ONCE UPON A MATTRESS is a great choice for a high school to do. I did that show when I was a junior and we all just had the best time doing it! The great thing about doing it in a school is that there are so many parts to fill, so nobody feels left out.

Just please, for the sake of all that is good and holy in the theatre - DO NOT perform OKLAHOMA.

Fame.
We did that when I was in grade 11 and messed it up huge.
But if you have good directors you'll be fine re: Musicals for H.S

Footloose. I saw a summer theater production of it done by mainly teenagers. Although it hasn't been my most favorite show, that might appeal to a younger teen audience in general. You probably don't have to go crazy with costumes nor scenery. Grease might be another good one too.

Matt_G, why not Oklahoma?

Pippin could work. When I did it years ago in high school we had a female Leading Player. I've seen it done both ways many times, and I think that role can work either sex.

Millie, OKLAHOMA is the most overdone high school musical EVER done.

Well, if you have the right type of voices I believe Aida has been released on MTI...

Gypsy? I've seen hs tame it down a bit. Rose, Louise, Herbie 3 main leads - supproting June and Tulsa.
Also Annie get your Gun would be good. Annie, Frank, Dolly, supproting Tommy and Winnie

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

Overdone, but West Side Story

Our high school tries to pick things that haven't been done in the school system anytime before, so the last two years, they have done Once Upon a Mattress and Man of La Mancha. Both were great.

Copacabana, AGYG (The revival version), Footloose, WRF... would a high school really be able to do Gypsy because of some of the language and the stripping?

And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...

gypsy would be amazing, i wish my school would do it. the stripping element would pose a problem but the dancers at my school have had some pretty skimpy costumes in the past. but i think stripping is one of those things that can be tamed down and people will still get the idea of what they are doing. it all depends on how far the director wants to go, i suppose.

You should do BIG! It's great for schools. Two female leads: Susan, Mrs. Baskin. One male lead: Josh. C'est parfait, non?

I dont think the strippers in Gyspy are that big of a problem. They dont get naked at all, and you can control how skimpy their costumes are.

And some great miscellaneous roles, as well.
