I'm going Saturday mat with 5 of my friends who know nothing about the show, won't they be surprised?
This is a ridiculous point to bring up, but I will, nonetheless, since Anakela brought up the New Zealand Shiraz vintage joke. I wonder if having such a time specific joke in the show would be problematic down the line, assuming Heights enjoys longevity for many years (and say what you will about the show, that's not an outrageous suggestion, given its importance for the Latino community. Just the fact that it's the first large scale Broadway production conceived by and about the latino community should ensure its place in musical theatre history, which makes future revivals plausible). Rent was written as a present day show, but because of all the culturally specific references, it's become more of a period piece. It may not be the 90s anymore, but it continues to be for the characters, and that works (in a way). But the Shiraz jokes relies on the show being set in the present, so any other culturally specific references within (at the top of my head, the Manny Rodriguez line, or even things like the wardrobe) wouldn't continue to work if it's, say, 2025. At least not if you keep the Shiraz joke, which firmly sets the action in the present.
As I said, it's a ridiculous point, cause all you'd have to do is get rid of the Shiraz joke and come up with something else, or update the references if/when they become outdated. It worked with Avenue Q (though in that case, it's only one line which can easily be changed up). But, whatever, it just occurred to me that it's not a piece that could be revived with its text intact.
eh, i dont think it would be a problem, though that did come to mind once when i was thinking "wow, in some years from now people won't even remember that there ever was a 9 train"
I'm just wondering if this means that Heights is set in the 'future' right now, as if it's a 2009 bottle of wine, within action taking place over the 4th of July weekend, that sets it in at least July 2009, right?
Honestly though, depending on how long the show runs I could see the Shiraz date joke running into a problem with the lyrics to Everything I Know, which for me is where a certain time period (Usnavi was a baby in '87, Daniela's in the 80s, etc.) is cemented.
I love the 9 train line! I think the only time I remember anymore that there was a 9 train is when I'm at Heights. I love when there are other NYers sitting near me, when I'm not the only one laughing at that line.
steven22- Doreen's Daniela is so much fun. I always find it interesting when there's only one, either a Daniela *or* a Carla u/s, because Andrea and Janet have such great chemistry together that it's interesting to watch whoever is on interact with the u/s. So having both Daniela *and* Carla u/s last night was fun to watch- Doreen and Krysta are good together, they really compliment each other (ie Doreen's delivery of "Do I look like Jesus to you?" followed by Krysta's looking her over- comedy.) I'd seen Doreen!Daniela before, and my favorite parts are still the way she hits that second "Hey!" at the start of Carnaval, and her reaction after her "Usnavi swore me to secrecy" delivery- priceless.
Is anyone supposed to be out on Saturday (besides Janet)?
If anyone cares, on for the matinee are: Doreen (Daniela), Krysta (Carla), and Michael (Grafitti Pete).
fyi for the Stephanie Klemons fans-
Stephanie Klemons is on for Carla in IN THE HEIGHTS tonight, Jan. 27th and tomorrow Jan. 28th both 2pm and 8pm.

Okay I have a question, and I didn't think it deserved its own thread. So here goes:
Basically I want to see this show on February 13th or 14th. I tried getting some of the $40 tickets, but it looks like they're sold out of them. Do more tickets become available, or do I have to fork over the $75? I'm pretty poor, haha. Also: playbill.com has mention of some $50 tickets, but I couldn't find any of those anywhere.
Sorry if this isn't the kind of information you'd know, but I figured since you guys love the show so much, maybe you'd have gotten tickets a few times before. Thank you so much!
I think the discounts are blocked for that weekend so you can't get the 50 dollar seats.
Does anyone know which celebrity was at In The Heights last night? I heard the lady behind me saying "she's here because she will be in the movie" and her daughters got up and came back with an autograph. I couldn't tell whose it was though.
I first thought Jennifer Lopez, but I think there would have been more buzz in the theatre if it had been her. Or was it?

Tyra Banks was there Tuesday night...she was in the second row past the split in the orchestra...
Loved the show by the way. So much energy and vitality.
So the u/s board at Heights tonight, for Javi's first night, is almost epic:
Elise Santora on for Abuela
Doreen!Daniela
Janet!Vanessa
Krysta!Carla
(Besides what was posted I am sure this means Stephanie was probably swung on, but I think that would still leave them short one female ensemble track?)
Anyway, I wasn't there, just saw the board walking by the theatre on my way home, so I would especially love to hear reports on how Javi's first night went!
olga told me last night she was going to Brazil. I assume she will be out for awhile.

SERIOUSLY!?
I want to watch Janet as Vanessa SO badly. Not to mention how much I love Javi! I'd LOVE to hear reports of tonight's show.
Anakela, they also have Noemi. So Noemi/Stephanie were in Doreen/Krysta's track... I'm not sure who was on for who, but they definitely split it up between them, unless one was out.
Janet's on as Vanessa for 3 weeks.
Seriously? That is awesome. That means I can will see her as Vanessa and Krysta as Carla!

When is Olga going to Brazil?

Blanca left months ago..
"When is Olga going to Brazil?"
Olga left yesterday (Monday the 16th)
Anakela, they also have Noemi. So Noemi/Stephanie were in Doreen/Krysta's track... I'm not sure who was on for who, but they definitely split it up between them, unless one was out.
Noemi!!! Yes, thank you- I was completely trying to map it out in my head, and I kept coming up one female swing short! So assuming neither was out they still had full female ensemble...
No reports on Javi's first official night yet?
