Smash - Series Discussion

Well looks like we have our Marilyn, and new ending.

I think it's Hilty (despite that song). They have released to much that points to McPhee so I can see NBC having a "twist". So it looks like its McPhee then BAM it's not.

I think us Hilty fans need to get over the fact that it will be Karen. It is most likely Ivy up until a certain point like mentioned earlier in the thread. My guess is that Bernadette Peters comes in and screws it up. Megan Hilty is singing Rose's Turn tonight.

It wouldn't surprise me if they end up both playing the part. Like Karen plays Norma Jeane and Ivy plays Marilyn. What works in "Smash" is when the focus on the backstage stage issues and the show itself. What was hurting was the other plot lines and some characters (Leo/Ellis).

The thinking is the new show runner can make those other plot lines interesting while he relies on other writers and the actors input on the backstage stories to find a balance. The clunker episodes were written by the current/former show runner and they were just bad and stopped any forward momentum the show had.

There's a good show in what "Smash" is it's just getting the right people to form it.

The thinking by whom? From where does this information come?

Keep in mind, while Rebeck's scripts were some of the worst, I was kinda surprised to see (though I knbow nothing of her plays), as showrunner she deserves credit/blame for the better episodes as well as the bad as she essentially charts out exactly what story beats are handled in each episode and (though only some showrunners really do this) in theory she can do an uncredited final edit on every script as well. Still, even with this guy seemingly only having Gossip Girl experience, obviously a new showrunner was one of the things that needed changing. I wonder if Rebeck would have done better at Showtime where the show would have had no real interference from the network execs.

Don't you love how Angelica Huston holds the phone upside down like it's supposed to be that way....?

Wait, the new showrunner obviously needs changing? Why?

How on Earth does no one notice she is holding that phone upside down. It's one of the most recognizable phones in America! Hope can they let that slide? Other than that though, this episode is off to a great start.

Don't bother her about her phone placement. SHE NEEDS TO MAKE A PHONE CALL!

"To quote Julie Houston, it just started"…right, but a couple of weeks ago we all ran here to praise the opening.

Are these scenes improvised? So much energy is dispersed on this show.
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

I loved it.

Do the writers just hate Ivy?

That was so unsatisfying.

That was... underwhelming.

I would lament further but I NEED TO MAKE A PHONE CALL.

I didn't hate it. But I felt the ending was jarring - especially since the show is gone until mid-season (presumably)
