The only time I have seen it was in a community theater production of Ragtime. The show was stopped 3 times with standing ovations. Most exciting night of theater in my life. Just so brilliant you had to jump out of your seats.
Mother, Father, Coalhouse, & Sara were all played by people who were or are now professionals. Graduates of Univ of Mich (3) or Oakland Univ (1)

When I saw Jersey Boys on tour, Joseph Leo Bwarie got a standing O from a few people after "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." The applause from the whole house lasted several seconds and seemed to stop the show. I know Bryan Fenkhart got a standing ovation after "Memphis Lives In Me" on the opening night of that tour.
I saw the most recent Follies in LA 4 times and each time, "Who's That Woman?" received a standing ovation. "Too Many Mornings" got one twice and "Lucy and Jessie" got one once. The prologue/overture got standing o's all 4 times as well.
Those are my only experiences of mid-show standing O's.
I saw Newsies in December and saw quite a few people stand up after Seize the Day. It wasn't a full standing O, but I think even now, after a year and half of their run, that number still holds quite a lot of spark.
"When HELLO DOLLY! was last revived on Broadway, the Immortal Carol received a standing ovation the moment she stepped off the trolley for "I Put My Hand In", another one at the end of the parade, another one when she appeared at the top of the stairs at the Harmonia Gardens, another one at the end of the "Hello, Dolly!" number and a last one at curtain calls. She deserved every one of them."
I saw Boy From Oz early in the run and Hugh Jackman stopped the show with a full standing ovation after Once Before I Go...I was like really? The only reason I stood was because those seats at the Imperial are so cramped and I'm long legged so I enjoyed getting the blood circulating in my legs again.
During the Tenth anniversary performance of Wicked, Defying Gravity got a full house standing ovation. Defying Gravity usually gets standing ovs for special performances like anything to do with Idina lol

While looking back on it, I do feel the standing ovations were justified but it seems crazy at the same time. When I saw RAGTIME back in 1998, it may have gotten an instant standing ovation at the end of the show but it got not just one or two throughout the middle but FOUR. I don't know what was in the air that night but the audience was completely in awe apparently. Your Daddy's Son got one but that one was very quick because the scene shifts so fast but it did seem to throw off the rhythm a little bit. Wheels of a Dream got one; the Act One finale got one and then Make Them Hear You.
The one that stands out for me was when I saw The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. I personally had little knowledge of the show prior to seeing it other than it transferred from off-Broadway and had William Finn and James Lapine involved. I knew it would be quirky and funny, but I left feeling inspired and in awe of the creativity behind it. The whole show was really funny and I loved the performances. The score was good, but the whole time I was thinking how much I would love a nice William Finn ballad....and then The I Love You Song came along. At the moment Lisa Howard opened her mouth, I immediately became entranced. The melody was just so pretty and yet so simple. The harmonies the last section stayed with me for the longest time and I can still vividly remember that whole performance. As soon as the number ended, I actually lept to my feet and so did a few people around me and then several others stood. It was the only time I ever felt the urge to instantly stand.
Recently, Andrea Martin got one with PIPPIN as is often stated.
I have seen Something Rotten twice...the first time I saw it "A Musical" actually did NOT get a standing ovation but the ovation of the crowd was still very loud and positive and went on for probably a minute maybe.
Now, the second time I saw it, most of the audience stood for it (I didn't....I actually love the song and listen to it a lot now but I just didn't think it was worth enough to stand) but what also got a huge standing ovation and maybe even a tad bigger than "A Musical" was the Something Rotten/Make an Omelette sequence.
At Lena Hall's last Hedwig, she was allowed to finish singing the love theme from the Hurt Locker (Hedwig usually cuts Yitzhak off), got a standing ovation, and Hedwig went nuts, storming around the stage, screaming at the audience to shut the **** up. One of the most glorious things I've ever seen. Lena also got a standing ovation after Long Grift.
The only time I have ever seen a standing ovation during a show was the original production of Dreamgirls at one of the last previews. It was right after Jennifer Holiday sang THAT song. People were losing their minds during that song. As great as that performance was, the standing o destroyed the scene for me.

I can't agree too strongly with the above. I couldn't even hear most of the song (and let's face it: Holliday sings LOUDLY) because the audience was clapping and screaming and standing and sitting and standing again. For me, it ruined whatever dramatic reality the scene had.
On the other hand, I saw a house full of geriatrics give Ethel Merman and Russell Nype a standing ovation (and 7 encores!) for "You're Just in Love" in CALL ME MADAM. But there's really no dramatic reality in that musical to ruin.
The standing Os at final performances are a different matter. Everyone knows someone is leaving or the show is closing; if they want to mark the occasion by standing, why not?
I was at Kristin Chenoweth's last Wicked performance and there were about 8 standing ovations throughout the show. Her entrance, Idina's entrance, after "Wizard and I", after "Popular", After "Defying Gravity," After "For Good" and the finale. So I guess that makes 7. I got a workout in.
Brad Oscar and the company of Something Rotten! got a standing ovation for "A Musical" both times I saw it. I felt awkward because I was the only person in my area not standing up, but that's a principle of mine - I don't stand up unless I feel it is truly merited. ESPECIALLY in the middle of a show. I mean, that number is good. But I've seen better performances in the middle of others shows that haven't gotten standing O's. So I personally didn't feel inclined to stand up. I gave the show a standing ovation at its curtain call though.
