Am I disappointed that my favorite movie of the year is not nominated? Yes. Am I surprised? Not really, unfortunately. Does it affect how much I completely love this movie? Not at all. Will the lack of GG noms keep me from going as many more times as I can before it leaves theaters? Not in a million years. Will this stop me from buying the DVD? Sorry, it'll be mine the day it comes out. And will people's nasty, spiteful, incendiary comments make any kind of difference either? no. Just makes them a giant a-hole.
^^ Wow Katy! I like it!
katygrace, that's exactly how I feel. Thank you.
The movie SUCKED and FLOPPED! GET OVER IT! ( he-he)
but the fact that you took the time to post all that katygrace shows it does bother you on some level.
i say everyone just ignore the thread and it will die a quick death...
Ok. If I must. But don't you just want to bitch slap some sense into all these people Marquise?
Thanks, guys. I have a hard time staying quiet around some people and their nastiness. There's really no reason to be so hateful about it. It's been said around this board many times but obviously needs to be said again. What's bad for one musical could ultimately mean bad things for many more!
DAME & Marquise- It's not the lack of nominations that bothers me. Like I said before, I had kind of expected it. It's the fact that some people have to rub it in the faces of those of us who love the film no matter what anyone else says.

Honey.. we have had to hear so much crap from rentheads .. that this IS the day to rub it in their faces. But I will be nice and not post here anymore. ( But the movie did suck the big wad and got exactly what it deserved) . -just had to get that last one in.
Eh. I completely understand, DAME. And since you and Marquise are both posters that I have a great dela of respect for, I thank you for your input.
I dare someone to say that Rent actually DESERVED a GG nomination. The fact is the source material is rather brilliant and yes, the screenplay made some brilliant choices, but the movie itself had some MAJOR missteps, mostly in the hands of Chris Columbus. It doesn't have the attention to detail that makes a film award worthy (anyone notice the modern day NYC banners and subway train? Not to mention the performance space, drug-user hangout, and other settings that were just over-done or had no sense of realism to them.) Why do Roger and Mark sing about lighting a fire to keep them warm and then throw it out the window? Why does Mark tell Alexi he quits from the rooftop? Why does a bus to New York leave from Sante Fe from the side of the road next to a little sign that says "Bus Depot"? This is by far not a well made film. It does point out some of the high points in the show, and overall, I enjoyed it because I enjoy the show and the story. But it would be an insult to the film industry if this were nominated for Best Picture.
Um, there are other awards it could have been dominated for other than Best Picture. And have you been to the bus depot in Santa Fe to be able to say it was represented inaccurately?

I really don't know how that happened. Maybe the nominations committee are all homophobic Republicans...
But honestly, The Producers (the musical version) translated HORRIBLY to screen. I don't see how it got any nominations.
I have been to the Bus Depot in Sante Fe, it is nothing like that at all. It doesn't matter at all in any scheme of things, but I am so excited to be able to say so.
alli2,
The Producers translated beautifully to the screen. I have now seen it twice. ( I know.. i was not going to post here anymore.. i know) And as for your statement saying the nom commitee must all be homophobic republicans... HELLO! BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN!
Rent was just bad.
I still don't understand the need to rub anyone's face in anything. After, Brokeback bombs at the box office, I don't plan on posting a thread about it. It can get all the awards in the world. Based solely on what I've heard on the radio, I predict that most straight american males will not go anywhere near this movie. Please, don't misunderstand me, I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

alli,
now you're just grasping at straws. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, a movie with gay themes received several nominations.
Are people surprised by this?
I'm not.
But, if you are, don't let it get to you. Check out some of their other nominations - some are laughable.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Brokeback won't be bombing at the box office -- it's already setting box office records. For what it cost, it'll break even by the end of this weekend, something Rent won't do in theatres and may never do even factoring in the DVD sales in a few months:
"The long-awaited film version of writer Annie Proulx's cowboy love story, Brokeback Mountain , opened December 9 to long lines of moviegoers in three cities. By the end of the weekend it had broken box-office records and carried home some of the first major prizes of the year-end season.
Open only in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles—five theaters total—the Focus Features film raked in more than half a million dollars, for an average of $109,000 per location, the highest per-screen average for any movie released in 2005."

I'm actually not surprised. This is the Hollywood FOREIGN Press. They are neither homophobic, nor republican. Most of them aren't even U.S. citizens.
Rent's appeal internationally is more in question here than Hollywood's with these nominations.
EDIT: And Margo -- It's not really hard to set a "per screen average" record if you only open on 5 screens. The press and PR Wagons are jumping on this (rightfully)... but it's not remotely a reflection of what it will do nationwide. I still have high hopes though.
Margo, it wouldn't disappoint me at all, in fact, it would make me very happy.
I only used it as an example because it is the other movie being talked about the most at BWW right now, and that a lot of people care about.
And honestly, I don't see it doing so well, especially, in the red states.
There are a lot of "Blue" people in those so called "red" states.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN's achievements in only 5 theatres in 3 states is impressive. I guess that shoots down the excuse of RENT not having any box-office *muscle* because of it's gay themes.
But the movie did suck the big wad and got exactly what it deserved
That's up for discussion. Besides, the Globe nominations were kind of off this year. I'm not disappointed that it was snubbed. The talented ensemble was recognized by the critics, and that is what's important.
