"i'm just disappointed RENT wasn't made into a film that would garner some kind of recognition from the industry."
^ The post I would've written if I thought to contribute to this thread an hour ago.
Oh well, congratulations to Ziyi Zhang and John Williams! Neither will win but at least the HFP members have shown with the nods that they have minds of their own.
Yeah, to each his own (as has already been said several times here). I think LIT is far more deserving of the "Orientalist" label that has been attached to Memoirs, but I can definitely see how others might be affected by the story.
and don't get me wrong EverythingisRENT. i'm not chiding you for liking the film. it's great you loved the film, that was your experience with it. i respect that.
i'm a very big fan of RENT. i saw it OFF and ON Broadway. it's one of my favorite musicals of all time (DREAMGIRLS is #1) but i can honestly say that in my opinion, as someone who has been waiting almost a decade for this movie to be made that it really wasn't all that it could have been.
now, i hope i won't be echoing those same sentiments next year when DREAMGIRLS finally hits the screens. and i've been waiting the better part of TWENTY YEARS for that one to be made.
EverythingIsRENT, I really did. And even after seeing iti n a early screening and hating it; I still went and bought a ticket on opening day to support it ( but I snuck into see the much better "pride and prejudice".
Well . . . first of all you get this whole Zach / Cassie history played out in flashback . . . totally unnecessary and ridiculous. You have Audrey Landers cast as Val . . . but she can't dance, so you don't even see her in most of the full company dance numbers. "What I Did For Love" becomes a Cassie solo . . . why? "Music and the Mirror" gets ripped off and becomes "Let Me Dance For You," but it's basically the same lyrics and a lot of the same instrumental sections . . . definitely the same musical structure. "Hello 12" gets hacked to pieces (and is SUCH an important part of the original piece) and there's this new song "First Time We Made Love" that's a total piece of trash. There's really nothing about it that's good. I mean, the only way I think this piece could even work as a movie ANYWAY would be if it were as if it was a documentary and you were actually capturing an audition with a hidden camera. The material an concept were completely destroyed by a bad adaptation.
What's done is done. I think that in twenty years, musical theatre geeks will love it because it's Rent and its brave optimism may be needed.
As for now, I'm more concerned about what this bodes for the future of musical films. I desperately wanted to see the rumored Mendes-directed SWEENEY TODD on screen.
And I am truely sorry it did not deliver for you, Marquise. But to be fair ,could ANYTHING live up to ten or TWENTY years of expectation? I'm just trying to be realistic. I haven't loved the show as long as you, but I told myself not to get my espectations too high, maybe thats why I appreciated the movie for what it was.
Dame, maybe you should give the movie another chance. Look what happened with Munk after his second viewing. But regarldess of what you thought, your gleeful bashing in this and other threads is disgusting. If you hate the film, fine, but don't be HAPPY about a lack of nominations.
Chicago did well and The Producers seems like it will do well, so I think there's still hope.
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson
My bashing is not gleeful. My bashing ( your word.. not mine) is more directed at the bull of those who blindly love something and can't even recognize the garbage in front of them. ( they could have filmed play doe for two hours and you would have still "loved it".) Theres even a few of you who went on and on about crying when you saw it and so on and so on.. that have gone on to totally recant.
I should add that if you honestly enjoyed it... then good for you. I just ..I guess.. don't buy it.
"And I am truely sorry it did not deliver for you, Marquise. But to be fair ,could ANYTHING live up to ten or TWENTY years of expectation?"
Um. I've had about three years of expectation, and it did not live up to that. My only expectations were that it would be at LEAST as good as the show. It was not. There are quite a few important moments removed, there are much greater plots holes. I didn't want to walk in and see MORE blatant flaws.
I feel the need to belatedly declare my utmost hatred for Lost in Translation, and not because I'm taking sides with the rest of the Rent fans. There was virtually no story and that only works if there is a very strong central theme. LIT had loneliness, but it was too vague and artsy to hold my interest. I couldn't find any reason to care about the characters.
Did you mean "playdough"? And how can you blame us for loving something? PLENTY of us who adore the film have pointed out our problems with it. But you know what, those become irrelevent because of the powerful music and message of the movie. We love it DESPITE flaws, so sue us. I just don't get the joy in ripping apart any fim and focusing on only flaws. I'm an optimist that way.
Your tone in any RENT thread has been gleeful. And I have not seen anyone recant a positive review, but if you can show me one...
I like Dame, bought a a ticket on opening day for RENT even though I saw an advanced screening and thought it was a poorly made film. I saw the show many times when it first opened, and yes, of course, I wanted the film to be great. But it wasn't.
As Dame says, we have had to listen to the Rentheads go on an on about this film for months.
But the lack of GG love for the film is admittedly slightly refreshing to those of us who feel the entire project has been surrounded in slightly delusional posturing by its fans and even some of its cast members on this board.
Most people think the film is bad. Poorly made. A missed opportunity. However you want to phrase that. And its fairly absurd for complaining about its lack of film awards.
That said, there is nothing wrong with liking it the movie. There are plenty of horrible movies that I love (BEACHES). But it's time to call a spade a spade.
One thing that really irritates me about this board is when people don't preface their comments with "I think..." or "in my opinion..." They may feel that this is implied, however to state (as if it were fact, not opinion) that the film version of Rent is "just bad" is disrespectful of those who disagree.
I happened to love the movie Rent, even in all of its Hollywood over-the-topness (in set design, for example). I think that Chris Columbus did an amazing job of making Rent into a Movie, and not just a Filmed Play. And I'm not alone in my opinion. Respected publications such as The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly agreed with me. It has a 7.2 at imdb.com, with fully 54.7% giving it a 10.
Many critics did dislike Rent, but that doesn't make it a bad film. At least an equal number of critics liked it (according to metacritic.com). I think that the producers/studio seriously underestimated its mass appeal or the public's awareness of the Broadway show, even after 10 years. To open this film wide, rather than beginning it limited in big cities and then moving wide was I think a big mistake.
In any case, the film will do very well on DVD. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually it makes back what it's lost, just on DVD sales alone, especially the way the CD has been selling.
I'm disappointed that Rent didn't do better at the box office and with the Globes. It's clearly a work of love and dedication by all concerned, and there were too many good elements (many fine performances, just for a starter) in it for anyone to say that it was "bad" or "sucked."
eslgr8, Of course it is only our opinion. What else would it be? And you know I have had issues with you in the past for likeing everything. But I do believe you. And I am glad you liked it. Why wouldn't I be. But you I believe. Others through their comments come of as they are just riding a renthead wave. I think MB's reference to Beaches is excellent. I loved it. I have watched it many times throughtout the years. But it is a bad movie. Time to call a spade a spade. Rent is a bad movie ( call it bashing.. call it what you want)
I don't see nearly as many people arguing that it was a great and well-made film as I do people arguing that it was horrible. Why do those of you who didn't like it feel the need to keep repeating yourselves? Believe me, we got it.
