With Grey Gardens elliglbe for neither the Outer Critics or Drama Desks, this will be an Avenue Q sort of year, because Grey Gardens is bound to take some prizes at the Tonys that they weren't considered for at the other ceremonies.
It certainly is, especially since d'Amboise wasn't all that great. She was acceptable, but Walsh was much better. I'm also pretty shocked that Ashley Brown got a nomination over Debra Monk. Hopefully the Tonys don't pan out this way. It would be a shame to leave someone who really deserves a nod out by giving a slot to someone who is quite simply, terrible. While I love Mary Poppins and think it's a phenomenal show, I am a little shocked at the amount of nominations it got. I am glad that the show got recognized, but I hope the Tonys provides a different set of nominations and I do think that having a fifth slot will change up the nominations. I am glad Brown got some kind of recognition though. I found her portrayal of Mary to be extremely refreshing and very well done.
One thing that bodes really well is Orfeh's nomination. It's nice to see her already getting recognized and if that's the ONE thing that the Outer Critics chose to pick out and reward for Legally Blonde, it looks like a Tony nom may be in the future.

I wont judge the noms, because I havent seen the recently previewing shows, but the Outer Critics are not indicators of Tony Noms...take a look at past years. Even the DDs get it very wrong, last year snubbing Color Purple altogether.

It won't. It all makes sense because I remember two seasons ago. S*hitty S*hitty got a plethora of nods at both the Outer Critics and the Drama Desks and got, I believe something like four at the Tonys. The more artisically successful shows (with the exception of Spamalot, which is far from artistically successful) got the bulk of the nominations. The big British toy train doesn't get the Tony nods folks.
Re: The Color Purple With the exception of the desing categories and Felicia P. Fields, it deserved every single, solitary snub the Drama Desks gave it. And it only won one Tony anyway. (And LaChanze, sick day queen of America, certainly didn't deserve it.) Updated On: 4/23/07 at 03:21 PM
I agree, there's no reason to start debating the why's regarding the OCC's. They are, as Margo said, an entity all their own. I don't think for one second that d'Amboise or Luker will be getting any other nods and I'm sure this round will be the most Poppins is going to get. The Drama Desk and especially the Tony's are going to look a lot different with few exceptions. That leads me to say how ecstatic I am that even the old OCC nominators recognized the excellent performance Orfeh is giving in Legally Blonde. As I've been saying since seeing the show in SF a few times, it's got a lot of problems but it's one bright spot is Orfeh. BRAVO!
Mary Poppins is a good show and I think it deserved the nominations. When I saw it I was suprised that it was actually "good" . I saw all the NEW MUSICALS this season on Broadway and i must say that MP is suprisingly " good " ( I like Legally Blonde & Pirate Queen too but I Think MP is better "overall" than those two. I did not like LOVEMUSIK , probably I did not like Weil's music , but I think its a good show and I was not suprised it was nominated. Going back to Mary Poppins. Even though It was produced by Disney , it was a very well put together show ( and I did not let my biases blind me against liking MP) I think it should be nominated for the Tony's Best New Musical Category too (with GG, SA & Curtains- just my opinion ), ofcourse GG should win ! just bec. I love the show and for the Best new Play - I like Coram Boy-j* Updated On: 4/23/07 at 03:30 PM
Having seen all the new musicals this season (save LoveMusik, which I'm seeing soon), I agree with you, jaystarr, that Mary Poppins is better than both Legally Blonde and Pirate Queen.
i am so happy with the Nominations, from a MP and curtains fan

I agree with Yankeefan et al about Mary Poppins being better than LB and PQ. Also didn't get to see LoveMusik, but saw everything else. I even think High Fidelity was better than LB and PQ.
Jbdc- yup ! I saw High Fidelity here in Boston twice for the tryout and I must say its enjoyable though I can tell it has some issues and I was wonderin' if the production team will fix it before they open in NYC at the Imperial THeater - but we all knew what happen! Correction - I actually did not see " Times They are Changing" (have I missed anything ? bec. it closed right away ) and "Fame Becomes Me" - if you will include that as new musical? These were my favorite new musicals this season from top (best for me) to bottom (least favorite) this Season: As you could see the top three (excluding GG) were the nominees at Outer Circle
1. Grey Gardens 2. Spring Awakening 3. Curtains 4. Mary Poppins 5. High Fidelity 6. Legally Blonde 7. Pirate Queen (on LoveMusik - I cannot really make a right & fair decision now bec. I walked out of ACT 2 on yesterday's 4/22 matinee - I dont know as to why I did it -- It could be I was sitting at last row in Mezzanine Center , where ( no offense) old folks (on our right) keeps talking during the show and believe it or not , the lady sitting on my right was sleeping and snoring .. I felt so claustrophobic at the Biltmore- honestly I am embarrased to admit I did not like the crowd ) my judgement was impaired on LM !! I did talk to the usher about my situation during intermission )and it took me like 5 mins to get out bec. some people wont stand up during the INTERMISSION to let me get out and go to the bathroom ! ) if I can stand at the back but he told me they dont allow it. Also I may add the lady sitting next to me has some unfortunate smell plus strong perfume and next to her is the sound guy with all these computer screen that is soo bright ( BTW my seats is MEZZ Row G 109) I am not complaining, this is expected .. I only pay $ 30.00 thru TDF and PROBABLY I might see the show again . I will give it a second chance.. I never walk out from a show before I stick thru Civil War (1999) at St. James Theater until yesterday's LoveMusik. Though I must admit I did not like Kurt Weil's Music, and this show reminded me of Parade (1999) at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
I'm happy that the nomination for Leading Actress went to Ashley. Congrates to Orfeh to being the only nominee from Legally Blonde, but I wish Jerry Mitchell received some recognition. As for Daniel Jenkins being picked over John Gallagher Jr, I'm lost. I was also surprised to see Bobby Steggert, rather than John Cullum. I kind of figured Charlotte would get a nod, but not Rebecca, but I'm just as glad anyway. What is In the Heights about, because they seemed to have enjoyed it, maybe a possible B'way transfer in the future? I wish there were more Spring Awakening parts nominated, such as Jonathan Groff instead of Michael Cerveris. All in all, I'm happy Mary Poppins is doing well (though the nomination for Score is a little undeserved).
At the risk of stating the obvious, the Outer Critics Circle nominations reflect the tastes of 9 people on its executive committee, just as the upcoming Drama Desk nominations (on Thursday) will reflect the tastes of the 7 members of its nominating committee. Both of them reflect a sampling of press. And then we'll get the Tony nominations, which are based on 26 people's opinions, which include playwrights, directors, designers, actors, executives, etc. ... It's a thankless job. Because no matter who they nominate, some folks will be thrilled and others will be crushed. That's just how awards go.
Whether or not I agree with them, I welcome the various nominations; I hope the different groups recognize some different folks. It's more fun and fascinating that way. Tony nominating committee
