Definitely a great scene..but I can see why they cut it from the film. I definitely am going to side w/ Chris no matter what..I believe in him just as much as the cast does.
"Columbus was right - it was just poorly filmed, at least he could admit it, although he hasn't given an explanation yet for the other poorly filmed 2 hours and 15 minutes of the movie."
That's pretty much what I was going to say.
It's amazing how wrong he was for the job. It amazes me more and more with every new thing that comes out about this film.

Amen.
I have to agree with him being wrong to make the film too. It saddens me that the movie was so horrible, but it's too late now--unfortunately.
Hooray!
well, if four kings is any indication of Julie Larson's skills or lack thereof as producer (and not let's not forget the other famous producers) I think we can't give all the blame to Columbus.
Oh, of course not. The marketing was pretty crappy and misguided as well. It seems as though most of the people involved were very blind-sighted about this; it's almost as though they felt it would turn out great no matter what because it's Rent and it has it's fanbase.
He's not the ONLY one, but he certainly was the main problem.
I remember there was an interview on Brodway.com when he discussed other possibilities of movie musicals he was interested in directing, and I have to say, I shudder just thinking about it.
the movie could have been better, but i liked it though...just cuz of the fact that it was rent
On the deleted scene:
Personally, I think that "Goodbye Love" and, since it's also a deleted scene on the DVD, "Halloween," are rather important in the story. Roger and Mark's fight is especially important for character development. I can see why they decided to leave both out of the movie because I suppose they could've slowed down the ending, but I still think they should've been left in the movie.
Anyway, onto the actual scene...The fact that this scene takes place in the apartment rather than outside the church fits the movie very well (before I get attacked, I said it fits the MOVIE). I think it adds to the emotional "turmoil," if you will, of the movie. Although it was short, I think that the scene was pretty good...I found myself wanting to shout after Roger's car, but of course, that was due to my complete insanity, not the scene.

Well, yeah. That's where it takes place in the show as well...

Why is Rosario Dawson constantly straight-toning? x_x It drives me absolutely nuts!
Anyway... well, yeah, the way he directed it that would have dragged it down... but in its original form it would have been fine, I think... The Roger and Mark argument is IMO necessary to establish the real reason that Roger is leaving.
I will never defend Chris Columbus. For pete's sake, he set the film in 1989 just because that's when he lived in NYC, despite all of the anachronisms the change created.
Am I the only one who cannot watch the clip? All I'm getting are ads for Secret and Pantene each time I click "play". Any ideas?

i get the pantene stuff too, which sucks because I really want to see this.

It doesn't play the clip after the ad?
I had that problem on my PC -- the ad just looped FOREVER.

Does it onstage? I thought it was all still post funeral, at the graveyard.
At any rate, my point is that every time the movie picked up the slightest momentum, it was killed by draggggging things out. Look at this brief clip, even. There's all that extra music before Rosario finally gets to spit out the final "Good-bye Love" chorus.
bah I got so excited, but it won't let me view it. stupid hopes

I'm 90% sure it is in the apartment. Everyone enters and exits the stage in that scene by that gate that is used as the loft entrance. And the ""You heard?" "Every word." part always gave me the impression that Roger and Mark were in their apartment fighting, and Mimi was outside the door.
Though, the set is abstract, so...it's unclear. I've always thought it was at the apartment.
I have put it on megaupload for the people that can't get it to work the normal way. it is an MP4 converted to PSP size (7MB)

I feel as if Mark's character really got screwed over in this cut, too. Goodbye Love as well as Halloween. Many of my friends who saw RENT without listening to the OBCR or seeing the show just thought that Mark was some whiny little character. In my opinion, Mark is anything but a whiny character, and these cuts really took a toll on him. Maybe I'm just attached to the role, but I feel that the amazing character development that he has was really reduced to hardly anything.

That was dissapointing. I wanted to see the Roger/Mark fight.
Yeah I totally agree.. I felt that in the movie he was a bit annoying and whinny and not at all like the real Mark, and I knew the real character before seeing the movie... I was so disappointed. Even Angel I felt was not as vibrant a character as he(she? lol) is in the show. Ah now I am just angry again, almost all of the characters were messed up. Collins was great, and Roger, and Mimi and Maureen were okay character wise, but Angel, Mark and Benny were just not themselves and I was severly disappointed. Joanne I didn't really have any complaints with but her parents were definitly all wrong. Okay I don't want to start anything up again lol if only they could do it all over again and do it right!
i enjoyed the movie for what it was; it was not a masterpiece, and had its flaws, but it is a must-see for any renthead. it shouldn't be such a crazy topic - you either like it, appreciate it, or don't. whatever, dudes.
i still wish that (and the fight) were kept in though - it would have made the transition to roger in his britney spears video seem more justified. just an opinion.
turquoisefish, I downloaded your clip but it only came up as audio
"turquoisefish, I downloaded your clip but it only came up as audio "
I know it plays ok in Quicktime. if it audio only it means you do not have the correct codec (sorry to get technical) download the latest version of quicktime, that should work
