I never said that a professional photographer during a show was an impossibility. I stated that the cast would be made well aware that it was going to happen, and that the rules for that photographer would be clearly laid out. Some people tried to imply that the so-called professional was supposed to leave at intermission and that is why Patti wigged out. If that was truly the scenario, which I sincerely doubt, then there was a very bad breakdown in communication. A professional would also not say they were going to leave and then stick around for a few more shots without informing anybody, and as I said, given Patti's past relationships with stage management/company management, they would make sure she knew exactly what was going on. I don't believe for one second that it was professional photographer there that evening.
Now, I am not condoning her actions in any way either. I think stopping the show and publicly berating anybody is out of line. She clearly had no idea who or what she really saw, since many, many reports claim that nobody left, yet she continued anyway. If she really saw somebody taking pictures don't you think she would also be able to notice an usher leading them out of the theatre?

Okay, my hopes for peace on this thread have been officially dashed...life is too short, guys; good night!
Here, April:
I was there. There were no flashes.

This was just posted on TikTok. Per this guy Patti LuPone met the photographer from the video.

The poor guy was a sanctioned photographer and STILL got kicked out of that Gypsy performance? Was Patti told he was allowed to take pictures? If so, then I must ask her (on literally stopping the show nonetheless): who do you think you ARE?

The photographer posted this on Instagram a few years ago (link) - she was there for NYMag covering Patti's final performances, and had taken photos in the dressing room before the show (NYMag Article).

For decades we’ve known it was a female photographer. Her name is Gillian Laub AND she came forward and said LuPone reached out to her days later and profusely apologized yet LuPone has NEVER mentioned any of this. Even when she retells that incident she never adds the follow up. This girl just photographed LuPone for these new photos so she didn’t “just meet.” This girl was the assigned photographer that LuPone had to approve prior to the shoot.
This is the article Gillian photographed for NY Magazine with LuPone IN 2009! And when LuPone infamously stopped the show in the middle of “Roses’s Turn” having approved Gillian would be permitted to photograph her during that number.

The myth and that moment lives forever. Sadly, 99.9% are completely unaware of the facts about it.
It's so satisfying to read this thread all these years later, when the truth comes out. (or seemingly came out in that 2017 Instagram post).
Reading the responses to my comment at the beginning of this thread and just sipping my tea.
was it only 2017 that the truth came out? feels like so much longer ago that we learned they had been invited and Patti had forgotten
Well we LEARNED right after when some of us tried to tell people but nobody would listen.

I kind of remember this thread. But it is funny to read posts by people who thought they knew everything when in reality they know nothing. Then the truth comes out. Amazing how things don't change on this site. A couple of these people were out for blood. Where are the apologies to those posters who were correct from the beginning. Heaven forbid someone say something negative about a "favorite". This was 2009. It's worse now.
i met Patti in 2018 and I wish I had mentioned this event to her because it is honestly so iconic. Kicking someone who was invited to be there out while you're doing the 11 o'clock number to end all of them is ... life-changing honestly.

I rather doubt LuPone's life (or behavior) was changed in the slightest. I doubt she even regrets her action, and if so, it is likely a minor regret, like thinking for the next couple of days you shouldn't have popped that pimple, that the little red welt that was a bit more visible for 48 hours than the whitehead that preceded it was momentarily a tad inconvenient.

She should not have regrets. It gave us a glorious moment which will be talked about for a couple more decades at least.

Nothing glorious about bullying or verbal assault.
Wow!! I've just read this thread from beginning to end. It is truly appalling to read the downright disrespect of those comfortably behind their computer screens sending messages to shot, quarter, and waterboard members because they thought those who were actually reporting the truth were liars?!?! The demands to ban posters who were doing nothing more than offering information that spoke to the truth of this particular situation? Truly disgusting and abhorrent. These posters should be downright ashamed of themselves.
I'm glad the truth was finally confirmed and that the posters who knew the truth when they were being ripped apart for sharing it are vindicated.

This was an early ‘Karen’ moment demonstrated by Patti.

You’re applauding abuse and a profound lack of professionalism. This is never something to laud.
