I knew Lin would be in the movie in this matter. And actually I’m cool with it.
Yeah... I’m sure audiences around the country will be upset to see Lin-Manuel Miranda as opposed to a no-name actor in the role. He was such an (unsurprisingly on this board) underrated electrifying presence in Rob Marshall’s MARY POPPINS. He was a star as Usnavi, it’ll be great to see him play a smaller but key role in this film.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

So why are you even bringing up Lin’s acting regarding a cameo role that anyone with a personality can do? Your assessment would be applicable if he were playing Kevin or Benny."
Why not? He is wooden and always, always ,self aware. It takes half a second on film to have a bad distraction. Yuck. And by the way.... the Piraguero is a staple in many of the communities represented in In The Heights. This is not a throwaway role."

Well as for that, let's all remember he is from the Heights. He obviously knows & loves the place and its people so even though acting may not be his strongest suit, I'm confident he can play the Piragua Guy. I for one am excited to see him in the movie.
The Piragua Guy may be an important symbol, but its not a significant role in the musical, I can't imagine it is in the film.
Why shouldnt he put himself in it? Isn't a big part of why he started writing was to create roles he could play??
Is he the best actor around? Or singer? Rapper? Nope, but I dont think thats news to him.
Look at him, living his dream. More power to him.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
You know, he has a right to put himself in the film considering he created In the Heights? The level of entitlement and snobbery is off the charts. If it upsets you that much just don't see the goddamned film and stay at home screaming HUSSY POWER! HUSSY POWER! to make yourself feel better.
Indeed. Actually struggling with seeing what the big problem is here to be honest. I mean the guy has kind of been everywhere and I guess it's easy to get overexposed. But most of the fans genuinely love him and still enjoy seeing him wherever he's bound to show up. Most of the world seems pleased with the casting and excited to see the old Usnavi running around next to the talented, young actors.
Not to mention before he was the big Hamilton figurehead, he was just the In the Heights guy who played Usnavi. And as I recall, he was fantastic and won a great deal of praise for his portrayal. People loved him in that role long before he was ever popular. So I don't see the issue with the most iconic of the Original Broadway Cast making a return as a small comic relief role. At worst, even if he suck, it will only be for a few minutes of the film and the moments where old meets new will still definitely be special.
Plus, the few original cast members in the film will be the only reminders of what the original Broadway production was like. Director Jon M. Chu brought on his staple choreographer Christopher Scott so the film will have all new choreography as well as costume design. Long gone are the days when film adaptations of Broadway musicals recreated the original costume designs, like WEST SIDE STORY, THE KING AND I, FUNNY GIRL, etc.

Oh my dear. What makes you think I am upset in any way? But I like that you envision me at home yelling HUSSY POWER. That puts a smile on my face. Personally I could give two flying F’s about the whole thing. I find him the be irritating and obnoxious. And by the way.. the show itself is mediocre and generic at best. I might find myself repeating this in a few threads from time to time. Simply because I can. It’s a opinion you know. I am aloud to have one. HUSSY POWER!

You give two flying F's about the whole thing yet you've posted about it 5 times in one day? Yeah whatever. And if you think the show itself is mediocre and generic at best then obviously don't waste your time seeing the movie. I got to see In the Heights on a field trip at a school I was teaching at and the kids loved it. Many of them live in Washington Heights.
If you feel so strongly you can go stalk and harass LMM on twitter. I'm sure he cares about your opinion a lot.

I post about it because I am amused and like getting a rise out of people like you. I just told you... I don’t feel strongly about t at all. I like how much you seem to care what I think. Seriously .. I would much rather read your blog and about your theater adventures with your mom. Yet this is fun. I’m here.. what else you got. And he IS obnoxious.

Thank you, DAME.
"
It is definitely not a throwaway role. When seeing the show it is one of the first characters that one from the community identifies with. To question the gimmick of casting LMM in this role is justifiable.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they have Lin/Piragua Guy break the fourth wall and address/talk to the audience at the start of the film and throughout the film. Commenting on things happening in the film.
I mean... I guess my only concern is that my two favorite vocal tracks in the show are now being played by LMM and Daphne Ruben Vega. But I'm sure they'll sound just fine in the studio.
they filmed 96,000 yesterday and today. but they had to stop filming due to the rain. my friend was an extra in the scene and he said that the choreography is hip hop and crunk. he also told me that the number will mostly take place at a public swimming pool.

Director Jon M. Chu’s cohort choreographer Christopher Scott is doing the choreography so expect his usual SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE nonsense.

christopher isn’t the only choreographer. there 3-4 other assistant choreographers

Yeah, that really bums me out. LMM is a super genius in so many things, but singing just is not one of them. I recall people not loving his voice in Tick..Tick..Boom! as well. But, this is his movie, so it is what it is.
