I'd say "How Could I Ever Know" from Secret Garden for the exact same reasons as everyone elses-the reaching someone from the grave aspect...gives me chills every time I hear it.
And the three of them (Karl, Orfeh, Price), were all in Saturday Night Fever together. I will agree with Orfeh, just about anything the Gershwins' wrote could get my vote. I appreciate her sense of humor with regards to the "long running" Fascinating Rhythm.
Favorite: Where's the Girl?- Scarlet Pimpernel (Terry version) I die of happiness whenever I hear that song.
Other noteables: You Walk With Me- Full Monty Wanting- Rags (Another Terry song) Secret Soul or Sirens- Jane Eyre Unworthy of Your Love- Assassins
Just to cover all bases: Any love song ever written by Sondheim or sung by Terrence Mann or James Barbour.
If Percy Blakeney were in Les Mis....
Percy: Sink me! If it isn't Javvurt!
Javert: Zsah-vair, it's pronounced Zsah-vair.
Pecry: But it's spelled J-A-V-E-R-T Javvurt.
Javert: Repeat after me Zsah...Zsah....
Percy: Oh! Zsa-Zsa! Like the Gabor sister! Well I personally have always prefered Eva.
Javert: (Looks for gun)

Lea Salonga's pick "Sun and Moon" from Miss Saigon is actually one of my favorite love songs. Here are my other picks:
1. Fallin' from They're Playing Our Song 2. If He/She Really Knew Me from They're Playing Our Song 3. If I Loved You from Carousel 4. What About Love from The Color Purple 5. For Good from Wicked 6. God Only Knows - not from a musical but I like Joss Stone's version. 7. When October Goes from Could It Be Magic
"I love acting. It is so much more real than life." Oscar Wilde "After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." Aldous Huxley
I am well aware that the soundtrack to When Harry Met Sally... is covers of old standards. However, I don't recall Harry Connick, Jr. singing "I Could Write a Book" at any time in Pal Joey, and his version *IS* from When Harry Met Sally, which was not a movie musical. It's not just the lyrics that make the song romantic and wonderful, but also the performance.
Therefore, I will once again state that "I Could Write a Book" *FROM* When Harry Met Sally... is perfection in my mind, even though it is not from a musical.
"It's not for sissies, contrary to popular belief." - Tommy Tune, on musical theatre.
I was going to say I can't believe how many people are saying so many songs about unrequited or lost love are their favorite songs...that is so masochistic. "Still Hurting"??? Oh my God how can that be anyone's favorite love song? It makes me want to die. (whoa melodrama) and "On My Own" I have loved since I was 12 but it's really sad if considered a favorite love song.
Even "The Next 10 Minutes" I find bittersweet. Yes the words and meaning are beautiful and really grasp the beauty of love in the moment...but I have a problem taking songs out of context. I can't listen to that song without thinking, "BUT THEN LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!" How am I so cynical at 21? Oy.
Anyway...I then realized that the song I immediately thought of as my favorite love song is just as much a double-edged sword as some of the others!
"You Should Be Loved" from Sideshow. It is SO BEAUTIFUL, but in the end...she cannot take that risk, and he if left with all this love for her that he can't give to her. Hmm...
Screw it, I'm with John. Send in the Clowns.
edit: oh hahahahahaha musicaltheatre1 you said "For Good" HAHAHAHAHAHA that's awesome.
--Like an odd exotic creature on display inside a zoo, hearing children asking questions makes me ask some questions too...--
Mine: "All I Ask of You" (The Phantom of the Opera) "All the Wasted Time" (Parade) *such a beautiful tune* "I'll Cover You" and "Seasons of Love" (RENT) "You Are Beautiful" (Flower Drum Song) "To Have and to Hold" (The Beautiful Game) "Love to Me" (The Light in the Piazza) ...Though there are many, many out there...
