Featured Actor and Actress are already looking like they will be stacked this year. Marla has an easy in to Leading, but between Cats, Rocky Horror, and Chess, Titanique would need some blockbuster casting to break in there.
I already think that Featured Actor is André de Shields’ to lose…
I wonder if having the Broadway credit gives them some more legitimacy for song rights. Marla has said on a podcast that since theaters don’t do ASCAP licenses, a lot of the Celine songs they originally planned for had to be replaced. “All Coming Back To Me Now” and “That’s The Way It Is” being a couple, since they are in “Bat out of Hell” and “& Juliet” respectively.
On the other hand, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I feel like we are underestimating Schimagdoon a little. I didn't see it in DC and I didn't watch the TV show, but it seems like a Spamalot type show that voters might be into.

Two beaches women will make a run for it. Not sure who makes the cut - Lost Boys as well.

If I remember correctly, DeSheilds literally just sits there for most of CATS.
What am I missing?

Beaches is coming in and announcing tomorrow (taking the Majestic instead of Purple Rain) so adjust accordingly...

He’s magical. That’s what you are missing
Why must it be 16 weeks only, more like Illinoise?

this feels like Tammy Faye
Started in a small theater of 300, absolutely crashed out when transferred to a 1600 seat theater
this is nothing but an awards play but if they were smart they only sell the front half of the orchestra before the overhang, and the front mezz and try to keep it intimate

If a some shows can't raise their money...will the theater owners get stuck writing checks for the shows they selected?

This does show the current health of Broadway and my prognosis is that it is in a very sick state with the cost of shows to run and the damage that Trump is doing to the economy.
5 yers ago you would’ve had big shows circling the St James hoping to get their shot, but with such small scale shows headed/heading to Broadway such as two strangers, mincemeat or that magic show in the Broadhurst, the Broadway topography looks bleak, but it is salvageable.

Other than moving from a small theater to a large one, these situations have nothing in common.
Tammy Faye had a 7-week run at the Almeida. Titanique ran for almost 3 years Off-Broadway and has played in London, Paris, Chicago, Montreal and Sydney. Tammy Faye Bakker has nowhere near the cultural relevancy of Celine Dion or Titanic.
If I had a nickel for every time a weird little off-Broadway jukebox musical about a luxury ship going down transfers to Broadway against all financial indicators, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it's happened twice. Anyway, welcome to the "we played Broadway" license marketing club, Titanique. I hope your limited engagement is joyful and worthwhile for everyone involved.

I doubt they will want more time before going out on tour. Illinoise was brilliant in all ways a show can be though, so it's a bit different. Can't wait to see the huge celebrities they put into this to make it sell because Marla Mindelle, despite her being incredibly funny and talented. won't be selling tons of tickets.
Yay!
Okay, will wait to see Chess again until March and then fly up to catch both. I can't wait!
The very thought of it coming to Broadway is ludicrus. But now that it's apparently a reality, I'm all in! They're guaranteed a Best Musical nomination, and can you imagine how fabulous they'll be on the Tonys?!

That kind of absurdist comedy is hard to pull off in one off production number. But I did love it down town. Wish they weren't doing this.

Is this just going to be a replica of the off broadway production or do we think they'll spruce it up a bit more? I know the Chicago production wasn't a direct replica.
Tickets for this were usually cheap Off-Broadway. It's foolish to think people will pay $100+ to see this.
Exactly. It was cheap and the showtimes were unique, that was the selling point for me. If they spend a lot of money on it and cast a celebrity, I guess it won't be a complete failure?
1710 seats. Eight times a week. Good luck tho.
Love Marla, but certainly wouldn't be opposed to a Nicole Parker "guest star" (if that's what we're calling it now) situation... just putting it out there!

Has Celine ever talked about this show publicly? I know she has been dealing with her health problems, so this may be the least of her worries. I can't imagine she would want this show licensed to regional groups or high schools at this point, as her career is not over yet, and I imagine she might have another tour in her eventually. I think she has a sense of humor about herself, so in general she would think the show is funny, as I did seeing it in the supermarket basement of its first venue. I don't even know if has any rights to her music, as she is not a song writer on most of the songs, so it may not even be her call, in regards to its future incarnations.

In a very thin year, Titanique is all but guaranteed to rack up Tony nominations, perhaps even disproportionately.
But I think its chance of winning more than a couple (Book, maybe a featured performance) are low, even in such a weak season. At the end of the day, it is a parody with a jukebox score, and I cannot really imagine Tony voters seeing it worthy of top prizes. But if Lost Boys totally whiffs it and Schmigadoon doesn't land well, perhaps Titanique vs. Two Strangers will be duking it out. But this is a year of major revivals and I imagine much of the awards love will be going to productions like Ragtime and Jellicle Ball.

Not looking forward to all the Titanic pun newspaper headlines if it sells poorly.
