Thrilled for all the LOVEMUSIK nominations. Kind of surprised that TALK RADIO got in over TRANSLATIONS - but then again, the folks that nominate MARY POPPINS for 11 Awards arent going to give jack to a phenomanal show like TRANSLATIONS. Hopefull the Tony & Drama Desks will be a bit different. But for the OCC I will say, I'm surprised that theyve made some decent choices.
Well, Monk is not in the Featured category, so that's a moot point. The point is, she acts rings around Brown.
"THE APPLE TREE in Best Revival, they lost all credibility right there."
Would you have preferred them to nominate Les Miz over Apple Tree? At least the latter had like 2 redeeming qualities, which cannot be said about Les SOOOOO Miserable. I agree though that Poppins shouldn't have been nominated for score or Brown. More than that, I am pissed that Jerry Mitchell got snubbed for choreography and Rob Ashford got nominated. I love them both as people, but the Curtains choreography is repetitive and boring.

I think that Mary Poppins is going to fair better this awards season than many people expect. The fact that this season has so many strong shows actually puts shows that are perceived as weaker in a better position to win awards based on the fact that the votes will be very divided when there is no single clear standout in certain catagories. Despite its tepid reviews, I still stand by my statement that Mary Poppins will win the best musical tony, with this adendum, if it gets nominated. If it gets nominated, I have a feeling that voting is going to be so split among other strong nominees that Poppins might squeak by. There are those on these boards who think I'm crazy, I could be. We shall see soon enough.

Yes. Ashley Brown.
Mary Poppins is a much more technically demanding role than Elle Woods (edit: or Carmen in Curtains, whatever category she should be considered in)--vocally and choreographically. I think they made a good choice. It won't be the most popular choice. But critics aren't out to make friends.
And Stephanie Block, bless her heart, is in a terrible show.
Also--the level of craft in the Curtains choreography is way beyond Legally Blonde's. I love Jerry Mitchell, but that's how it is.

"No nomination for Dancy? Thoughts?"
Not a surprise. That category went exactly as expected. Come Tony time, the nominations in that category will remain the same with Bill Nighy most likely taking the 5th spot for Vertical Hour.

Oh, Dancy, Dancy
They took no fancy
Them Critics is blind
And Outer their mind

Well said.
The same can be said for the lovely and talented Laura Bell Bundy and Christian Borle.

I hope it is nominated as well...I loved it both times I saw it in the end of 2006.
And what happened to Redgrave? Updated On: 4/23/07 at 01:00 PM

As expected by... ?
Personally, I am surprised... While I loved Liev, I think Dancy gives a much more powerful performance- If he was in the featured category, I would have chosen Dancy over Gaines.
MARY FREAKIN' POPPINS? What are they smoking?
I think Monk had a bigger part than Paice. She has 2 big solos in fantastic songs and I definately feel like I saw her more on stage than Paice.

My nom that I can't fathom:
Daniel Jenkins over John Gallagher, Jr.
Ok, dumb question...
Are these sort of like the Golden Globes of theatre awards?
In any case, I'm thrilled to see PQ recognized despite all the reviews.
Best of luck to all the nominees! :)

Me, too, Testing1232, and Dancy's performance is far more kinetic and layered than Langella's, who sings a johnny-one-note for much of the show (due to the underlying material) with a pinch of paranoia or regret.

I have to disagree with you Testing. I think they got that category right. Dancy was very good, but I found his performance a bit forced at times. I would have taken Sands or Gaines over him from that cast in the supporting category. But he was in no way weak. I just thought the others were stronger. He may have had the toughest role though.

WELL APPARENTLY THEY FREAKIN LIKED IT!
I would say the Drama Desk is more Golden Globes than Outer critics.
Expect the Tony nominations to look VERY different. The OCC and Drama Desk mix Broadway and Off-Broadway together. Also, as it has been said, GREY GARDENS was eligible last year, so there are TONS of variables when comparing this year's contenders for the OCC/Drama Desks to the upcoming Tonys.

The Golden Globes is a good comparison. Just like they're chosen by a tiny group of journalists (the Hollywood Foreign Press), the OOC only has about 85 members, many from out of town newspapers (though many are in fact in town, others are from Connecticut and Long Island -- they're a bunch of critics for small publications, columnists, radio hosts and an assorted motley crew on the fringes of the press corps -- this is their one moment in the sun, again sort of like the Hollywood Foreign Press).
Thanks, Margo and theaterdude.
I'm going to try my best to keep up with all the awards this season.... OCC, Drama Desk, Tonys.... am I missing any?

True, OCC also only noms four performers, not five. So adding people to those four categories will change things, too.
And as per my previous posts--I DO think Laura Bell Bundy is fantastic as Elle. The entire show just isn't at the level of Mary Poppins, where the only real problem is the book.
I just told somebody that MARY POPPINS got 11 nominations, and he said, "What? Did they nominate Gavin Lee four times?"
