Tony is now returning Dec. 2. Cheyenne Jackson, Jenn Harris & John-Andrew will stay with the show through Jinkx' return.
bump.
So I've got two questions about this show, one I don't think has been asked and one I'm sure has been discussed, but I can't find it. For context, I've never seen the show and unfortunately live nowhere near New York, so am unlikely to.
1) Do you think the script reads funny? I was thinking of buying a copy (though the $40-odd price is a little steep) just so I could experience the show in some form, but I wonder if it's the delivery that creates the laughs more than the specific lines/plot developments.
2) Although people are praising Jane Krakowski and suggesting other women for the part, between it's orgins and it's double-meaning title it sounds so deeply indebted to queer sensibilities that I wonder if it becomes somewhat sanitized, or maybe safer is the better word (more of a conventional farce/like a long-form SNL skit) when a man or non-binary person isn't playing the lead?
Thanks for any feedback.

Buy it directly from Dramatists and it's a lot cheaper. And yes, it does read very funny.

And no, it does not change in context with a cis female playing the lead. It's the part itself that is a hoot and is just a queer in essence.

Agreed. It’s camp in its purest form and the say Cole was able to take a historical figure and carve out an otherwise gender neutral comedic role is nothing short of brilliant.
Whether man, woman, in between, or outside the box, the only real qualification for someone to play Mary is a comedic instinct that requires full commitment to the absurd. Anything less and it falls apart.
Oddly, Tituss Burgess actually was the only Mary I walked away from feeling very let down - only one joke of his landed a laugh with me, and that was during the “Do You Love Me?” scene practice, where he musically riffs on the line like the Contours song.
During the BCEFA speech, Jane said tonight was Tony’s first show back - I didn’t know he was coming back so that was fun. Show is as great as always but this was the quietest overall audience I’d ever experienced with “Oh Mary”. They weren’t a bad audience but just not the laughing-hysterically for 80 minutes people I’ve seen in the dozen or so times I’ve seen the show.
