Oh, maybe. I didn’t think they’d cut that one, for some reason.

They didn't need an out of town try-out to make some of the cuts they've been making.  They had many high end workshops to achieve most everything but the tech - or at least a stronger shape.  It's wild some of this made it to the stage 1st preview.  Most creatives have done this work in advance of a Broadway run, out of town preview or not.

I saw this tonight, I enjoyed this more than most of you.  It does have its flaws, but I found it entertaining.  I have never seen the movie.  I would vote for this for Best Musical over the other contenders.

#3 tonight for me and yes, Shosana’s new song replaced Be Kind, Rewind. Stunned once again at how many changes have been made in only a week (most for the better though I miss the post bow scene). Truly enough changes that I think CoffeeBreak should pretend to see the show again.

I saw tonight’s preview and I mostly found it laughably bad. The cast is trying their best! They are belting! But the score is derivative and misguided, with terrible lyrics. The book is an absolute drag. The ending is absurdly anticlimactic. And the tech? Eh. The flying is mostly very silly. I did like the lighting. A very expensive mess.

Seen it twice and will be at opening.

I liked it. It was much more upbeat and driving than Be Kind, Rewind if that makes sense. Thematically it was more about a Lucy herself and finding a sense of purpose in her life, but the overarching message of the song still fit into the video store setting and references.

This song, like many others, should just be cut not replaced.

There was a good play with music somewhere in there. The fact that conventional musical theater structures keep getting used in a formulaic manner is what make these shows seem stale and trite.

Shows need their own voices to feel exciting. Instead they all seem to follow old fashioned formulas dressed as "contemporary" with some modern sounds. Fail.

You nailed it. “Be Kind, Rewind” wasn’t even necessarily bad… just totally unnecessary. Considering none of the writers on this have written a musical before, it’s not surprising the show feels constrained by rote adherence to conventional musical theatre structure.

Expensive production - multiple sets, including an elevator stage left. Flying by Foy - not impressive as I've seen the flying since Peter Pan. However, anyone not familiar will be pleased. Shoshana- wonderful. The story takes too long to get the subject. The beginning is dreary.

Now that it's on TDF for critics performances, a lot of us are headin' to the Palace. This thread has inspired us. The mixed reports here suggest a show that's worth seeing regardless of subjective nitpicks. Sometimes the most intriguing.

Saw this yesterday and thought it was one of the worst Broadway musicals I’ve seen. This was in my same ranking as Tammy Faye. The set was great, Shoshana is a star, and that’s it. All those ballads, the tepid story development, the Party City Draculas, the gay superhero number, and that lead kid with the annoying Urkel voice. Wow.

I finally listened to the demo sessions on Spotify and found the 6 songs more successful than I expected. The power ballads-heavy selections do focus on emotional content, and the earnestness has a whiff of Rent (One Song, Glory-ish), a bit of Ghost, and - and not a criticism - a bit of Carrie. In fact, the Pitchford-Gore-ness of the 6 songs struck me as very Broadway friendly (I can already hear someone decry this last observation, but my ear has been attuned to the way mainstream musical theater incorporates the range of rock motifs for a half a century, so I'm at least a reliable witness, if no expert.)  I'm looking for ward to the show next week. I'm guessing that Bean does "Wild" justice, as the powerhouse Levy pulled on the recordings?

For context, I have never seen the film, so I went into this blind minus knowing it was "about"vampires.

Also, I won the lottery for the Wednesday 4/15 evening show, and got left center orchestra Row B (third row) - full view, but some set pieces did cause me to look very "up" but nothing id argue was uncomfortable. In fact, I really enjoyed being so close!

Some bullet point thoughts:

  • Shoshana is a star, and her Act 2 duet with Paul is my fave number in the show. That said, I do not think she is a lock for a Featured Actress nom.
  • Otherwise, I found the score mostly bland, and very ballad heavy. Not to say the songs were bad particularly, they just all felt too similar. I will still buy the cast album though, as a collector.
  • Speaking of Paul, he is so vocally talented, but I often feel bad that he is so often in bad shows (Margaritaville, Dr. Zhivago) or underwritten roles (this one)
  • Hot take: the flying in HPCC is better, even 7 years on, than the flying in Lost Boys. I was close and could see the wires - I could not say the same from my multiple HPCC viewings over the years.
  • I enjoyed the queer awakening that was Sam's superhero number in Act 2, and it seemed the audience did too.
  • Had no one posted about the now cut post-curtain scene, I never would've known it existed haha
  • The set and lighting are the stars of this production, for me. The levels, the set coming in and out, from above AND below the stage is just so impressive.
  • I think im a bit confused at some recent comments saying Shoshana's Be Kind, Rewind song had been cut (for a new number) cuz it was definitely in the show the night I attended 2 days ago
  • Ali Louis is underutilized. I wanted more scary/horror vibes and I just didn't get that, and I dont blame him at all for it.
  • The big finale scenes all felt so anti-climactic. Ali falling in slow motion into the pit after being what im calling "hug-stabbed" and the fireball that accompanied Paul's death being nowhere even close to him, as to create any kind of illusion. (I get the safety of it all, but like then just dont do it...)
  • I think this gets a Best Musical nom, just by default due to the light season, but it is not a front runner, and I actually dont see it winning any Tonys (think Mean Girls - many noms, no wins)
  • I was never once really compelled to cheer, meaning I never really got emotionally invested in any number or moment, minus "Wild" and to a lesser extent the Superhero song for the LGBTQ+ of it all; I clapped after every number like I'm supposed to, and that was basically all I felt. When im hootin' and hollerin' up a storm at Titanique or Cats, to me that shows that this show didn't really do much for me.

I went last night, the post-bow scene is back. Also Patrick Wilson was at the sound booth and omfg he is so handsome.

I wonder if the show will be eligible for Best Original Score, given a handful of major songs (“Secret Comes Out”, “Time To Kill”, “My Heart With You”, and the finale “If We Make It Through the Night”) are pre-existing Rescues songs that have been retooled for the show, but mostly have been scrubbed from their original releases on streaming for some reason.

A score needs to be at least 50% new for the stage to qualify for Best Original Score,

So, yes, it will be eligible.

SPOILER, GUESS ONLY: This jump scare everyone mentions strikes me as having origins as far back as the original Carrie (which I saw twice). Anyone else? The Virginia Theatre (dubbed thus then) was painted black, and house to show had no fade for the overture, just an earsplitting sound then crash to full black. And then the infectious Starobin orchestration of "And Eve Was Weak"/"The Destruction."  I felt deja vu reading these accounts.

I caught a late preview performance of The Lost Boys this afternoon, and found the entire affair to be a ghastly mess from top to bottom.

There are glaring issues across the board, starting with the book and score, both of which are shockingly awful. The music leans heavily into a generic, Christian rock sound, while the lyrics are often outright laughable. Much of the dialogue is trite and corny beyond belief. Tonally, the show is all over the place. The first act is dark and moody, and the second act leans into over the top camp.

The cast does what they can, but there is only so much they can do with material this thin. Shoshana Bean and Paul Nolan get the worst of the brunt. The Frog Brothers come across as extremely grating rather than amusing, and Sam’s superhero number feels like something that should have been cut after the first workshop.

There is certainly no shortage of spectacle. However, despite the scale of the set and design, I found it surprisingly lacking in visual appeal. The flying sequences are cool, but we have seen the same thing done (and done better) with Peter Pan and Spider-Man. The final “fight sequence” is rather anticlimactic.

I went in genuinely excited for this as I’m always up for a big, spectacle-driven musical, but this was a colossal disappointment. Easily one of the worst new Broadway musicals I’ve seen in recent memory.

Kinda surprised so many skated past this. Why would they scrub the songs if they were already out? The Rescues did an interview with Paul Wortek, and they talk a LOT about "If We Make It Through The Night" without mentioning that it was a previously written song. In fact, they go on to mention they had cut the original finale and that Through The Night was written as the replacement. The song came out in 2020 from what I could find.

Cause clearly greater than 50% of the score is new, so it'll be eligible.

Regardless of eligibility, I think it's a weird look either way to pretend every song is newly written for the show when that's not the case.
