i went twice locally last month. Once to a professional production of Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutti, and then to a student production of Bernstein's Candide. Last November during my visit to NYC I attended a performance of Arabella at the Metropolitan Opera using my Audience Rewards points. Next weekend I'm flying down to Los Angeles to see LA Opera's production of Akhnaten.

In June, I am taking the train up north for the LA Opera's production of "The Magic Flute". Then in April 2027, returning for "Turandot". This will be my third time to enjoy "Turandot," first in Paris and last in Dallas. Inbetween, who knows? Opera has always been an important part of my life.

Excellent, glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to see how many people actually went.

That isn’t the “gotcha!” question you apparently think it is. People can defend, value, and respect art forms they are not patrons of.

Kad wrote that his off-putting behavior cost him a SAG Actor Award this year. Maybe.
He did win The Actor last year for Complete Unknown.
They probably thought he was sufficiently honored.
As for TC’s comments, not great or helpful.

For people who like data about these sorts of things, lots of it is available online. A few decent starting points:
1. Warning Signs: The Shifting Landscape of Cultural Audiences
Article drawing on NEA's 2023 comprehensive arts attendance research.
2. Understanding Opera’s New Audiences: Research Report
Opera America's national study that draws on a survey of over 11,000 operagoers from 2020 to 2024 across 36 opera companies of all sizes, formats, and geographies in the United States.
3. Dance Data Project research
Lots of reports here, but not single item jumped out at me. Ballet is covered somewhat in #1's NEA source report.
______________
In recent years, opera and dance both seem to be making some inroads with very young audience members through their use of digital and alternative programming. Traditional older audiences are unsurprisingly, often declining, or literally dying off.

Nice try Kad, not a "gotcha" question. I assume people posting on BWW are interested in the arts. I was curious how many would say they have gone to the opera and or ballet. In other words, how popular are those two art forms within a community that supports the arts. Yes, I understand you do not have to be a patron to respect a particular art form. Nobody is questioning the talent and value of the opera and ballet. I posted that I have gone to the opera once and while admiring the talent, it was just not for me. I have been to a several ballet performances in this country and even a couple in Europe. (exp. Royal Ballet in London)

I have been to several operas at Lyric Opera in Chicago and they were enjoyable. About 10 years ago, I went to see a ballet version of Othello by Joffrey Ballet. I was floored. It was so exciting and sexy and beautiful. It probably helped that I knew the story. But it was so incredible how they told this Shakespearean story completely through dance. Besides that, I see a production of Nutcracker every year either in New York or Chicago. I am very interested in seeing an opera at the Met but I think I am concerned about the dress code. I can't seem to get a clear explanation about if I can/should wear "regular" clothes like I do for Broadway shows.

The Met has no dress code.
You won't be turned away, Phantom4Ever. Enjoy!
