Uncage: yes they do show it!!
Frankly, when I saw the show during previews, that was my favorite part of the performance. I was left ever so slightly cold by the production. Felt like a museum piece behind glass walls to me. A perfect work of art without any connection.
I still think it's great. It is South Pacific after all, and I"m definitely enjoying the broadcast so far.

Whether live or on TV, Loretta Ables Sayre is the best part of this near-perfect production. So glad this is being recorded.

Amen.
And I'm loving seeing shirtless Danny Burstein in HD.
musik, it was my first time seeing it onstage and I loved every minute of it!
I third that Loretta Ables Sayre is the best thing about this production.
And I never noticed Danny Burstein closed his eyes so much when he sang.
Is this the original Commander Brackett? I think I saw him and his replacement...

Yes, Skipp opened the show.
I love Samonsky's voice.
I did this show in high school, and I don't ever remember those lines about Princeton and Rutgers Universities as being part of the script. Were they inserted into the revival because MY GIRL BACK HOME is in it?
The only complaint I have is that I think you lose the depth of the stage on TV. Two of my favorite moments in the theatre were when the Seabees made their entrance over the sand dunes singing "Bloody Mary" and that last moment in "A Wonderful Guy" when Nellie and the other nurses made their exit over the sand dunes. It's a shame it was lost on TV.

^So true. My other complaint is that this broadcast has Andrew Samonsky. He's serviceable...I guess.
He's actually less offensive in his book scenes than I remembered. His singing voice is gorgeous though.
Samonsky has a good voice, but his acting is far less than serviceable- it's atrocious.

His vocals really are better than Morrison's were in the role. His acting might be "serviceable" - but that voice is glorious.
Did anyone else lose sound?

IF anyone is interested, PM me for info on dvd copies of the show. I am recording it tonight in HD on DVDR! Thanks....

I actually think his voice is just as bad as his acting. It's grating. I also didn't think Morrison was anything special in the role either, so maybe I'm just hard to please.
Alan Alda just said that when he first heard the overture of this production he started "bawling". That is exactly what happened to me the first time I saw this production.
ETA: Mary Rodgers just said that people tell her that the cried all through the show. Haha, exactly what happened to me lol.
That's always a problem with these microphones - the sound is too "piped in." You don't get the great acoustics of the Vivian Beaumont, not to mention the great scenery as another poster mentioned above. But Paulo Szot still kills the reprise of SEE at the end of Act I as always. Love it.
Samonsky is vocally superior to Morrison, but his speaking voice does sound a tad affected. Or something. Can't pinpoint exactly what is "off" about his line delivery.

I agree with everyone on Andrew Samonsky. What a gorgeous voice!! Better than Matthew Morrison's in this role. His acting....what is up with that laugh?!? It sounds so creepy!! I thought his acting was terrible at the beginning. It is getting better as the show goes on.

Ok, it's good so far! This is my first time seeing it (I've seen bits and pieces of the movie). Here are some questions/comments:
1. WOW to Nellie's "colored" comment. She's her mother's daughter.
2. Um, is Bloody Mary pimping out her daughter? Haha.
I think the thing with Andrew is that you notice his odd stage voice when he first makes his entrance but as the show moves on and you get wrapped up in it you just stop noticing. That's what happened with me anyway. It gets absorbed by the beauty of this production as a whole.

I actually felt that way when I first saw him, Eris. It's probably more noticeable now because it's a repeat viewing and because I'm not as immersed as I was in person.
Are they going to talk over the Entr'Acte? It's so amazing when they stand up!
I have not heard or seen anything related to the show, and I am very impressed and wonder why I didn't get interested in this earlier! I need a cast recording of this!!
(PS How is/was "The Light In The Piazza"? Even if I wanted a cast recording of it. Is the DVD available of the airing?)
