Alan, thank you for your approach in this thread and for even showing up. Both of which we need more of -- not necessarily from you, but from people like you.
When users get to know and interact with staff (or "staff" if unpaid), people are more inclined to make the place not suck. I wish you and other levelheaded-sounding mods, whoever they may be, had been around more.
"This thread reads like a series of White House memos." — Mister Matt
alan henry. since you are so active and responsive on here, unlike 99.9% of the other staff, i would like you to explain why we dont have the luxury of knowing who the moderators are. on every other chat board and message board i am a member of, there are users who actively engage and post but are moderators. and they have that clearly marked with their username. right now the majority of these people are faceless, nameless idividuals who have been given the power to suspend and ban posters. private entity or not, that is tyrannical.
Not all the example quotes were objectionable; the vast majority of posts on the Nerds threads were sympathetic to the cast and crew for the show closing. It's convenient to ignore all the positive posts, isn't it? The objection is taking "evidence" like that and painting very generally across discussion forums. The objection is that some performers who "should" engage fans understand nothing about a social online community venue and are calling for its shutdown due to a couple conveniently cherry-picked quotes. People here who call each other out for being rude aren't demanding that their accounts be deleted, since that's what the ignore feature is for; the simple question is, why can't performers ignore? The whole "rude" thing in general is itself a difficult topic because so many self-appointed artists are over-sensitive to criticism and take everything personally as well (but they shouldn't be in the business at all).
Man oh man this whole thing has taken on a life of its own.
I cannot believe some of you are contemplating a black list of performers who have sided with Patti on this issue.
Craig and Rob have made it perfectly clear that they do not intend on moving the board or outright censoring us all they are asking is for members be respectful of each other and the performers and shows we are discussing on this forum.
Have I ever been the most well behaved poster on these boards. No, not by a long shot. But when I haven't been it was always in response to an attack on me or one of my posts. Yes I could have ignored some of these attacks? Sure and sometimes I do but sometimes I will not hesitate to call someone out on their ish. If you can't stand the heat then by all means get out of the friggin kitchen.
Don't start crap and then when your called out on it start acting like the victim. That's downright lame. Own up to it.
I wholeheartedly agree with Craig. Think before you hit that send button. It's something I am going to make it my business to do from now on.
I honestly think this needed to happen. A mirror was just held up to all of us and what we are seeing now isn't pretty. We don't like it, but sometimes the truth hurts.
How we decide to conduct ourselves on this board going forward will say a lot. I truly hope the changes are for the better.

Or, if you're a performer, tell the owner of the kitchen to remove the oven because you heard it gets too hot.

Let's all make it clear to the theater professionals we know personally that 99% of the posts on this board are positive, from posters of all ages who passionately love the theater and individual performers.
And let's make it clear to them that for every negative post about a performer or a show, there are a dozen or a hundred in favor of that show or in love with that performer. There are fan threads and love threads and Rentheads and Wicked devotees and Avenue Q groupies and Book of Mormon maniacs and Color Purple people and American in Paris devotées and King and I loyal subjects--and posters for whom Cabaret or Chicago or Hedwig or Hello Dolly are the greatest things that have ever happened. Literally.
And tell them all, as I will, that there are endless threads about shows like Hamilton (and others) that are exclusively celebratory, sometimes overwhelmingly celebratory, sometimes to the amazement of posters who have not seen the show yet.
And please tell those theater-professional friends, as I will, that we think that performers like Patti Murin who call the board names like "cesspool of negativity" are insulting the rest of us, selectively noticing the negative posts and deliberately ignoring the overwhelming fact that BroadwayWorld is a place where people from teenagers to octogenarians come to celebrate Broadway and the people who work there. That's who we are--and some of us, I dare say, are even Patti Murin fans. (Or were.)
And please tell those theater people, as I will, that for a single actress to call for the boards to be taken down, simply because once one poster said something disparaging about her ability to belt a High C, well, we think that just stinks.
So I think the poster who said that, years ago, should apologize to Patti Murin. And I think every poster who has ever posted an ad hominem attack should makes amends to that performer. (As I will.)
But I think Patti Murin owes every true theater-lover on this board a deep and sincere apology for her terrible, awful and indefensible call to "take down the boards."
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
Pal Joey is spot on- the vast majority of post either praise shows/ performers or defends shows/ performers that have been criticized by others.
I'd hardly call the threads about Follies recordings, or photos of lost theatres or that fantastic recent thread about best Sondheim recordings "cesspits".
Those people who have jumped on the forum-bashing bandwagon need to
a) toughen up! in this business brickbats are flung from all directions!
b) stop reading a forum if they don't like it- just like bad reviews
c) get a sense of perspective- this forum has a very limited reach beyond Broadway fans. (Contrary to Andrew Lloyd Webber's ludicrous claims, chatrooms did not doom 'Love Never Dies'. A weak script and staging did that). I'm sure if they felt like it, the admins here could provide a number for how many people post/ follow the forum. If the site is heading towards 6 million posts over its life, that's a tiny percentage compared to attendances on Broadway and in the West End during that time.
Okay, baby. It's a lot less personal than you might think, if that makes you feel any better. I just think a lot of the high dudgeon surrounding PattiGate could be rolled back a notch.
Ooooh, Carlos's posts were deleted. I'm assuming at his request since he didn't seem to be violating any rules.
Also deleted was the post when I asked if anyone remembered how Craig would join in the Corine pile ons.
"Also deleted was the post when I asked if anyone remembered how Craig would join in the Corine pile ons."
I remember, and imo the piling on phenomena that is not uncommon here was wrong then, and it is wrong now (especially with someone like Corine, who seems to - how to put this? - have some issues). At least Craig is now against it.
"What guidelines am I violating?"
I think this probably covers it. Their board, their rules. It happens that they have finally decided to enforce them. This board is provided to us free of charge. They can do anything they want.
"We also reserve the right to modify or remove any post, topic or message for any reason, without notice or explanation. "
Looks like they are simply enforcing the rules they have always had.
Oh my goodness! Where's Fisherman Bob when you need someone to cut to the chase? Would love to read his response to all this hoo ha.
I daily check in to skim through everything to read what interests me and the scroll action is my best friend. I giggle at the bitchiness and thank whoever that it wasn't directed to one of my posts. I marvel at the knowledge of many here and learn about shows and people I will never see.
I take the good with the bad-as in life-and consider myself mature enough[70] to be able to make and form intelligent decisions about what I read and say. I shoot my mouth off, occasionally, and regret and apologise-that's what mature adults do.
I still miss sillysue and I love it when After8 chimes in and everyone pounces and all of a sudden Jane2 appears and think-people I have learnt to know in my short time on here are out there, reading with me and about to touch the send key as well.
Life is too short to boycott shows/performers/carry hurt and hold grudges.
We all make mistakes but we all have the right to be the person we created . Act the way YOU want but be aware that we all share this very small space-call it home/earth/Broadway.
