God, I love this woman! She did unbelivabley well after such a scare! I adore her voice anyone and this is the best I've heard her sing DG since one of her first..
Also, it really does sound like Dianne screams 'Kerry!' though it's very hard to tell..
"I trained as a classical actor at Juilliard. I jump at the opportunity to do classical text...But I never in a million years guessed I'd get to play Juliet!"- Michael Arden
Music, you better be joking, that's all I can say...
So I listened to it again, and I actually realized she's rushing the song quite a bit. maybe it's a little hard to tell with the orchestra so quiet, but listen again and see if you can tell what I'm talking about...
From what I gather, it is Kerry's new "signature" to hold that last note for quite a while. Cassidy Jansen (sp?) follows Kerry's lead, and I believe the other day, Cassidy held the note for almost 11 seconds. I hope she brings it to Broadway.
It is strange how completely fascinating this incident is.
As interesting as the whole problem with the lift is, I love that the part of the recording I keep listening to again and again is the ending, not the whole scream/mishap part. That's a good sign for the performer--normally I'm more obsessed with disaster than things going well.
"I just want a story and a few good songs that will take me away. I just want to be entertained. I mean, isn't that the point?"
I wonder what the conductor/chorus say about this... Hahaha Kerry is lucky she can do that because she actually cues the conductor for the cut-off with the broom hit...
From the different versions I've heard, this appears to be what most likely happened, taking the common denominators:
Kerry goes to the lift, either accidentally pushed the back button (which securely clamps her in for take off) or she got tangled causing her to move forwards to try and get herself back into position.
The clamp grabs her in an awkward position as it begins to rise. A few people have said that she was clamped sideways, so half of her body was off the platform.
Kerry shouts 'NO STOP' or words to that effect, Dianne screams 'ELPHIE!' probably not 100% on whats going on, Kerry then continues to shout out 'IT'S THE LIFT'. However, the music continues and people seem to be slow on realizing that she's now out of character.
She throws down the broomstick after looking frantically around, obviously this gets the attention...everyone stops singing, the music stops, the curtain drops.
There's an apology announcement, minutes if not seconds later, there's an announcement that Wicked can continue...which it does, with Kerry standing at the front of the stage with the Ozians crouched around her. She then NAILS it, as we all know.
The edrenoline she has is overwhelming, you can hear her all shaken up...yet she's so energetic and, for lack of a better word, FIERCE. Snaps for Kerry, she has balls!
I dunno what you guys are listening to. All I hear is her scream and say stop, and then maybe "Eeeee!". I don't hear "stop it", "it's the lift" or a broom falling to the stage.
she's incredible, to be able to sing like that right after such a scare? and she's afraid of heights too, which makes it that much worse. but she comes back and kicks serious ass. and there were some people laughing when the whole thing stopped, that just ticked me off. i mean, come one, someone almost gets hurt on stage and all you do is laugh? for heaven's sake, show some sense.
Kerry hit the button while stepping on the platform and it closed around her causing her to rise early (the computer off stage left sends a signal to fly one the safety closes.) Being that Elphaba isn't visible during this part she rose without people being able to do anything... the rest is audible.
Also, it was a 20 minute break. The person who recorded the audio edited down.
It might have been taken off so many times because Kerry didn't appreciate it being on there and she 'youtubes' herself as many performers do and saw it, and reported it.
