Calling that gatekeeping doesn’t expose anything. It just dodges what they said."

Again, we can't dodge anything when nothing has been said.

In what way did he treat them inappropriately? I don't need to see their accounts. I need to know in what way he was inappropriate to react in any way. What's being discussed isn't any allegations; it'sthat we don't know what the allegations are, because you're the only one who seems to know.

Many posters on this board treat people what I consider inappropriate ways. That doesn't mean it's assault.

From your other post: "Women went to him privately and said Ben Davis assaulted or treated them inappropriately."

Which is it? Assaulted them or treated them inappropriately? Both? Some experienced one and others experienced the other?

So far you've alleged even more than the oracle person has, and you haven't even specific about what you're alleging.
"

Boy, you sure did slip into the posture of a man protecting someone who hurts women, minimizing what they told you and acting like the only thing that mattered was whether you could twist the framing enough to make their experience smaller. That’s the creepiest attempt at gaslighting I’ve ever seen.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

Look: the bottom line is that Sweaty has not accused Ben Davis of doing anything other than dating younger women and…being a sh*tty boyfriend or something? He vaguely insinuates terrible dealings, but has no receipts and no specific accusations. The posters here jumping to conclusions (i.e. that assault was involved, which SO never even said) are just bringing false credibility to a TikTok video made by a man living in his parents’ basement in New Jersey that appears to be irresponsible pseudo-journalism at best, and flat out libel at worst. SO needs to either find a way to back up these claims or hire a lawyer, because he is stepping away from “hot tea” and into much more dangerous waters here.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

Sweaty knows he has no story here, which is why his “revelations” are all smoke and mirrors. It’s fairly well known in the theater community that Ben Davis has dated younger women. Insinuating that consensual relationships with an age gap is on par with spousal abuse or transphobia is offensive and insulting to survivors.

He’s positioning himself lately as a kind of social justice crusader for the theater community because he believes it gives him more credibility than simply being a gossip monger. And in a way, he’s right — people who used to dismiss him outright now seem to give him more credence. But don’t think for a second he’s doing any of this for anything other than self-interest, and as he’s showing here, he’s willing to use manipulation and untruths for his own gain.

I think one can hold, without contradiction, both that women should be believed by default when they say that they've been harmed, and that a second-hand report from this particular messenger is, by itself, not sufficient evidence to conclude that the actor in question is a predator. (Note that it's not a first-hand report, which would mean that we were hearing directly from a victim.)

Re: New Hadestown Casting

We hear much in the community - and Davis is not one that has ever hit my ears. In fact, he's been known as a gentleman - even if perhaps dating younger (his prerogative).

It's good Davis has replaced the previous person. Good for Hadestown - listening and making move for the best.

Maybe Lincoln Center will do the same. Move for the best and make leadership change, hopefully in time - prior to their fall production at the Beaumont going into rehearsal.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

It seems like HADESTOWN is moving to a model of turning over the principal cast every 6 months.

If a show can keep the same group largely intact for 4-6 months, it's a lot easier on the cast, the GMs, the SM's, everyone. It can become really tough on morale to have new put-ins every other week at shows like CHICAGO and LITTLE SHOP and HEATHERS, and even more so on shows that are reliant on a star to extend or stay open.

And I like how all five leads are replaced at the same time. Makes it easier to rehearse everyone, too.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

My thing with SO is that I don't believe he actually heard from anyone. He likely fabricated it all as he is wont to do. He is desperate to be involved and relevant and has outright lied multiple times, so of course people are questioning the veracity of the claims. Such a sad case of mental illness gone unchecked; it really is sad.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

I still remember seeing Norbert as Roger on a return visit to RENT in 2001 or something, simply an incredible singer and performer. Very excited that hes back singing on stage and love the very notion of his voice with Amber Iman's.

If anyone saw them tonight please share

Re: New Hadestown Casting

There's audio out there of the new cast. Everyone sounds amazing outside of Jasmin Savoy Brown. Norbert and Iman are incredible. Happy they're both back on Broadway.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

For their third performance, the show is in top-notch shape. Having seen the original cast (minus Andre), I was very impressed by these performances.

The most compelling reason for me to revisit was Norbert, and he delivers. Vocally, acting, he makes the role his own. Amber's voice was unbelievable and the chemistry with the rest of the cast is evident.

Few people can match Eva's vocal beauty, and Jasmin has a lovely voice, if not the strength and intensity of Eva. Acting was strong.

Having recently seen Ben Davis as "Father" in Ragtime, I suspected he would be well suited for the role of Hades. His take on the role is more vengeful than creepy, which I felt Patrick Page portrayed. I also prefered Ben's voice as a singer.

The biggest question mark for me going in was how Kayko would perform as Orpheus. (Reeve Carney was born to play this role, and it's hard to believe he wasn't Tony nominated.). The good news is Kayko is across the board strong, both vocally and acting-wise. Because of this, he was the biggest revelation.

I highly recommend seeing this show--and based on the audience response, it seems this cast will keep the show running and full.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

Saw the cast's first performance. Norbert, Amber, and Ben are the reason to see this cast. Norbert especially is just unbelievable.

Amber was a bit tentative but has such warmth and energy and obviously incredible pipes. Ben Davis was sexy, charming, and you sensed a real connection between Persephone and Hades. Their chemistry was excellent.

Kayko is charming and sweet, though, clearly not an actor. Still, you root for him and he is incredibly likable. Great voice.

Jasmin Savoy Brown is a misfire in every single way. Vocally not up to the task of the role and there is not an ounce of acting happening on that stage from her.

Re: New Hadestown Casting

theres some audio online and Norbert seems to be as incredible as everyone thought he would be. With enormous mounds of salt since I can only hear not see her, Amber sounds incredible but seems to be taking some strange liberties with riffs/tone that dont make alot of sense without being in the room. Unclear how in hell Jasmin Brown got this job. But its early!

Re: New Hadestown Casting

It was really nice to revisit this show. Norbert is perfection as always, he brings a certain energy to Hermes that is absolutely delicious. Ben is fantastic and scares me less than Patrick, which is a good thing. Amber has such a stunning voice and while tentative at first, she was all in for Act 2. Kayko is a pretty singer but he has no acting experience and it's very obvious on stage. He has no chemistry with Jasmin Savoy Brown, the most miscast of the bunch.

I know she is known for her tv work, but her bio is the longest one I have ever read. It's like she only took this job to just promote her television and film projects. Example: She joined alumni Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox in the latest installment which had the biggest opening weekend in franchise history at 63.6 million. Why does that need to be in a Playbill? Anyway, she cannot sing, has no chemistry with anyone, and her performance is not only not good, it's actively terrible. I don't understand how she was cast, but sometimes I question their casting department in general.

It's worth seeing for everyone else tho!

To each their own, by all means, but it seems pretty apparent from whats been leaked online that she is not singing along the likes of her predecessors. Maybe that will change as she eases into it but its a yikes so far.

Meanwhile Hadestown, in year six, has one of the top 5 highest avg ticket prices on Broadway. Truly remarkable.
