe that’s me judging their personal lives, but the opening sets us up to do that. I thought Jeremy would be able to sell “crooner” better than he did, but I don’t think his voice, while probably the best voice on Broadway, is actually suited for this.
Isa is the best Connie the show has had, so she stole the night for me. She looks like her, sounds fantastic and gave great highs and lows to her acting. Carrie was another good Sandra. They’ve all been good. Pretty sure there was an understudy for Polly because there was still a slip in the playbill which I appreciated after seeing two shows that didn’t do the same when having understudies.
I do think the show will go on without Groff because it already is, but I don’t know for how long. We shall see.
