AWFUL. He was AWFUL. I swear to God, if I had to hear him mention that damn briefcase one more time... And poor Octavia had to tolerate him for 4 hours until he finally opened it to absolutely no payoff. A 4 hour joke with no punchline. He needs to go far far away for a very long time.
In his defense, hosting the Tonys is a different animal. It is not a big unwieldy mess like the Oscars but a tightly knit machine. It has plenty of talented performers performing and not giving long winded speeches. He did not have a prayer last night. He will be happy to never have to do it again.
The briefcase bit was beyond lame. Whoever dreamed it up needs to be staked on an anthill in the broiling sun with honey smeared over his body so he dies a long painful death much like the painful death we all endured watching it.
I found most of the evening, but especially NPH, pretty damn boring.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I liked NPH, although I didn't get the underwear stuff (not having seen Birdman yet). I thought his off-the-cuff stuff was clever. He sings well, he's charming, and he's not filthy. (Remember the ridiculous "I Saw Your Boobs" two years ago?)
I thought the worst part of the evening was Sean Penn's outrageous joke about restricting green cards. If I picked up the reference correctly, he was saying that Innaratu (or whatever his name is) shouldn't be allowed to stay in the U.S. because he's taking so many awards. I don't think immigration jokes about Mexicans are kosher in this anti-immigrant climate.
Audrey, the Phantom Phanatic, who nonetheless would rather be Jean Valjean, who knew how to make lemonade out of lemons.
Penn made a satirical joke about the state of the immigration policy in America and Iñárritu was in on the joke, commenting on it himself. NPH was just fine, although he might have rethought the lead writer's credit in consideration of some of the lamer material.
Being left wing like Penn doesn't give someone license to make a stupid remark. Hopes were high for NPH...but the producers and writers need be horsewhippped.
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
