I saw Bernadette Peters live not too long ago and her voice is still in lovely shape regardless of what people on here say about her. She'd make a lovely Arden, but I must say that Victoria Clark would be spectacular, especially if paired with Donna Murphy's Rubenstein.
I've deciphered almost all of the lyrics for Forever Beautiful - anybody know what the [?] lyric is?
"These portraits
They trap me in amber
They will not age
They will live
Forever
My Dalí dear
That mad surrealist
He made me beautiful
Forever beautiful
My eyes like gems
Notice, please, each tiny lash
Would you believe
He painted with his own mustache?
Raoul Dufy
A brilliant colorist
He made me beautiful
Forever beautiful
A few deft strokes
Poppy red, then iris blue
In my small way
I do know something of this, too
Made women glorious
Made women glamorous
Used all my art to hault the march of time
I slowed it down a bit
There is no stopping it
But in a painting
It is always your prime - Right?
Tamara de Lempicka
She was bisexual
You see her love for me?
Well, it's subtextual
My lifelong fight
Is to keep my figure trim
But now I eat
'Cos [?] keeps me slim
Good, go then, you money men
I read your beady eyes
Vain old lady, all alone
In bed until she dies
I admit, I am a little bit afraid to meet death
But with my brilliant eye for art
When I depart, I'll cheat death
With my Picasso
His early cubist years
I posed no clothes with him
Thank God, who knows with him?
He says your ears are like elephant in size
I say, from you
Well, who can tell from ears or eyes?
When I was girl of eight
My father sneered away
A plainer face he'd never seen before
I said, to hell with fate
I'll mold my destiny
Packed my satchel,
And walked right out the door
From this contented life
Without the scent, I was
Became a name the world could not ignore
I reinvent my life
As every artist does
I had nothing
I knew nothing
I only know there must be something more
So much more
Look at them all
Their light will never dim
If death should come for me,
They bar the door on him
Though flesh may fade
Canvas lives immortally
And there I'll hang
From now through all eternity
Who gives a damn?
No children visit me
These are my progeny
Each an exquisite me
Who says I'm old?
I look at my life, so far
And I am beautiful
And I feel beautiful
Forever beautiful
When you feel beautiful
You are"
Haha I'm pretty sure it's Chocolate right?
(Edit: haha very stupid thought in hindsight)
It could be, but that doesn't really make sense, right? Chocolate doesn't keep you slim. I'm thinking she's referencing a painting maybe in which she was painted slimmer than she actually was?

I'm fairly sure that the line in question is, "'Cause Giacometti keeps me slim." Giacometti was a major sculptor and painter pretty much of the caliber of the other artists mentioned in the song.
May I just add that I believe the "War Paint" score to be for the most part glorious and profoundly underrated.
I think the line is "My father sneered at me" because that makes more sense and rhymes with "destiny"

Well that makes more sense. I thought it was meant to be a joke. (I mean it still is but still haha).
I would just like to once again say that it really is a shame that such a beautiful jazz score was completely overlooked at the Tonys. The lyrics, while there are some odd choices, are beautiful and specific and the music is interesting and unpredictable (in a good way). Frankel and Korie really are extremely underrated. Grey Gardens, Far From Heaven, and War Paint are all beautiful in their own ways and yet they are all under-appreciated. God, there are so many books and films that I would love to see them adapt.

I also love "Better Yourself" and "Oh, That's Rich"
"If I'd Been A Man and Now You Know are my 2 new favorites ...been listening every day and discover something new with each listen!

For my own curiosity, is there anyone here who was involved with War Paint when Donna Murphy was in it? I'm just really curious to hear how she was in the part and maybe how the show evolved.

Anyone have the lyric following "a little wandering Jew" in "Back On Top?"
^ That looks correct. Those are some fantastic lyrics.
They are hilarious lyrics. The show does seem to get better and better upon return listenings.
Anyone else agree that FACE TO FACE was the best shot performance of the night? I love the camera spin at the end.

Question about the meaning of this lyric in Forever Beautiful:
Tamara de Lempicka, she was bisexual
You see her love for me? Well, it's subtextual
Is this a subtle jab at how some straight people automatically think a gay person wants them once they find out their preference?
I'm afraid to give my thoughts unless I embarrass myself again but I thought that line was just meant to 1. Reinforce the character's bold/brass/confident personality but also, 2. Make a joke (you can't really see the love for someone in a portrait, hence her conceding it's 'subtextual' - which is funny. I find it to be a funny line.

Also, I could not discern at least half of the lyrics sung by Patti LuPone. That's as good a reason as any to give the songsanother chance when the CD is released."
These were my exact sentiments. I'd give it another listen too though.
Although the show is hugely flawed, this is probably the one recording this season I'll listen to more than once.
I love this score and loved this show. Had it opened either last year or this year it would've had a better run.

It closed early, three weeks before my flight from Europe. I was gutted. But we've got Patti this season so that makes up for it in part.
I saw it on a rainy Wednesday matinee when the two stars were in peak form. I remember feeling impressed with both but "meh" at the intermission, though the show coalesced beautifully in the lovely last thirty minutes (final two arias, stellar, and obligatory if ahistorical scene). The score, however, is a keeper. And I enjoy it on Spotify. "Pink" is still glorious, a perfect little one-act play top to bottom.
I wonder if ‘Flying Over Sunset’ is this year’s War Paint. I know it wasn’t ‘perfect’ but everything about it is why I think New York Theatre continues to be the best in the world. The music, the subject matter, the lyrics, the creative team, the actors. You just don’t get this anywhere else in terms of musicals. I am still in awe that year after year investments in these shows are made.

I loved War Paint the two times I saw it (once in Chicago, once on broadway) the score was rich and textured and Patti and Christine were SUBLIME
I could see why people found the show boring, but I personally loved it. LuPone is my top Broadway performer, and it's always a thrill to see her live. She was funny and touching, and her voice was just sublime. Her sustained belts in Back on Top were marvelous, and Forever Young will always be a highlight of my theatergoing. Her voice is just top notch. Ebersole was fantastic too of course, and the two played off of each other so well. I wish I could've seen it more than once, but I loved it the one time I got to see it, so that's good enough for me.
