How cool to read your joy. So glad you enjoyed.
This show is pure joy, I agree! But I wouldn't put this fun vibrant, engaging and entertaining show in the same sentence as MHE. That show was never ending!

The book is hilarious & crystal clear. The music is infectious. The cast is stellar all around.
This one really came out of left field for me. I cannot recommend it enough.
Just pure joy."
I agree with everything you've said. I caught this last night and the chemistry, the incredible story, the gorgeous sets (What's good Floyd Collins??), the lighting, and the lovely music? It just all worked and felt so good to be in a theater where no one is miserable, bored, sleeping, or on their phone which I've ran into a lot lately with new shows. The audience was present and here for this.
Brava to this brilliant cast! Oh, the their merch is the best of the season.

Sounds like America’s Sweetheart is a producer on this thing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I saw this at today's matinee and was pleasantly surprised.
The Good: The performances were quite solid all around, with Tatianna Córdoba and Justina Machado shining in particular. The subject matter is timely without feeling exploitative or opportunistic. There are a couple of excellent songs (Fly Away is a standout). The sets, lighting, and costumes were all quite good. The title song (while it thematically kinda came out of nowhere) got a HUGE response from the crowd.
The Just OK: The book is cohesive (way more cohesive than some other recently opened shows) if a little expected. The score is solid and upbeat but could use another standout song or two. The Act Two pacing gets a little bumpy.
The Bad: Honestly, nothing was bad. I wish we had another scene for us to see the relationship between Ana and Henry develop a bit more, but the book is already doing quite a bit. Also maybe tweak the dialogue to clear up the amount of time that the show takes place in.
Anna has gotten her college offer and financial aid package but hasn't accepted yet (implying that it's right at the beginning of the summer), but then there's two weeks for the dress order, and she's off to college at the end of the show. Easily fixable with a line of dialogue or two.
This is a good show with a lot of heart, a timely, uplifting message, and some excellent performances. The sum is definitely greater than the whole of its parts. And I imagine it's only going to get tighter and stronger during previews.
Funny moment today when two of the performers had to restart a scene because of a missing set piece. "Sorry, we need to hold because my bed is missing."

I was wrong! So wrong!
I didn't think this show had a chance. Early songs sounded weak.
But damn this show is great! Only musical this spring where I want to hear the songs again!
I can see this being a runaway sleeper hit - I know I will be going back!

I saw this on Wednesday and absolutely LOVED it. Beautiful performances across the board, Fly Away has been in my head since (great version available now on streaming), and very timely. It takes place in the 80’s, but the conversations about immigration, ICE, etc. couldn’t be more relevant. Biggest surprise of the season so far. And one last thing, the diversity, color, shapes and sizes is astounding. A really wonderful night at the theatre!

Hearing these enthusiastic reports is giving me LIFE. Really fancied this after hearing the tracks available on Spotify and having them on repeat, and am now fully excited to see it in a couple of weeks.
HOLY SMOKES!! I just walked out of seeing this show TWICE today - my husband and I had tickets to the matinee and I immediately purchased tickets for the evening performance at intermission.
There are a lot of wonderful things to say about this show. There isn’t a weak link in the cast - Justina Machado impressed me with her Broadway prowess (I’ve only seen her on television) and Tatianna Cordoba charmingly wins over the audience from the moment she steps into the spotlight. But I could leave detailed praise about each performer on that stage - the way they worked together as an ensemble to tell this story was inspiring.
The story is relevant in its obvious parallel to current events, and uses the opportunity to invite the audience in to hear stories and consider perspectives that our conflicted nation has been desperate to hear. With that said, it also wouldn’t intimidate any rational person by coming across as pointed or preachy. It’s mostly a story of resilience, considering the hardships of others and holding space for them, and feeling comfortable in your body for exactly who you are and what you stand for.
The audience was firing on all cylinders for both performances - something that surprised me for a Sunday. Both performances were met with standing ovations at curtain call prior to the curtain rising. The evening performance received a standing ovation after the title number - met with audience members pumping their fists and the cast holding back tears.
Also, the sheer GOOFY, fun feeling this show gives you while you’re laughing. It’s just so darn heartfelt and simply CUTE at times. The audience was very diverse and it felt like a community at both performances - not many shows can break down those barriers.
Broadway cast album is due in June via Ghostlight Records, produced by frequent Huerta collaborator Julio Reyes Copello.
I'll start a new cast album thread when it has an exact release date. (It will most likely be June 6, the Friday before the Tonys.)
Saw this show this past Saturday matinee, and to echo was others have said, I absolutely loved it. While Maybe Happy Ending was my standing fave of the season Real Women has taken that slot. While MEH is the most unique and inventive in storyline, RWHC is the most accessible, despite the Spanish used on occasion, and most thoroughly hilarious and heart-warming. So many great songs! I'm still talking about Andres The Mess! (IYKYK)
And for a cold, rainy matinee, the audience was fired up with multiple standing ovations, and some (polite) hoots and hollers. The cast was uniformly excellent, and it was so wonderful to see Justina Machado have such a great role, and so many others making their Broadway debuts.
I was sitting near a young school group - god help me - and for the most they were engaged, even when it started to become a little ballad-heavy and talking about things way beyond their years. I heard their chaperones say it was their favorite show so far, and they loved it a lot more than Hell's Kitchen, which I guess they saw also?

Hey have you soon BOOP? Now that's a really cute and fun show!
“Hey have you soon BOOP? Nowthat's a really cute andfun show!"
I thought Boop was very cute!! I may also go back with a friend to see Boop again so they can see some of the genius staging and insane performances. RWHC is certainly a more well-rounded musical, but Boop holds its own as a fun night at the theatre. :D

Adding my voice to the chorus of praise for this show in early previews - if this is the shape it's in after a week, I cannot even imagine how the JEJ will remain standing once this show opens. The roar of the crowd was twice what I've heard at completely sold out shows. The reception for the title number potentially even dwarfed some of the loudest audience responses from Sunset.
There is obviously the inclusion of undocumented immigration as a hot-button issue, but it's neither forced nor shoehorned in. The book is very funny without being ham-fisted, and the character development is FATHOMS deeper than the movie. It's a different, deeper, more soulful story. I was not expecting to be walking out with tears in my eyes, but I was not the only one.
Calling it now that this is a sleeper hit and will have a decently healthy run. Also worth noting that Joy Huerta is a MASSIVE, MASSIVE star in Mexico and the audience was packed with families who looked exactly like what was on stage.
An absolutely rapturous celebration of everything worth fighting for. Go see it immediately.

I'm loving all this joy. RWHC wasn't even on my list for a 4-day, 6-show-trip next month, but it certainly is now.
I'm close to pulling the trigger on a right mezz aisle seat — one row above where it would cost me an additional $89. But before I do, any particular seating suggestions?
Thanks!

None, sightlines are (shockingly - for this season) excellent across the board.
The company will perform from the show this Monday, April 14 on Good Morning America.

Still working on my own review, but I sat side mezz on the aisle. It was a perfect view. If you use the CURVES promo code it's only $79 (vs the regular listed price of $125.50). If you buy at the box office (which may not be an option if you're not local) it's only $64. (But I agree with the above; sightlines for this show should be great all around.)
Color me surprised, this show is actually pretty good. Some great songs, a lot of laughs, and bunch of heart. I’m not familiar with the source material at all, but boy does this show have some plotholes. Plus for a musical that is literally named for the curves of a woman, the body positivity message seems to have gotten lost on the way to Broadway. But I wasn’t expecting an 80s immigrant story at all, and found those moments to be quite powerful. And really, I think these are some of the best new songs on bway this season. The duet with the boyfriend was great fun, as well as a smattering of others. We’re gonna be seeing these in cabarets for years to come.
Oh and let’s give it up for the real star:

Yeah all the women are great - but the boyfriend - Mason Reeves as Henry is the best performed/ written nerdy young man since Justin Cooley stole his scenes in Kimberly Akimbo!

Saw this Wed. night and haven't left a theater feeling that impressed, pleased and/or effusive about a new musical in a really long time. Sat dead center in the mezzanine and the energy in the audience was palpable; from the chatter, it seemed like quite a few people's first Broadway show. Seemed like the crowd also loved it -- not as many door rushers as I've recently seen.
And to echo all the other praise: absolutely loved the set, the costuming and the show as a whole. Also, was my first time in the mezzanine since they added the annex, and wow, what a pleasant experience! Plenty of bathroom and lobby space and overall a less-hectic environment.

I sat read side orchestra and front center orchestra - the view is certainly better the closer to center you sit, and I think mezz would be a bit better to see the staging and choreo. An inner aisle seat on either side of the aisle would be primo.
