munkustrap, not everybody likes CATS, Gypsy, Rent, or any other shows you happen to enjoy. If you don't like Wicked, or the fans, get over it. Just don't post. Your retaliations to the Wicked threads were somewhat humorous once upon a time, but please, stop acting immature.
As for the most beautiful Elphaba, I happen to think Idina takes a very good picture in green. Not to say that the other Elphaba's aren't beautiful, and not to question any actress' ability to play the role, but some of the onstage shots of Idina as Elphaba are just breathtaking.

I read the book many years ago, and saw the musical when it opened - but in my recollection - isn't Elphaba supposed to be pretty ugly?
No - she's beautiful, "in her way". Not ugly, just green. Different. Lookswise, I think Julia Murney 'works' the best - the green makes her appear very stark and angular in act 1, and it's not until she has her hair down and that flower in it, and is smiling, that you realise she IS pretty. You just weren't allowed to see it before.
Then in act 2 when she's all glammed up and witchy, she's sexy as ****.

In response to the earlier comment about Elphaba being ugly...
If I remember correctly, I believe one of the producers of the musical said in an interview that they didn't want Elphaba to be hated because she was ugly, but because she was different.

Kerry Ellis is gorgeous!
Brandi is FUGLY!
Idina, Eden, and Victoria are also very beautiful!
Sho and Julia are not pretty, but Do look very witchy!
Maria, Steph, Kristy, Dee are all about equal in my books.

this is my point right here. to say people are "not pretty", this is the whole problem. I hope you are perfectly beautiful yourself to make such a statement, but actually it wouldn't matter. Actors and actresses already put their souls up there to be judged and reviewed. Having some pre-teens judge who is the "prettiest" like it is Prom Queen Voting all over again doesn't make much sense. I don't know any of these actresses, i just think this thread is utter nonsense.
and whoever said "anger management" concerning my post; If you are an actor I can't wait until you get up on a stage and someone does a thread, "ugliest sweeney" and you are on the top of the list. how would that feel? exactly.
and I am angered by this thread. it's shallow and disgusting.

I was avoiding this thread when I saw the subject, I mean do we really need another Wicked thread. But my curiosity got the best of me and I opened it.
Two things are very obvious, one is that the person who started this thread must have seen every Elphaba ever to perform in Wicked, which would mean that he/she has seen the show too many times to count.
But the other and more obvious thing is that this person STILL has yet to grasp one of the major themes of Wicked, that it really doesn't matter what you look like on the OUTSIDE, it is what is INSIDE that makes a person who they are, good or wicked.
Maybe you should see the show just ONE MORE TIME and listen to what it is saying instead of getting caught up in all the "pretty". Grow the hell up.

oops, looks like I caught the bad BWW virus but please... the title of your thread is "Many Threads on Elphaba but...", I was at least expecting something interesting about the character for once and what do we get? Who's the prettiest? right... because being pretty is what the show is all about. Forget the segregation, moral ethics questions, the political struggle and social rejection, what's outside is all that matters!
If anything, your post makes me reflect on how wrong they were to make such a gorgeous green makeup for Elphaba, especially for Idina who has such a striking bone structure. If she'd been ugly like she was supposed to, maybe the show would have retained some of its dignity after a year or so... or maybe not.
sorry about that, I promise I'll keep steering clear of the Wicked thread as I have in the past. I don't know why I thought this one was going to be interesting.
