Anthony Rapp is a public figure. Public figures can't take everything negative said about them to heart. My only beef with Rapp is that he wallows in the glow of the wonderful fans on the site and yet snaps at those of us who beg to differ. You see, the sword cuts both ways (thats for you Evelyn).
Can you imagine if Britney Spears appeared on this board to defend every negative comment thrown her way?
Not to drag up the "should celebrities post on message board" arguments, but frankly, there is a reason most don't...
Do you guys think he wasn't civil? I thought he handled himself well, and a helluva lot better than I would have.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson
Well, I think it's ridiculous to expect him not to defend himself.
When someone says something about you, regardless of how famous or not you are -- you're going to want to defend yourself. And by being a member of this community, he has the means to do so. If some random poster were to be defensive of bad things said about him or her self, would people give a damn? No. Perhaps people don't think he should do so, but that's his choice, is it not?
"You see, the sword cuts both ways (thats for you Evelyn)."
Aha! And you just know I was hearing your own voice right up until that point. Then it became deeply man-ish.
ETA on my last post: I guess some people still care about the "should celebrities post" issue and that's fine, but I was specifically responding to posts on this thread to the effect that "some people" (i.e. me) have big issues with Anthony Rapp being here when it was A MONTH AND A HALF AGO that said issues were raised! I honestly don't care anymore. Updated On: 12/13/05 at 10:56 PM
I have always been of the "public figures can do as they please" camp. If they lose fans, then they are just hurting themselves. If Britney were hear defending her self I would feel the same way. Her defenses are just that, they mean nothing more than my attacks. But they would provide interest, for those that care at all.
"Then again, I wouldn't post if someone hated my work.
I'd focus on those who do...because those are the people who I care about making happy."
GOLLY, that's what Chris Columbus did with the film, and look where it got him!
Except, GENIUS, I am not talking about marketing. I am talking about being an actor in something. And if you mean Chris trying to appease Rentheads and not the general public - that's another story I'm too tired to school you in.
Just for the record, when I posted that I know there are some who don't believe Anthony should post, I wasn't going for one person, but a general sentiment. Really. I know that there's a fairly large camp of people who think that artists shouldn't be a part of the message board community, and I was not at all targeting anyone in specific. I would only do so if there were only one person guilty as charged.
I am always irritable as well. I don't think you were necessarily posting to me though (BSO, I never can tell when you joking or being serious.) Actually cantakerous is more the description.
Emcee -- I'm not debating their right to defend themselves, merely the productivity of it. If Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie personally patroled message boards and defended every negative review, every gossip report, every speculation written about them - they would have no time for anything else. They are public figures and they accept it goes with the territory.
Yes, Rapp is entitled to defend himself if he so pleases. But he's always going to be fighting a losing battle. Frankly I find his need to defend himself against such unimportant chatter as on BWW a little pathetic. And that has nothing to do with my respect for him as an artist, merely as an agent of his own PR.
Well, of course it's got more consequences. To be expected... which, I suppose, is part of the reason I'm not really taking issue with it.
I see it differently -- but by virtue of the way in which I've ever been brought into conversation with him -- not as a PR stunt, but at least at its core the fulfillment of a desire to bridge the gap a little bit. Things like what went on today -- defensiveness, etc -- are the negative consequences that come with his decision to create a dialogue. Unfortunately, I think it all gets meshed together, and a lot gets misinterpreted -- even the best of intentions are bound to be misread as some shameless attempt at good PR.
Aside from that, I don't think it's fair to equate this to a big-name celebrity about whom there's a hoard of gossip every single day, etc -- in a lot of those cases, whatever movie they do is just a job, hardly something they've devoted themselves to, mind, body and spirit, like the situation we've got here. Not to knock their committment, but I think we can all recognize that it's a little bit different. Anthony's not only defending his good name, etc, but a piece of work he believes in. A lot. And whether or not you liked the movie, or like Anthony, or like Anthony's work, I think that's recognizable.
*sigh* It's all measley pocket change at this point.
The use of message boards is in the long run probably about to become a major part of pr. The use of the medium is still in its infancy, but the blogs and websites are now a major part. I think stars will learn to use them better in the future.
Point well taken, Em. And I love Anthony's enthusiasm for the project, but there does, again, come a time where you just have to let it go. It's done. It's over. The film's been made. People like it or don't like it. And they will like it or not like it for the rest of time. It's time to move on.
Wow, all this career advice for Anthony. I guess Michael Bennett and DAME must be incredibly successful to feel that they are in a place to give out tips.
And Anthony hardly calls to arms every time someone insults him. It's the gigantic threads where his integrity is being repeatedly attacked that he bothers to step in. Can you honestly say that you wouldn't do the same if it were you?

I suppose. But next to that, I just keep seeing how... "in his bones" this is, and I can see why he does this. And, of course, I just like the guy. I'm not going to lie.
