There must have been a moment in some story conference where someone (Rebeck, presumably) said, "And then, the morning after the disastrous preview, they'll all go to a church and we'll have a gospel number that will start with all the African-American chorus boy and all the African-American congregants...and end up with Katherine McPhee out-singing them all! Won't that be terrific?"

Posted: 5/9/12 at 2:57pmOh, hell, they should've just done Queen's "Somebody to Love" and been done with it. We wouldn't really quibble over the veracity of such a thing in the "SMASH" universe.

"That's what I was wondering. I'm not sure there is an alternative."
They could have done "Waiting for the Light" or "How Blest We Are" from Big River.
In addition, there are hundreds of old hymns that are no longer under copyright that could have been dusted off, reorchestrated and used.
Using that song, which isn't even one of Donnie McClurkin's better songs, was just pure laziness.

Stand has been around at least since 2002.
And by the way, I don't know when Smash filmed, but Donnie sang Stand at Whitney Houston's funeral.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 4:23pmSo I just watched the sneak peak with Nick Jonas and Angelica and they hint towards Ivy as Marilyn. Also after viewing Hilty as Lorelei in the "Diamonds" clip I am daily certain it is Hilty in the shadowed picture.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 4:28pmWhat if she does "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and pulls out DEV'S DIAMOND!?

Well that clip they just posted with Joe Jonas totally reveals who put the peanuts in the smoothie. Not that its a real surprise, but kind of a joy-kill.
I think Karen will end up taking Marilyn at the 11th hour.

I think they'll decide Karen is too green (as she's been all along) and that Ivy knows the role better and then something will happen and Karen goes on at the 11th hour.
I hope the something that happens is that Karen snaps and ties Ivy to the traintrack after finding out about her affair with Dev. I've been waiting for Karen to do something remotely interesting all season.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 4:56pmWell we know that is she does what you wish it will still be with that glazed-over-dead-smug faced look.

Namo,
I'll only go with that Diamonds routine if she pops it out of her cooch, all Miss Saigon-like.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 5:09pmWe all know the best psychopaths have that dead glazed over look in their eye, so I'm waiting for SMASH to throw us that plot point that has all along justified McPhee's casting.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 5:24pmSince I don't watch Idol, I've never actually seen McPhee before this show and...I like her. I have a much bigger problem with the writing for her character than I do with her acting.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 5:49pmMichael Bennett's speculation is exactly what I see happening. They still haven't shown the scene from previews where we hear someone say "She's not breathing". People assumed it was for Uma's character but it isn't. I'll speculate it's going to be Ivy popping pills again which will lead to the casting of Karen. Didn't I read that Bernadette Peters was returning like Jonas for the final episode?

#1916Smash - Series Discussion
Posted: 5/9/12 at 8:27pmnot with ratings that dropped to an all time low this week: 5.720 million
#1917Smash - Series Discussion
Posted: 5/9/12 at 8:54pmHopefully they'll get a bump next week, if I'm correct they will be following the premiere of AGT.

"not with ratings that dropped to an all time low this week: 5.720 million"
Tech was even lower, at 5.34 million.
And to think that it premiered at 11 million.

It's a TV show -- it should not perform at the Tonys. (IMHO)
....wait....is Smash on the same channel as the Tonys? If not, there is no way in hell that it will.

5.7 is still pretty good... for NBC.
I hope next season is ALL about Bombshell's amazing story leading to their Tonys! Would be brilliant.

Posted: 5/9/12 at 10:30pmI've said it before, I'll say it again. I think we've seen from Spiderman and their backstage drama that the possible story lines are endless.
