I think that Raul and Groff from "Spring Awakening" (who did have a big following) probably split the vote, making it possible for Pierce to "sneak" in.

Raul's vibrato is so annoying, my wife said, "What the hell is wrong with him?" THAT is why he lost.
Wow, I mean just wow! This is the Avenue Q moment. A real WTF.
And I must say...it was nice to hear Pierce thank his partner. After Sater's speeches, I don't know if I could have taken another thank you speech to a 'wife'.

I have been going to the theater since I was six, and I have never experienced a performance like Esparza's. I have never been that emotionally moved and inspired by a performance in my life. I knew of Esparza from cast recordings but it was my first time to see him perform in Company- I am now a huge fan of his and looking forward to see what he does next. But he did deserve that Tony. While I have not seen DHP, Esparza's performance made me cry, something that no other performance has made me do.
That is the most stupid thing I think I ever heard. That Raul lost because of his vibrato. His voice and vibrato are amazing.
I'm so disappointed, because it was clear that this was his time. What he's doing with Bobby ranks as one of the best performances I've seen in my entire life -- I hope that he'll win someday, but he deserved it now, for this role.
You are talking about vibrato? DHP DON'T even have vibrato! His voice is worse than Raul's, his acting is worse than Raul's, his singing skill is not as good as Raul's, his character is shallower than Raul's, and he sucks in dancing!

When I heard Bernadette say "oy," I knew it.
Did she really say that? I didnt catch it.
The two second shot of his face when he lost really made me upset though. I didnt/couldnt even cry when he lost.... I just have that same deep ache feeling that I get after hearing Being Alive. Raul's performance alone tonight shows how amazing he is. Hopefully that at least will draw people to the show.
This is why I hate these awards!

Actually, I called every winner EXCEPT Best Book of a Musical which I believe should be taken from Steve Sater and given to Doug Wright or Rupert Holmes. This will bother me for the entire summer!!!!!!!! (and I don't like his vibratto either, but it's stupid to say that's why he lost)

dp sorry
Hey AlanAntonio, that's a little harsh to say that David Hyde Pierce is undeserving. Any one of those nominees is just as deserving of the award as the next one. They all work there butts off every night. No one is just up there half assing it. I say congrats to David and to everyone nominated, they are all such amazingly talented people!
Absolutely disgusting... wow. I guessed the winner in EVERY. SINGLE. category... BUT that one. My mother (a musical fan but hardly a devotee) saw Raul's performance on the Tony telecast, and her only words were: "Wow. If he doesn't win the Tony, something is wrong."
...i'm still speechless.
I'm glad DHP won... The award wasn't for most mellow dramatic performance of the season after all.

ljay889, my wife is an AEA actress. She found him annoying. People like her VOTE! What is the basis for stating that her comment is stupid?
DHP is talented, but probably my least favourite out of the whole Curtains cast. I liked him but I wasn't that impressed with him. I love Esparza's tony performance.
"The award wasn't for most mellow dramatic performance of the season after all."
Even if you had spelled melodramatic correctly that would still be one of the most moronic statements of the night.

Ahmelie, have you seen Company? I'm just curious what people who havent seen the show thought of his performance out of context
Oh come now, Priest.
That 'Mock me with praise' tonight was just a wee bit 'GIVE MY DAUGHTER THE SHOT!!!!'
I thought DHP's acceptance speech had the appropriate 'I just witnessed a bunch of guys get mugged... and then the muggers gave me their wallets!' tone. It was a tough category. I liked him in Curtains, and thought he deserved the nomination, but not the award.

Or of the season sticktopriest. NO ONE can say that Raul didn't deserve this Tony. I was thoroughly dissapointed with DHP's performance in Curtains. I sometimes forgot he was even on stage. He did not grab my attention as the LEADING ACTOR. That's not good.

Raul's vibrato was out of control tonight, but it's fine in the recording. I bet either he was really nervous (I have a fast vibrato and that makes it go out of whack) or just got really into it and didn't worry so much about controlling it.
dude my post disapeared...
I haven't been able to pick my jaw up off the ground. I was so numb I couldn't even roll my eyes when Spring Awakening won best musical. I couldn't even bare to care because for the past six years, I've been following Raul's career. From tick tick to the Rocky Horror to the Sondheim festival to Taboo I've been there and been amazed at his talent. After watching him grow through the years, I felt so proud to finally see his name above the title. He truly deserved this award for not just his gut-wrenching performance in Company, but for every show he's done previously. I don't know what this says about the Tony's... Does anyone think the vote might have been split between him and Groff, and thus it went to Peirce? Or are there really a bunch of nutters out there?
[and now I see someone else has posed this question... it is possible, isn't it?]

Chung...I'm one of them...I was mesmerized and moved. He put his heart and soul into that performance tonight...Pierce was Pierce with an accent.
Raul's performance was amazing and I stopped breathing when David's name was announced. Strange.
