Yes she did look good. **sniff Peanut butter and jelly?
My girl, Fantasia, sounded excellent! Anybody know the name of the song she sang? Heather and Fantasia stole the show.

Heather Hedley, Audra McDonald, Renee Fleming, Yitzhak Perlman, and Kid Rock. Which of these is not like the other? Anyway, I did find some of the stiffer audience members' attempts to dance to "Saturday Night" pretty darn funny.
I think she sang "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", TheTruth.
MrRoxy- relax. I wasn't yelling at you or anything, just pointing out that what you said wasn't really nice and came across as bigoted.
Heather sang? BLAST MY SHORT ATTENTION SPAN AND LOVE OF COSBY REPEATS!
Heather sang "Your Song"...I could probably go my whole life without hearing that song again, but it really was a beautiful performance.
Fantasia sang "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word," which is one of Elton's most covered songs. Ray Charles did it on his current album too. I really enjoyed this show - so much music, most of it very well done. And as an Elton fan, I loved, loved, loved that Robert Downey Jr gave such a heartfelt tribute while still being able to make comments that alluded to Elton's sexuality, that so much of Elton's music was played, that so many of the performers so obviously loved him, and that they saved the best for last.
ETA: I took too long to write this that I missed someone else answering the question first.

Not to nitpick (not HERE!)...but Renee doing "..Rainbow" to Warren? I don't get it. The director of REDS and star of SHAMPOO and BONNE AND CLYDE ... getting an opera diva to sing a Judy Garland song?
And Heather didn't seem used to particularly good advantage last night. "Your Song," seemed so untaxing, and there were stretches when the melody all but evaporated.
I personally found the Williams tribute the most moving. His themes are anthemic, and conjure up memories for most of the world.
Bush looked like he was irritated that he had to be there every time they turned the camera to him. (I only got to watch part of the show.) He didn't even laugh at the "As American as President Bush's mother" comment. I bet he wished he could have been elsewhere that evening. Probably uncomfortable having to sit near Elton John in cse the religious right was watching.

I dunno if he was uncomfortable so much as bored. I wonder how many of the performers he'd actually heard of before, other than the Marine band.

Heather Headley proved (again) why she is a star. Sure, she got a litlle pitchy, but she felt every moment, so we forgive her quite readily.
Now...did anyone else find Perlman's Schindler's List theme a little painful to listen to -- screetchy?
It was nice to hear the Sondheim theme in the Beatty tribute (music from REDS.) I had forgotten how beautiful it is. And Annette Benning looked so proud and happy, she is so classy.
Mr Roxy,
Remeber what happens when one gets defensive. Your comment came out a little offensive. You probaly did not mean it that way. Why not just explain yourslef instead of just getting defensive? I mean you were trying to say something otherwise you wouldn't have posted. Peace.
I thought the whole thing was classy and well thought out. It's so difficult at these things creating appropriate tributes to the acting couples like Davis and Dee, but the emotion was lovely and Audra McDonald is a singing Goddess!
As for Bush - I'm wondering how many people in his box (or in the room, for that matter) actually campaigned against him the recent election - I'd be a bit uncomfortable, too.
Jack Nicholson introduced Renee Fleming as a favorite of Warren Beatty's - clearly that's why she was there. And since there are really no Warren Beatty songs (other than Dick Tracy) I'm thinking they took the classic Hollywood anthem about dreams and applied it to the classic Hollywood "kid" whose made his own dreams come true.
After the taping, much was written about Downey's tribute to Sir Elton, calling it rambling, in bad taste and possibly offensive. I would disagree and have to echo earlier posts - this was one friend paying tribute to another and it is only important that Sir Elton understands fully all that is said in that moment. I was particularly pleased that a newcomer like Fantasia proved she can hold her own with such elite company - good for her.
I'm curious to see if there is any follow-up by the FCC due to potential complaints stemming from the violence of the Bonnie and Clyde excerpt or the lyrics to Bitch is Back. They are currently investigating the NBC coverage of the Olympic Opening Ceremony (some of those greek statue people had penises and breasts, you know!). I wouldn't be surprised, but I would be insensed.

The only rambling tribute I saw was Jack Nicholson's to Warren Beatty. It wasn't that bad, but I can't believe people latched onto Downey Jr. after seeing that.
ETA- I was also really startled by the Bonnie and Clyde clip, especially because I've never seen the movie. And all I could hear during "The Bitch is Back" is Eric Idle's FCC song.

I mentioned this on another thread, and I hate to have to say it again. What is the big deal about Heather Headly? I've seen her perform somewhere else, off key and straining, and it seemed to be again last night. She was way off. I know people have off nights, but this is the third song I've heard her sing live, at three different times, and they were all bad. Everyone jumps on the band wagon when Eden or Idina or someone else really popular messes up, but no one ever seems to point out Heather's awful performances. I also enjoy the veins in her neck. Someone said somewhere how awful Idina is because you can see the vein's in her neck when she sings. Well, if that is true, I guess you could throw Ms. Headly into that group, because those veins were bulging, but nothing worth while was coming out. Just my two cents about that. I'm really sad I missed Audra, I love her. Renee sounded lovely, but I wish she would have sang a different song. Fantasia didn't annoy me too much.

I performed with the choir that sang with Audra McDonald in the segment honoring Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis. I will say that half of the song was edited out!!! It's amazing how much was cut in terms of the overall production. Still, it was an amazing experience to be there.
Congratulations on your participation! What a kick that must have been . . .
What else was edited out of the televised version?
In our segment, Brian Stokes Mitchell said more than what was actually broadcast. There was also a member of the Howard University Choir who spoke before we sang and they only kept about a sentence of what she said.
I believe Robert Downey Jr. sang in the Elton John segment, but his song was cut in the final broadcast.
The finale did not appear at all.
The editing was kind of sporatic in some places (people cut off mid-sentence, etc.). I realize they put this together in the two weeks since our actual performance, but I'm wondering if anyone watched the final edition!!
I watched it. It is great!
Especially to watch Brian Stokes Mitchell and Audra McDonald there. My all time favorite actor and actress. I also love Thomas Hampson's duet. He is one of my favorite opera baritone and his many musical albums are my favorite too.
Thank you to remind me this, son of a gun.

OrdinaryJukebox- I wasn't blown away by Headley, but I wouldn't put her in the Idina Menzel screecher category. Just my two cents. :)
Well, I wouldn't put Heather and Idina in the same category either...Idina's more my taste, Heather may be more yours...agree to disagree

You people crack me up! Tony winners, Oscar winners - even artists with decades long careers - and you're going to sit in judgement sitting at your computer screen. Amazing! Pathetic, vomit-inducing and narcissistic in the extreme - but it cracks me up none-the-less.
