jordangirl,
I can. How about a 'Dan' who actually has a rock voice.

Well, Bobby is certainly a wonderful actor...but the score has enough 'modern-ness' in it for it to require a 'modern' singer. There are plenty of 'rock voiced' Broadway stars that are excellent actors *cough* Norbert *cough* that they could have cast.
THIS is why I don't usually bother with these opinion questions. ANYONE else can state an opinion and it's fine. But the second I decide to chime in with an opinion, I'm immediately told it's wrong. Fine. I can take a hint.
(And for proof, I am NOT the first one to name n2n. Go back and look.)
BTW...have you even seen the show yet or are you still going solely by the cast recording?

jordangirl,
LOL, by no means did I mean to be snarky or mean (nor did I mean to look like I'm correcting you). I was just stating an opposing view. Sowwy, girl.

I left tingling after performances by the original casts of Sweeney Todd and Urinetown. I thought the original Broadway Spelling Bee cast elevated what I thought was a slight script and okay music to terrific heights.
I also think Rock of Ages had a great opening cast, and Savannah Wise hasn't hurt it the show at all.

Who is "jordangirl"? I don't post here often, but I'm sorry these posts are so over the top. You are clearly beyond the point of obsession with Alice Ripley. Its just creepy and disturbing. I know there are other fans of other shows that cross the line. Anyone else have stories?

My top five would be:
1.) I Am My Own Wife
2.) Mostly Sondheim
3.) The Blond in the Thunderbird
4.) The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All
5.) Freak
In each case, the featured cast members beautifully supported the stars and played like a finally tuned instrument. I've never seen more cohesive ensemble work outside of "Laugh Whore".

Oh my god, you must see my obsession for Gavin...THAT's creepy and disturbing.

Norbert doesn't have a "rock voice." For that matter, neither did Brian D'Arcy James. AndAllThatJazz, have you even seen the show yet? Never once in the 30-plus times I've seen the show did Bobby ever seem out of place with the others. He is giving a remarkable performance.

Someone e-mailed me and alerted me to jordangirl's facebook.
It gets more and more disturbing. Be warned.
I really enjoyed the cast of Curtains right down to the ensemble members. I don't know if anyone will agree with me, but whatever - I enjoyed them.

To be honest, very few broadway performers have actual rock voices, that is exactly why I put those little quote things ' ' over it. The only performer I can think that has a TRUE rock voice is Daphne Rubin-Vega (I know a lot of people can't stand her, but her voice is DEFINITELY a rock one...without a doubt). Anywho, when people on a theatre board refer to someone with a 'rock voice', they usually mean a vocalist with a modern-ish sounding vocals. For example, Hugh Panaro has a more old-fashioned tone to his voice...Norbert Leo Butz's is a little more modern, if that makes sense to you (And by no means am I saying that Bobby sings like Hugh Panaro, just an example). My point is, even though Bobby has a good voice...I feel it doesn't fit N2N's score very well. Whenever I listen to him singing 'I've Been', he just seems to sound out of place. That's just my opinion though. As far as acting goes, he seems to be just fine (from what I've seen of him in short clips) and the general opinion of his performance seems to be very favoring, but it isn't fair for me to judge his acting because I haven't seen the show. I haven't seen N2N...if I could see it, I would....but unfortunately, I can't. All I'm saying is, when I listen to him on the cast recording...his vocals seem out of place for the music and slightly too old fashioned. Sure, if I said 'Bobby can not act to save his life', that wouldn't be fair because I haven't even seen him act, but I don't see anything wrong with me saying Bobby is vocally out of place for Next to Normal, considering that I have hear him sing the music on the cast recording.
ETA:I also felt that Brian D'Arcy James was vocally out of place in that role as well.

I really liked the cast of the recent Company revival, particularly Raul. (That production got me into Raul AND Sondheim).

While nice of you to say Savannah hasn't hurt the show, a more accurate statement would be
"Rock of Ages NOW has the perfect cast, as Savannah Wise is superior in every way"
I am extremely disappointed that she is not the lead on the OBCR.
