But it's fun to judge a show prior to knowing a single thing about it, not to mention judging a person based on what you've read. I'm not a judge and I'm not a jury - I have no idea if the allegations are real or not real. I have no idea if this will be a good or bad how - these kinds of things are not really my cup of tea, although I did enjoy Beautiful.
But part of me hopes that it's a hit - just to watch the exploding heads right here on this message board."
Didn’t you have repeated conniptions over the period details in Fosse/Verdon?

I’m hearing rumors from a few people that I know that this show has one female role (at least with spoken dialogue) and that a certain Broadway actress with two flops under her belt will be playing her. I’m not sure of the validity of this but with her track record, I’m even less excited for this show

I haven't really detected outrage in this thread; it's more like puzzlement and distaste. To my eyes, the posts critical of the production are less aggressive than this counter-reaction.

Thriller Live has run in London for over a decade, closing only because they need to refurbish the theatre, Do I agree that show or MJ should be running? Not my call. But like it or not, many of his fans are still sticking by him and like Thriller Live and Michael Jackson One, MJ will have legs on Broadway.
(Personally, I think the only show called MJ should be MJ Rodriguez' one-woman show "MJ!"![]()

I agree. I think Michael Jackson bio musical would have been better if done ten years ago (or before that documentary came out.) Nowadays when my friends and I hear of MJ, we think of MJ Rodriguez!!!

I have no faith in the Jackson estate. They are still peddling the myth of the Jackson 5 performing happily and Berry Gordy being this amazeballs producer who made their dreams come true.
I think an interesting musical could be made using what Michael himself said about his extremely lonely childhood, where he was pushed to constantly perform and abused by his dad. How like many child stars he became hooked on uppers and downers as a kid and could never really kick the habit.
Now that would be an interesting musical. But as I said, if the Jackson estate is involved it's going to be a total whitewash.

If the earlier workshop was any indication, you’re going to find this musical interesting.

I’m assuming as Michael’s mother? It’s basically an ensemble track, but I’m happy to see Sasha Allen back on Broadway either way.

Sasha (playing Katherine) will be in the show til March. She’s also expecting her third child.

Does that part get a lot of singing? I'm not a MJ fan, but I do love me some Sasha Allen.

From what I recall, Katherine has a duet with Michael and then she comes back at the end for an ensemble number.

My assumption about this release is that the estate is starting to drum up interest with the new biopic coming later this fall.

This made me incredibly sad. Sigh. Miss you, Gavin.
This musical is awesome, what an incredible success story.

Every time I've walked down 52nd Street to see Cabaret, I've been like, "Oh yeah, I forgot MJ is still a thing."

I imagine this movie will run into a lot of the same problems as MJ in terms of placating the estate by avoiding anything that makes Michael look too bad, especially considering they had to reshoot the entire third act because of legal issues regarding its portrayal of the abuse allegations.
But at least this one looks like it'll have more substantial supporting players to give the movie more life. Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson looks like he's going to be a highlight.

Colman Domingo is coming for his Oscar nomination. I heard him channeling some of his “Mister” (from TCP) in there and gave me a little chill.
The movie, much like the musical, definitely looks like it’s polished within an inch of its life. It’s really exhausting how much has gone into sanitizing the last 15 years of his life to the point of erasure. At least on Broadway right now, Matté Martinez is giving a very lived-in and emotionally mature performance and not just filling an avatar like his predecessors .
