How about Sean Penn or Robert De Niro for Big Daddy?

Curious to see who he ultimately casts. His Shakespeare revivals aside, I think he’s still one of our more exciting interpreters of what a “revival” can mean. I’m one of the few who actually liked his Glass Menagerie, but also Glass Menagerie is an all-around more interesting play (to me) than Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, which I think is kind of a dud. Without two leads who almost combust with stage chemistry, it falls totally flat.

Sam Gold's iffy track record gives me pause. When he's great, he's really great. When he misses, he misses hard. Not sure that he's the director that I would've tapped for this, but I remain optimistic. Curious to see who will be in the cast.

I'll pass on Sam Gold, thanks. Haven't liked anything of his since Fun Home.

Again, though it’ll be almost 15 years between CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF revivals, it truly feels like it’s only been 5 years since the last one. Like GYPSY, this needs to be shelved for another 20-30 years and let it simmer before doing it again.

Hear me out... Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele?

The question here is which Sam Gold will we end up getting? The Sam Gold that gave us Fun HomeA Doll’s House, Part Two, and An Enemy of the People with Jeremy Strong? Or the Sam Gold that gave us The Glass Menagerie with Sally Field, King Lear with Glenda Jackson, and Macbeth with Daniel Craig?

I could also easily see one of the "Heated Rivalry" guys as Brick.

Gold is so much of a toss up as a director. I agree with those who say he either really hits or really misses - no middle ground.

He managed to win over and piss away my goodwill in the same year with (respectively) AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE and ROMEO & JULIET’S GEN-Z FEVER DREAM

Nice to see I'm not the only one who recoiled at Sam Gold's name. No thank you.

I can’t imagine Gold would agree to do this play unless he has a “vision” for it and that terrifies me. After Rebecca Frecknall’s ridiculous production at the Almeida in 2024, the most radical thing a director could do is to just give us a good version of the play - no gimmicks in casting or set design. Just give us a good Tennessee Williams revival.

While I agree with this sentiment, a thoughtful reimagining of Williams’ work can work really well. I’m particularly excited about BD Wong’s one-man Glass Menagerie in Philly next season.

Wasn't crazy about the National's production, either, which threw away some excellent work by Sienna Miller and Jack O'Connell.

I do wish Seaview was doing this off-Broadway.

As a huge Tennessee Williams fan, and a defender of some of his less popular work, I wish we would get a major revival of something besides his Big Three plays...  In 2012 (it doesn't feel that long ago) I was lucky enough to be in Chicago when David Cromer's production of Sweet Bird of Youth was running, with Diane Lane and Finn Wittrock, and I found it to be pretty close to perfect (even with one smart change to the original play's structure.)  I know it couldn't move to Broadway apparently because of Lane's schedule and no one was interested in bringing it in without her (Cromer initially was meant to do a Broadway revival the previous year, produced by Rudin.)

Gold did do a production of Picnic (which now seems mostly remembered for Seb Stan's abs) that, though I didn't see it, seemed to be completely traditional (and, disappointing to me as a big fan of the play, was mostly met with reviews by people who saw the production as proving their belief that Inge is simply not worth reviving.)  But of course that was one of his earlier Broadway productions.

Didn't the Almeida production also have the ghost of Skipper wandering the stage (something Rob Ashford was ridiculed for doing in his Broadway revival and I *think* was cut during previews...)

I forgot about that “Picnic” - a production I enjoyed.

And yeah, Skipper was always around on that bare Almeida stage. It was AWFUL.

Was just looking at reviews--instead of a large bed dominating the stage they had a... piano?  Oy!  (And apparently a jumbled script mixing together various different drafts and revisions.  I admit, while nearly every revival now uses the 1974 final Williams script, I have been curious to see a production go back to the 1955 Kazan script--but this wasn't that.)

I'm glad we are finally getting a Tennessee Williams play on Broadway this decade, last one was pre-pandemic with Rose Tattoo, right?

I love this play and never seen on stage before, hope the cast is good, but this title has not been lucky on Broadway in the last productions.

That wasn’t a National production.

That was originated at The Young Vic but got a National Theater Live release, so that’s easy to see why someone would think that.
