Sleep No More, the site-specific Macbeth adaptation that kickstarted a craze for immersive theatre, will close on January 28, 2024.
The loose adaptation, which reimagined Shakespeare's classic as a quasi-dance piece with audience interaction, began previews on March 7, 2011. Nearly 13 years later, it will close on its 5,000th performance, after enjoying more than two million attendees.

I can't even begin to imagine what will take over that space. So sad. An institution.

A little confused –– is the McKittrick Hotel closing too, or just Sleep No More? (I believe they're owned by the same people.) The McKittrick seems to do a bustling business for its bars, brunch, parties, etc, but the draw of Sleep No More or a similar immersive experience might kill some of the interest in it.

I believe it's just Sleep No More the show that's closing. The McKittrick still has their rooftop bar and the Club Car where they also host shows. I wonder what they'll do with the space the Sleep No More occupied, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at, and if they'll continue to try more expansive immersive productions that use the entire space or if they'll split it up. (Punchdrunk which was the company that created Sleep No More had another show in London called The Burnt City and I wonder if they'd consider bringing that over at all.)

I saw this show almost a decade ago and have such a arm memories or a great night with friends.
I must go back and experience that once again. I’m guessing I’m not alone. Maybe they might even extend.

Could this be like when The Strand announced it was going to close, sales went through the roof and then it didn't? Maybe this is just to get them through a sales slump?

Immersive theater taking a big hit this week, as both this and Here Lies Love have posted their closing notices. Interesting SNM only announced 2 months in advance after such a long run.
Luckily, Cabaret is coming in the spring to rake in all the dough!

Very glad that I recently went back to Sleep No More for a second time. I adore the piece and will miss it. I hope Punchdrunk finds a new use for the space.

This is pretty devastating.
This was a gift that should've run forever.

A little bit on future plans for the Venue in the NYT:
For now, the producers plan to continue the McKittrick’s other late-night shows and its bars will remain open, but they are uncertain if they will host another major show. “We want more than anything to finish up strong and to leave a great legacy,” Hochwald said.

I'm one of those in the minority that didn't love this, but what an amazing run! Kudos for them!

To those who’ve seen it recently, what shape is it in?
Nothing but praise for this incredible show. I’ll never forget my first time. Just a genius concept and production.

13 years of making your audience do all the work while paying through the nose and convincing themselves that they had a good time. Amazed it ran as long as it did. The Google reviews tell me I’m not alone in this view.
Bye Fleance!

Somehow I never got around to seeing this, but 5000 performances is certainly nothing to sneeze at this day and age.
Gonna be honest, I didn't even know this show was still open.

There's a bit of smoke and mirrors happening. SNM is closing, but I've heard through a few members of the company that a new immersive show from Punchdrunk, etc, will be taking over sometime in 2024. It's said to be in the same Hitchcockian vein/already being cast and workshopped.
With that being said, SNM was a true institution, and it will be really missed. So happy I got to check out the Halloween show last week. I'll never forget seeing the prophecy scene for the first time in 2011...

Devastating news. This show literally changed my life and it’s been a staple of my annual trips to NY for eight years. Bummed I never got to the sixth floor.

I mean, it’s a three-hour show with a huge cast and set and it costs less than a Broadway show. I’d say their prices are more than reasonable. I’m also not sure what “work” you had to do, but I’m sorry that you didn’t have a good time. I loved it and never had to convince myself of anything

I never saw SNM because I didn't want to deal with wearing both my glasses and a mask at the same time.
So of course I ended up wearing a mask to literally every single show I've seen in the last 3 years.

Oh sweetheart. You should experience the work before saying such lies. Go touch some grass

Posted: 12/6/23 at 12:38pmAbout a week ago, a certain well known nonbinary Muppet enthusiast and influencer posted a claim that Punchdrunk was phasing out Sleep No More in favor of a Phantom-based immersive show with ALW. If true, Iād rather see that than a traditional proscenium Phantom at this point.

It sound be mentioned that Arthur Karpati and Jonathan Hochwald are the very same producers behind Life & Trust, which abruptly closed with no notice last month, blindsiding the entire cast and crew.
