I actually really enjoyed Sutton Foster quite a bit (I wasn't expecting to be a fan). I did really miss the original Fosse choreography, however, and there really needs to be some brass in that orchestra. The music doesn't have the same power without it. I found the show to be charming, but I wished for more of a gritty interpretation. I would like to see Foster transfer to Broadway, but with another production of Charity.
Good thing you missed the 2005 revival. It was a hodgepodge of bubblegum, from the sets and costumes to the orchestrations and the rewrites. This revival is more faithful to the original production, but it's not a home run. It has the potential to be better, they need to fix the ending, and hire a new orchestrator.
Has anyone stagedoored this show? Is that something that can be done at this theater? I've never been to this one, but I'd really like to meet Sutton or at least drop off a gift of some sort.
All the performers come out through the lobby after the show, and all (including Sutton) seemed to be friendly and talking with the 15 or so people who stayed when I saw it.
I saw the show and thought it was wondedful! Sutton is giving such a great performance. So much charm and vulnerability. I actually liked the ending. Bear in mind that this was my first exposure to the show. I did miss the signature Fosse that the show is associated with but I enjoyed the choreography.
So cell they are eyeing a bway run, I'm guessing they'll wait for that.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I can't stop thinking about this show. I might be the minority but I think this show was just so good. Sutton was brilliant and the guy who played Oscar gave a great performance as well. Please go see it if you get the chance it's so special
Can anyone tell me if there's one side of the theatre that's better to sit on than the other two for this show? Or all the same? I've never been to that theatre and am looking at tickets now. Thanks! Excited.

It's a thrust stage that all parts of the stage are used equally. No matter what side you're on - it still feels intimate.
Frankly, I thought Als' review was quite sexist - and totally lacked any sense of understanding. It was like he went in so entrenched in his idea of what he wanted the show to be, that when it wasn't he got upset. The constant digs at Silverman throughout the "review" lacked taste, and the attempt at putting down her choice to make the work she does "count" was also pretty silly in my opinion.
I feel that people have gone into the show with their own expectations of what it should be - "bubbly" or "light", "dark", etc. Personally I enjoy seeing revivals that offer a new take on the work.
Saw this Wednesday night and yes Sutton is perfect for the role but this production left much to be desired. Choreography and orchestrations need to either be pumped up or rethought. Casting for everyone but Sutton needs to be looked at. There was some potential to gritty things up but those big musical set pieces - while wonderful to hear - tend to be so generic as not to lend themselves to grit. The standard Broadway choreography on a smal off Broadway stage seemed out of place. The actresses playing her co-workers looked like they were working in a corporate office rather than a seedy dance hall. I still think there are possibilities here but a new creative team may be needed to give Sweet Charity a more contemporary view
Ado Annie D'Ysquith said: "How's your luck with the TodayTix lotto been?"
I won today!!!!!!!! I was shocked since I've been entering the todaytix lottery for the past several weeks. Our seats were behind the staircase on the orchestra so I'm guessing lottery winners were also sitting behind hte staircase on the other side. Regardless, our view was perfectly fine as the theater is very small.
This is the first time we watched the show so we really didn't have any expectations but overall after watching the show I can't stop thinking about it. Good luck everyone!
This video from broadway.com seems to be the only one showing clips from the show. Does anyone know of any others?
