I am starting to rethink my speculation that Nicole Scherzinger has a slight edge. First off, I don’t take Gold Derby all that seriously on the Tony Awards, but Scherzinger’s lead is based on her running up the score with the site’s ‘Top 24’ users. I don’t know who these people are. Their ‘experts’ - including critics - favor McDonald by a 7-4 margin. I’m not counting any of this.
I’m not going to make too big of a deal about the Drama Desk award for McDonald - shared with Jasmine Amy Rogers - but it’s in the mix.
Mainly, I am wondering if I overstated the significance of the apparent advantage Scherzinger might have based on my assumption that Sunset Blvd. would win Best Revival and that would help Scherzinger in a close race.
What if my assumption was wrong in the first place? What if McDonald has been the frontrunner all along? What if many voters are happy to vote for Sunset but honor Audra at the same time for a history-making turn in one of the most famous roles in musical theater history?
Audra’s campaign has been old-fashioned - the Ben Brantley tribute in the New York Times, the Time magazine story that discusses performing before former Vice President Kamala Harris and what the role means to her as a Black woman - but might be very effective with the industry voters she needs.
Her leading competitors, Scherzinger and Rogers, are making their Broadway debuts. Scherzinger is a fantastic vocalist and is doing exactly what her director wants. But I can imagine voters wanting to see what else she can do. I still would be pretty surprised if Rogers wins for a show that is regarded as mediocre.
I’ve changed my mind. I think Audra McDonald has the edge.
And once again, for clarification: I know nothing. I am speculating for fun.
45% of the final predictions were incorrect last year on Gold Derby including best musical, director etc. the “experts” on there had more incorrect than the consensus. It’s unreliable.

Probably the only thing I agree with you on. The goldderby odds are made up out of thin air and I never understood why people even look at them.
Gold Derby is good for the Oscars and other awards that have valid precursors. The Tonys don't have that, so the odds just seem like a distillation of "how do we FEEL this will go?" more than "how will this go?"

From reading various articles and listening to podcasts re: Tony predictions, there are a couple predicted wins based on the GD odds that are definitely going to ruffle certain critics’ feathers and probably people on here too, but those wins would be totally deserved in my eyes and I hope they happen anyway.

With Jasmine Amy Rogers receiving a Sardi's portrait today, does anyone else remember the last season with this many Sardi portrait ceremonies? (And a lot for debut performances too) Not knocking Cole or Jasmine or George or anyone else for that matter. I just feel like it's every day or two someone is receiving a Sardi's portrait!

Here are Variety's predictions, which they said they surveyed Tony voters for. Unlike the Holy Grail NY Times voters poll, they didn't say how many voters they spoke to. But at least it's based on speaking to Tony voters so I'm posting it here. Tomorrow, of course, is the almost 100% accurate NY Times voters poll so take Variety's with a grain of salt. I'll believe the "Purpose" and Jonathan Groff predictions if the NY Times poll says so.

I wish the Variety article would specify how many voters they spoke to. It reads as though it's a fairly small pool, as some of the preferences stated in the article read like individualistic tastes coming through rather than the consensus we keep hearing.
For instance, they only make a passing mention of Buena Vista Social Club being in contention for choreography, despite saying its most likely to take down MHE for Best Musical. They proclaim the choreography race is between Boop and...Gypsy?? No shade to Camille Brown who I ADORE and think should already have a Tony by now. But all anyone is talking about in this category is BVSC vs. Boop. I haven't heard of anyone voting for Gypsy. So methinks they got a survey response from 20-25 people, in which case it only takes a small handful of fans for one production to make it appear as if said production is in second place and poised for an upset.
Went back to Variety's final predictions for 2024, and they of course got plenty wrong:
Lead Actor - Play: Leslie Odom Jr. instead of Jeremy Strong
Featured Actress - Musical: Lindsey Mendez instead of Kecia Lewis
Featured Actress - Play: Sarah Pidgeon instead of Kara Young
Book: The Outsiders instead of Suffs
Score: Stereophonic instead of Suffs
Director - Musical: Maria Friedman instead of Danya Taymor

That is a LOT wrong.
